For everyday browsing, video, reading, and apps, start with the iPad (A16). Choose the iPad mini (A17 Pro) if a compact 8.3-inch tablet is the priority; the iPad Air (M4) if you want an 11- or 13-inch model in a higher tier; or the iPad Pro (M5) if you specifically want its premium display and features. These are practical choices based on Apple’s listed lineup, not independent performance-test results. Apple’s US comparison page lists these families as of October 7, 2026; availability and prices may differ by region.
How to choose between the four iPad families
Start with the trade-off you care about most: portability, screen workspace, or display and capability features. Apple lists iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad Air (M4) in 11- and 13-inch sizes, and iPad Pro (M5) in 11- and 13-inch sizes. The model names and specifications below reflect Apple’s US comparison page, which can change over time.
| Family | Listed model and sizes | Best fit | Notable listed feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPad | iPad (A16); about 10.86 inches diagonally | General-purpose tablet use without a specific need for mini portability, Air size or Pro display features | A-series chip |
| iPad mini | iPad mini (A17 Pro); 8.3 inches diagonally | Readers who put compact size and portability ahead of a large work surface | Liquid Retina display |
| iPad Air | iPad Air (M4), 11-inch or 13-inch | People who want a larger tablet and an M-series family | Liquid Retina display |
| iPad Pro | iPad Pro (M5), 11-inch or 13-inch | People who specifically value the Pro display and listed Pro features | Ultra Retina XDR, tandem OLED, ProMotion, and Thunderbolt/USB 4 support |
Apple’s comparison notes that the listed 11-inch Air display is about 10.86 inches diagonally, the 13-inch Air about 12.9 inches, the 11-inch Pro 11.1 inches, and the 13-inch Pro 13 inches. Screen measurements are diagonal; the family names are not identical to measured display diagonals. See Apple’s Compare iPad models for the current US lineup and detailed specifications.
Which iPad is right for your use?
Choose iPad (A16) for everyday tablet use
The standard iPad is a sensible starting point for browsing, video, reading, communication, and everyday apps if you do not need the mini’s compact form, an Air’s larger-size options, or the Pro’s display features. This is a feature-based buying rule, not a claim that it is the best value in every region; compare current local prices and the configuration you actually need.

Choose iPad mini (A17 Pro) for compact portability
The mini’s 8.3-inch display makes it the compact choice in Apple’s listed lineup. It suits someone who wants a tablet that is easier to carry than the larger options and does not need as much room for split-view work or a broad typing surface. The portability-versus-workspace distinction is a practical inference from its smaller dimensions, not a measured comfort finding.
Choose iPad Air (M4) for a larger-screen step up
The Air comes in 11- and 13-inch configurations with Apple’s M4 chip. Consider it if you want more screen area than the mini or standard iPad offers and do not specifically need the Pro’s cited display features. A larger screen can provide more room for media and multitasking, but confirm the exact display, storage, and keyboard configuration before comparing costs.

Choose iPad Pro (M5) for its display and Pro-specific features
The Pro is the family to consider if its Ultra Retina XDR display with tandem OLED, ProMotion, or Thunderbolt/USB 4 support addresses a need you actually have. It is available in 11- and 13-inch sizes. If those features do not matter to you, compare the other families using current regional prices rather than assuming the Pro is necessary.
Screen size, storage, and connectivity affect the comparison
The mini is the smallest listed option; Air and Pro each offer 11- and 13-inch sizes, while the standard iPad’s display is about 10.86 inches diagonally. A larger panel offers more physical workspace, while the smaller mini is more compact. Which is preferable depends on how you carry and use a tablet.

Storage capacities and cellular options vary by model and configuration. Decide how much storage you need and whether cellular connectivity matters before comparing prices: a starting configuration in one family is not necessarily equivalent to one in another.
