A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Choose the format that matches the image and its delivery requirements. Use WebP or AVIF as modern web starting points for many raster images, JPEG for photographs when broad compatibility or an existing workflow matters, PNG when you need lossless pixels or transparency, and SVG for vector artwork that must scale without blur. Animated content may fit WebP, AVIF or APNG; GIF is mainly a legacy-compatibility choice. When support is uncertain, serve a fallback with <picture>.
Start with the image, not the file extension
There is no universally best image format. A camera photograph, a screenshot containing text, a transparent product cutout, and a logo have different priorities. Decide in this order:
- Image type: photograph, screenshot, line art, logo, diagram or animation.
- Fidelity requirement: whether every pixel must survive unchanged or small losses are acceptable.
- Transparency: whether the image needs an alpha channel.
- Scaling: whether it must remain sharp at many sizes.
- Audience and software support: which browsers, apps or devices must open it.
- Delivery constraints: page speed, progressive display, caching and file-size limits.
Export two or three candidates from the same source, compare them at the intended dimensions, and inspect text, edges, gradients and fine detail. Compression results depend on the source image, encoder, settings and quality target; a result from one file is not a universal percentage.
JPEG (JPG): dependable photographs
When JPEG is a good choice
JPEG uses lossy compression, discarding image data to reduce size. It remains practical for photographs with continuous tones, such as camera images, travel pictures and background photos. JPEG also has very broad historical support, so it can be the safest choice when an old application, embedded device or established publishing workflow is involved.

Where JPEG falls short
- It has no alpha channel, so it cannot provide true transparent pixels.
- Repeated editing and re-exporting can accumulate visible artifacts.
- Sharp text, icons and one-pixel lines may show ringing or block boundaries at aggressive quality settings.
Use the quality setting that meets your visual target at the delivered size, and keep an original source file in a lossless or raw format for future edits.
PNG: lossless pixels and transparency
Best uses
PNG is lossless: decoding reproduces the encoded image exactly. It supports transparency and is well suited to screenshots, charts, interface captures, diagrams, line art and transparent overlays where crisp edges and text matter more than the smallest file.
Trade-offs
PNG files can be much larger than lossy photographic formats when the image contains complex photographic detail. Do not convert every photo to PNG simply because it is lossless; compare the visual requirement and delivery cost first.
WebP: a modern raster default
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression and can include transparency and animation. That combination makes it a flexible web format: use lossy WebP for many photographs, lossless WebP for graphics that need exact edges, and WebP with alpha for transparent raster artwork.

Choose WebP after checking the browsers and applications that matter to your audience. If an older or specialized client may not decode it, provide a fallback rather than forcing a single format.
AVIF: strong compression with format-dependent results
AVIF also supports lossy and lossless encoding, transparency and animation. The MDN image-format guide gives an illustrative example in which lossy AVIF images are around 50% smaller than JPEG at visually similar compression levels. That is an example, not a promise: encoder implementation, source image and quality settings can change the result substantially.

AVIF is worth testing for bandwidth-sensitive photographic pages and image-heavy applications. Measure the actual files you will publish, and retain a fallback for clients that do not support your chosen delivery path.
SVG: use vectors when the artwork is geometric
SVG is a vector format rather than a grid of fixed pixels. Logos, icons, diagrams and other geometric artwork can stay sharp when rendered at different sizes and resolutions. SVG is not a drop-in replacement for a photograph: converting a photo to SVG does not create a compact, naturally scalable photo.

A raster export may be more appropriate when a receiving application cannot accept SVG.
Animation: WebP, AVIF, APNG or GIF?
Animated WebP and AVIF can combine modern compression with animation. APNG is useful when lossless frames and alpha transparency are important. GIF remains relevant when a legacy workflow specifically requires it, but its limited color model and inefficient animation make it a poor default for new, image-heavy work. Google’s guidance for diagrams and related imagery advises using video instead of animated GIF when the content is effectively a video; compare a short video with an animated image when duration, sound, controls or file size matter.
Check playback support in the exact browsers, messaging clients or design tools you target. An animated format that cannot play in the destination is worse than a larger, compatible fallback.
Quick selection table
| Need | Practical starting point | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Web photograph | WebP or AVIF; JPEG when broad compatibility or an existing workflow is the priority | Compare file size and visual fidelity at the actual export settings; keep a fallback when required. |
| Screenshot, chart or line art | PNG, or lossless WebP/AVIF | Text and hard edges expose lossy artifacts quickly. |
| Transparent raster image | PNG, WebP or AVIF | JPEG has no alpha transparency. |
| Scalable logo, icon or diagram | SVG when the source artwork is vector | Raster formats can blur when enlarged. |
| Animation | WebP, AVIF or APNG; GIF for legacy needs | Compare support and file size; consider video for video-like content. |
| Very broad legacy compatibility | JPEG for photos, PNG for transparency or crisp graphics | Newer formats may require a fallback. |
Lossy versus lossless: how to decide
Choose lossy when size is the dominant constraint
Lossy encoding can make a large reduction by removing details that are less noticeable at the displayed size. It is often appropriate for photographs and textured backgrounds. Inspect faces, foliage, gradients and fine patterns at 100% before publishing.

