Start with Metro 2033 Redux, continue with Metro: Last Light Redux, then play Metro Exodus. That order follows Artyom’s main story. Metro Redux is the collection of the first two games—not a separate chapter you need to play before them.
What order should you play the Metro games in?
- Metro 2033 or Metro 2033 Redux: Begin here. It introduces Artyom and the Moscow Metro setting.
- Metro: Last Light or Metro: Last Light Redux: Play this second; it continues the main series after Metro 2033.
- Metro Exodus: Play this third. It continues Artyom’s journey beyond the Moscow tunnels.
Deep Silver’s official story-so-far page presents the games in that sequence. For a first playthrough, choose the Redux versions of the first two games if they are available on your platform: they are updated editions, not additional entries in the story.

Is Metro Redux a separate game?
No. Metro Redux is a two-game collection containing Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. Buying or launching the collection does not add a new story chapter between those games. Deep Silver describes Metro Redux as the collection of the first two titles.
Metro 2033 Redux is an updated edition of the first game. PLAION says it was rebuilt using the Last Light engine and gameplay framework, and offers Spartan and Survival play styles. What do the Exodus expansions add?
The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story are expansions for Metro Exodus, not required main-series games. They are listed as Exodus add-ons in the Steam listing; the Metro Saga Bundle listing also lists both alongside the three main games.
You can treat them as optional content after choosing Exodus. The official listings cited here identify them as expansions but do not establish a spoiler-aware point within the base game for starting each one, so this guide does not prescribe a more precise in-game placement.

Do you need to read the Metro books first?
No. The novels are optional context, not a prerequisite for understanding the game order. Deep Silver identifies Dmitry Glukhovsky as the author of the Metro novels and creator of the wider universe that includes the games, but its game-order material does not require reading the books first. You can begin with Metro 2033 and follow Artyom’s story through the games.
Which edition or bundle should you choose?
If you want to start the series, look for the first two games as Metro Redux or as their individual Redux editions, then get Metro Exodus. If you want the complete main series and its Exodus expansions together, the official Metro Saga Bundle listing includes all three main games, The Two Colonels, and Sam’s Story.

The first two games establish Artyom’s story in the Moscow Metro before Exodus takes him beyond the tunnels. Deep Silver describes Metro Exodus as a story-driven first-person shooter combining combat, stealth, exploration, and survival horror. Playing the earlier entries first gives that continuation its narrative context.
