If the appeal of Baldur’s Gate 3 was making party and story choices while planning turn-based encounters, the sequel is the clearest place to start. The word “Definitive” matters when choosing which edition to look for. Larian says the edition revises Act 4, adjusts game balance and adds Story Mode, a lower-pressure option. Those changes make it the edition to seek out for a first playthrough rather than a reason to expect a remake. In December 2025, Larian also brought the game to Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, explicitly describing those releases as not a remake or remaster.
Who should choose Original Sin 2?

For a new player, look for Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition. Larian identifies it as the revised edition, with a reworked Act 4, balance changes and Story Mode. The platform matters more than the label if you are moving from an older console. Larian announced releases on Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on December 15, 2025. Its upgrade FAQ says prior owners generally receive the relevant current-generation update at no additional charge, but that is not a universal worldwide promise: the FAQ identifies a ¥100 charge for specified Switch-to-Switch 2 and PS4-to-PS5 upgrades in Japan. Check the applicable store and Larian’s current upgrade information for your region before purchasing or upgrading.
There is a specific caveat for a physical PS4 copy. PlayStation says you must insert the PS4 disc to download or play the PS5 digital version, and the disc entitlement cannot be used on a disc-free PS5. If you own a disc-free console, do not assume a PS4 disc will provide access to the PS5 version.

What should you play if you want another cooperative RPG?
Choose Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition if you want turn-based exploration and party discussion, and do not mind playing an earlier game. Larian’s description highlights cooperative play alongside turn-based combat and an open world. It is the most natural alternative when your favorite parts of Baldur’s Gate 3 were making decisions with companions and planning encounters with another player.
The first Original Sin is not simply the same experience as its sequel. Its official description is useful for setting expectations—party discussion, turn-based combat, exploration and interactions—but it does not establish that it shares Original Sin 2’s specific classless character-building system or edition revisions. Approach it as its own earlier Larian RPG, not as a required tutorial for the second game.

Larian lists the Enhanced Edition on PC, Mac and Linux through Steam or GOG, as well as the Mac App Store, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Its support page says the Enhanced Edition is not currently supported on Steam Deck; check the current support page before relying on portable compatibility. Availability and support are platform-specific, so confirm the edition and store listing for the device you intend to use.

What are the other Divinity games like?
The remaining entries are worth considering when you want Larian’s setting or style of world-building but are willing to change genres. None is as close a fit for Baldur’s Gate 3’s party-based tactical-RPG appeal as the two Original Sin games.
3. Divinity: Dragon Commander — best for strategy
Divinity: Dragon Commander combines real-time strategy, turn-based territorial conquest, dragon combat, political choices and multiplayer. Its mix makes it the most substantial genre detour on this list: it gives a player interested in decisions and Larian’s world-building something to explore, but it is not another turn-based party CRPG. Pick it because you want strategy and dragon combat, not because you expect a second Baldur’s Gate 3.

Larian dates it to 2009. The studio’s navigation also uses the label Divinity II: Developer’s Cut; that does not establish that every historical release or physical edition is identical. Check the full edition name on a current store or box listing, especially if you are trying to match a particular version.
5. Divine Divinity — best for exploring Larian’s early Rivellon
Divine Divinity is a 2002 hack-and-slash action RPG with a large world and many items, according to Larian. Its appeal after Baldur’s Gate 3 is historical and setting-focused: it lets you visit an earlier version of Rivellon through a different kind of game. It is not the pick for modern co-op, party choices or BG3-style tactical combat.
Its age is a practical part of the decision. The published description supports calling it an older action RPG; it does not establish compatibility or performance on a particular current computer. Check the store’s current system and compatibility information before purchase if you plan to play it on newer hardware.
6. Beyond Divinity — best if you want to continue the early series
Beyond Divinity, dated by Larian to 2004, follows Divine Divinity. Its premise binds the protagonist to a Death Knight. What order should you play the Larian games in?
You do not need to play the series chronologically. For the shortest path from Baldur’s Gate 3, start with Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition; if you want more of the turn-based co-op style afterward, try Original Sin – Enhanced Edition. Larian says the sequel has only subtle throwbacks to the first game, so skipping it does not block you from enjoying the second.
If you want to explore Larian’s earlier Rivellon games instead, the sensible order is Divine Divinity followed by Beyond Divinity, since Larian presents the latter as the former’s follow-up.