Choose lossless when exact pixels matter
Lossless encoding preserves the encoded image exactly. Screenshots with small type, UI controls, charts, technical diagrams and images that will be edited repeatedly are typical candidates. Lossless does not mean small; a complex image can still require substantial storage.
Do not confuse source preservation with delivery format
Keep an editable master separately, then export a delivery file for each context. A lossless master lets you create a JPEG, WebP, AVIF or PNG later without repeatedly recompressing the only copy.
Transparency and backgrounds
JPEG cannot represent transparent pixels. PNG, WebP and AVIF can carry an alpha channel, so they are suitable for logos, product cutouts and overlays that must appear over changing backgrounds. Confirm that the destination app preserves alpha; some tools flatten transparency against white during import or export.
If a supposedly transparent image displays a solid rectangle, inspect the file’s alpha channel and the CSS or application background. Do not “fix” it by switching to JPEG; choose a format and export settings that preserve the intended transparency.
Browser delivery with a fallback
Use the HTML <picture> element when you want modern formats but cannot assume universal support. Put preferred sources first and a dependable <img> fallback last. Keep meaningful alternative text and intrinsic dimensions.
<picture>
<source type="image/avif" srcset="hero.avif">
<source type="image/webp" srcset="hero.webp">
<img src="hero.jpg" width="1600" height="900"
alt="People collaborating around a table">
</picture>
For responsive layouts, provide width variants in srcset and use sizes to describe the rendered width. Test the fallback path, not just the preferred source, and verify that your CDN sends the correct MIME type.

Export and testing checklist
- Start from the highest-quality source available.
- Set the delivered pixel dimensions before judging compression.
- Export candidate formats with documented quality settings.
- Compare visual fidelity at normal display size and at 100% zoom.
- Check transparency against light and dark backgrounds.
- Open files in the real browsers, apps and CMS used by your audience.
- Confirm dimensions, color profile handling and MIME types.
- Measure transfer size after CDN processing, not only on your local disk.
- Keep a fallback where support or decoding is uncertain.
Common mistakes and fixes
“Everything should be AVIF”
AVIF can be excellent, but no format wins every compression comparison. Test the image, encoder and quality target you actually use, and provide a fallback when needed.
“PNG is always higher quality”
PNG preserves pixels but may be unnecessarily large for photographs. Quality is about matching the visual requirement, not selecting the largest file.
“SVG will make any image scalable”
SVG scales vector geometry. A photographic raster image remains a raster image even if embedded inside an SVG container.
“A transparent JPEG is possible”
It is not. Use PNG, WebP or AVIF for raster transparency, or SVG for vector artwork.
“One compression percentage applies everywhere”
Results vary by source content, encoder and settings. Publish measurements only with those conditions attached.

FAQ
Should a website use JPG or PNG?
Use JPG for most photographs when lossy compression and broad compatibility fit the requirement. Use PNG for transparency, screenshots, text and line art where exact edges matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs WebP better than AVIF?
Neither is always better. Compare the exported files at your target dimensions and quality, then account for the browsers and applications your audience uses.
What format should a logo use?
Use SVG when the logo is vector artwork and must scale cleanly. Provide a raster export when a consuming system cannot render SVG.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert JPEG to PNG to improve quality?
No. Converting cannot restore detail already discarded by JPEG compression; it only changes the container and encoding.
Do image formats affect accessibility?
The format does not replace accessible implementation. Use accurate alternative text, intrinsic dimensions and sufficient contrast regardless of the file type.
