It is a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, not a sequel. If you want the central Master Chief campaign story, play Halo: Combat Evolved or Campaign Evolved, then Halo 2 and Halo 3. That is a useful short path, not a required checklist.
Do you need to play older Halo games first?
No. Campaign Evolved retells the campaign of Halo: Combat Evolved, so you can begin with the remake without finishing earlier Halo games. Halo Studios recommends that brand-new players start with the original missions because their tutorials help onboard players. The studio also says the three new prequel missions can be played as soon as the game launches. Read Halo Studios’ July Community Q&A.

If you prefer to experience the original game rather than its remake, choose Combat Evolved instead. You do not need to play both versions before moving on.
Which games matter most for the Master Chief story?
| Game | Story relevance | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo: Campaign Evolved | The opening campaign; the latter is a remake preserving the original campaign experience. | Choose one as your starting point. |
| Halo 2 | Next in the short path through the central Master Chief campaign story. | Play after either version of the first campaign. |
| Halo 3 | Continues that short central campaign path. | Play after Halo 2. |
| Halo Infinite | A later Master Chief campaign, set on Zeta Halo. | Add it if you want more of the Chief’s story. |
This is an editorially useful route, not a claim that every Halo story fits into a fully established official chronology. The official information cited here identifies the remake and describes Infinite’s campaign, but does not set out a complete chronology for every title.

Should you play Halo Infinite?
Halo Infinite is optional for a first visit to Campaign Evolved. Its campaign is a separate paid or subscription-access offering and follows Master Chief on Zeta Halo. The game’s multiplayer is free, but that does not mean its campaign is included at no cost. Availability and campaign access depend on platform and subscription; check the current storefront or subscription terms for your region. See Halo Infinite’s official game page.
Are Halo: Reach, ODST, or the books required?
No additional game or book is required for the short Master Chief campaign route above. Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST are optional extras; the official sources cited here do not establish them as prerequisites for Campaign Evolved.

The books are optional background, too. Halo Waypoint describes Halo: The Fall of Reach as covering Master Chief’s origins, the SPARTAN-II program, and events leading to the discovery of Halo. Halo: The Flood retells Combat Evolved with additional perspectives. They can add context, but you can understand the game campaigns without reading them. Browse Halo Waypoint’s official book guide.
