For better gaming performance on a Windows laptop, plug it into its supported power adapter, choose Best performance power mode if available, and set the game’s GPU preference to High performance if your laptop has switchable graphics. Then test relevant Windows, laptop-vendor, and in-game settings one at a time. These changes can help the laptop use its available performance, but no setting guarantees a particular FPS increase; choices and labels depend on your Windows version, hardware, drivers, and laptop maker.
Start with power and a baseline
- Connect the supported power adapter. Gaming laptops may limit performance when running on battery. A performance-oriented mode can also increase power use, heat, and fan noise.
- Set Windows power mode. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best performance if it is available. Microsoft says the mode can be set separately for plugged-in and battery operation; not every device offers the same choices. Microsoft’s power-mode guide explains the options. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these Windows 11 paths should not be assumed to match Windows 10.
- Record how the game performs now. Note its frame rate and current graphics settings, or run the same built-in benchmark or repeatable scene before and after each change. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what actually helped.
Make sure the game uses the fast GPU
Many laptops have integrated graphics for efficiency and a more powerful discrete GPU for demanding work. Windows or the laptop’s graphics software may select between them automatically, but a per-game preference can help when the wrong GPU is being used.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game under the custom options. If it is not listed, use the option to add a desktop app and browse to the game’s executable.
- Choose Options, select High performance, save, and restart the game.
Windows may show the name of the GPU associated with the high-performance choice. The setting may be unavailable or have no effect on a laptop with only one GPU, and device-specific graphics switching can affect how the choice is applied. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 graphics settings guidance. AMD’s older switchable-graphics instructions describe Power Saving as integrated graphics and High Performance as discrete graphics, with higher power use for the latter; current controls can instead be managed through Windows, depending on software version. AMD’s switchable-graphics guide may therefore not match a newer laptop’s menus.
Enable windowed-game optimization only when it applies
Windows 11 has an Optimizations for windowed games setting for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Microsoft says it moves compatible games to a flip-model presentation path, which can reduce frame latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.

To try it, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics and enable Optimizations for windowed games, then restart the game. This is not a universal improvement for every game: its stated scope is specific to DirectX 10/11 titles in windowed or borderless mode, and display features still require compatible hardware and support.
Choose laptop-vendor features for your actual goal
Check the laptop maker’s utility and supported NVIDIA or AMD software rather than assuming every advertised feature is available. Laptop configurations, GPU generations, drivers, and utility versions differ.

If your laptop has NVIDIA graphics
- Performance while plugged in: NVIDIA Max-Q features include Dynamic Boost, which adjusts power allocation between the GPU and CPU, and Advanced Optimus, which supports graphics and display switching on supported systems. These are platform capabilities, not necessarily user-facing switches.
- Rendering efficiency: DLSS can improve rendering efficiency in supported games and on compatible hardware. Compare the result in the game you play; support and image quality vary.
- Quiet play: WhisperMode is designed around quieter, more efficient gameplay, not maximum FPS. It can use frame pacing and graphics choices to reduce noise. NVIDIA’s current WhisperMode overview describes its feature, while the July 31, 2017 vendor announcement contains historical claims that should not be treated as current independent measurements.
- Play away from an outlet: BatteryBoost targets unplugged gaming with an adjustable frame-rate target. It trades frame rate and potentially image quality for battery runtime; it is not a peak-performance setting. See NVIDIA’s BatteryBoost overview.
If your laptop has AMD graphics
- Power allocation: AMD SmartShift Max dynamically directs power between Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics on supported configurations.
- Battery use: SmartShift Eco is described by AMD as using integrated graphics on battery and shifting to Radeon graphics when plugged in on supported systems. Treat it as a runtime-oriented feature, not a maximum-FPS mode.
- Graphics selection: SmartAccess Graphics can select integrated or discrete graphics based on workload on supported configurations. AMD also lists Radeon Super Resolution and SmartShift RSR among its upscaling-related technologies; availability depends on hardware and software support.
These capabilities and their controls vary by exact laptop. Check AMD’s Smart Technologies overview and your laptop maker’s utility for supported features and current menu names.
Tune the game’s graphics settings
There is no universal setting order or numeric value that improves every game on every laptop. Use the game’s own graphics menu and compare the same scene or benchmark after changing one option at a time. These are useful controls to investigate:

- Render resolution and upscaling: Lowering render resolution reduces the work required to draw each frame, usually at an image-quality cost. If the game supports DLSS or another compatible upscaler, compare its available quality modes in that game rather than assuming one is best for every display or GPU.
- Ray tracing: If frame rate is below your target, test turning down or disabling ray tracing. Its performance and visual impact depend on the game and hardware.
- Shadows and other demanding effects: Reduce these selectively if the game remains too demanding after choosing a suitable resolution. The exact options and their costs vary by title.
- Frame-rate cap: A cap can help keep frame delivery within a chosen target and may reduce unnecessary GPU work, heat, or fan activity. It does not increase the GPU’s maximum rendering capability; choose a target that suits the game and display.
Keep a change only if it improves the experience you care about—such as smoother play, lower latency, quieter fans, or better image quality—without creating a worse tradeoff elsewhere.
Pick settings by priority
| Priority | Settings or features to consider | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Performance while plugged in | Windows Best performance; per-game High performance GPU; laptop maker’s performance profile | Can mean higher power use, heat, and fan noise. Device options vary. |
| Longer play away from an outlet | A battery-oriented feature such as NVIDIA BatteryBoost, if supported, and less demanding in-game settings | May limit or pace frame rate and reduce image quality in exchange for runtime. |
| Quieter play | NVIDIA WhisperMode, if supported, or a laptop-vendor quiet profile | May pace frame rates or reduce graphics settings to lower noise and power use. |
| Lower latency in a compatible windowed game | Windows 11 Optimizations for windowed games | Applies to compatible DirectX 10/11 windowed or borderless games; restart after changing. |
| More image quality within a performance budget | Supported upscaling, such as DLSS or AMD RSR | Game and hardware support vary; compare the image and performance in the specific game. |

- Confirm the game is set to the high-performance GPU where the laptop supports a choice.
- Check that the laptop is plugged in and that Windows or the manufacturer utility is not set to a battery-saving or quiet profile.
- Compare the same scene with one graphics change at a time; a setting that helps one game may not help another.
- If the laptop becomes hot or the fans are unusually loud, a performance mode may be constrained by the system’s thermal or power behavior. A quieter or lower-demand setting can be a better fit than pushing for maximum FPS.
- Do not start with manual voltage or clock tuning. AMD says default GPU and memory settings provide the best performance for most users and describes tuning as requiring advanced technical knowledge. See AMD’s GPU tuning guidance.
