Choose HomePod mini if you want a compact Siri speaker for a smaller space, AirPlay, and smart-home control. Choose HomePod (2nd generation) if you want its larger speaker hardware or plan to use it for Spatial Audio with a compatible Apple TV 4K setup. Both models support Siri, Thread, temperature and humidity sensing, and AirPlay multi-room audio; they cannot be mixed in a stereo pair.
HomePod mini vs. HomePod (2nd generation): the key differences
Apple introduced HomePod mini in 2020 and HomePod (2nd generation) in 2023. The full-size model is substantially larger and lists a different speaker array. These specifications help distinguish the products, but they are not comparative listening-test results or an absolute sound-quality ranking.

Which HomePod should you buy?
Choose HomePod mini for a compact speaker
The mini’s smaller footprint suits a desk, bedside table, or room where you do not want a larger speaker. It provides Siri, AirPlay, and smart-home features, alongside a full-range driver and two passive radiators. Pick it when compact size is the priority rather than a particular full-size audio feature.
Choose HomePod (2nd generation) for its larger speaker hardware and Apple TV audio
The full-size model has a 4-inch woofer, five tweeters, room sensing, and automatic bass correction. Apple also lists Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos for compatible content in supported apps; an Apple TV 4K is required for that use and is sold separately. Consider this model if those hardware features or an Apple TV-based audio setup matter to you.

Choose by room, setup, and whether you need one speaker or a pair
Think about where the speaker will sit, how much space it can occupy, and whether your goal is a single speaker or a stereo pair. A stereo pair requires two units of the same model: two minis or two HomePod (2nd generation) speakers. A mini and a full-size HomePod cannot form a stereo pair.
What both HomePod models can do
Siri, AirPlay, and multi-room audio
Both models support Siri and AirPlay multi-room audio. Apple lists Apple Music and other audio sources, though Apple Music requires a subscription and third-party services may also require one. You can also stream audio from Apple devices using AirPlay.

Smart-home control through HomePod
HomePod can act as a home hub for HomeKit or Matter accessories. Apple says you can control compatible accessories by voice at home or through the Home app when away, and use automations triggered by time, location, or another accessory. Examples include lights, thermostats, and window shades (Apple HomePod User Guide).
Thread support does not mean every Thread product will work. Apple specifies HomeKit- or Matter-enabled Thread accessories, and Thread-based accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub. Apple lists Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, and third-party Thread border routers as examples. Check the accessory’s supported standards and availability in your region before buying.

Temperature and humidity sensing
Both models include temperature and humidity sensors. Apple says sensing is optimized for indoor domestic conditions around 15°C to 30°C and 30% to 70% relative humidity. Accuracy may decrease during extended high-volume playback, and the sensor needs time to calibrate after startup. Treat the readings as a convenience, not as a substitute for a dedicated instrument when precise measurement matters (Apple HomePod User Guide).
Apple TV controls
HomePod can use Siri to control Apple TV 4K playback. Apple’s guide gives examples such as starting or controlling playback and turning subtitles on.
