One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThere is no single graphics driver that makes an autonomous system safe. For modern GPU graphics and compute, Vulkan SC is the safety-critical API to evaluate; OpenGL SC 2.0 is a smaller option for display-focused systems. A product such as CoreAVI VkCore SC is a commercial implementation to assess, but the selected driver, GPU, application and evidence must all fit the system’s safety case.
What makes a graphics driver safety-critical?
A normal graphics stack is designed for broad functionality and performance. A safety-critical stack must also support predictable, testable behavior that can be evaluated as part of a system safety case. The API defines how software requests GPU work; the driver implements that interface on particular hardware. Neither API conformance nor choosing a safety-oriented API, by itself, certifies an autonomous vehicle, robot or other system.
For graphics and compute to contribute to a safety case, engineers need evidence about the behavior of the complete stack: application, API implementation, driver, GPU and relevant system software. The central engineering concerns include bounded and predictable execution, explicit scheduling and synchronization, resource control, and clear fault reporting. The exact evidence and assurance process depend on the target domain and applicable certification requirements.
Vulkan SC and OpenGL SC 2.0: which API fits?
| Option | Scope and fit | Safety-oriented characteristics | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vulkan SC | Graphics and compute; based on Vulkan 1.2 | Khronos describes it as streamlined, deterministic and robust, with explicit control of device scheduling, synchronization and resource management. | Consider it for modern GPU workloads, including systems that need both graphics and compute. Confirm that a suitable driver exists for the target GPU and certification context. |
| OpenGL SC 2.0 | A royalty-free, cross-platform subset of OpenGL ES 2.0 for high-reliability displays | Khronos says it is designed to be deterministic and testable, removing nonessential functionality to reduce implementation and certification cost. | Consider it for display-focused applications or where an existing OpenGL ES-based design makes migration relevant. It is not the same API scope as Vulkan SC’s graphics-and-compute focus. |
The choice is not simply “newer versus older.” Vulkan SC is the more relevant candidate when the workload needs a modern graphics-and-compute API and explicit control over GPU work. OpenGL SC 2.0 may be a better fit for a bounded, display-oriented system or a design that benefits from its OpenGL ES lineage. In either case, check implementation support for the exact GPU and obtain the safety documentation needed for the intended system.

Which safety standards apply?
Certification targets depend on the system’s domain; they are not interchangeable labels for one universal graphics certification. Khronos identifies the following standards as targets for its safety-critical APIs:
- Automotive: ISO 26262, including ASIL D as a target for Vulkan SC and OpenGL SC 2.0.
- Avionics: RTCA DO-178C and EASA ED-12C, up to Level A for Vulkan SC; OpenGL SC 2.0 addresses DO-178C/ED-12C requirements.
- Industrial systems: IEC 61508 is among Vulkan SC’s stated targets.
- Medical devices: IEC 62304 is among Vulkan SC’s stated targets.
These are standards and target levels associated with the APIs’ intended use and related implementations—not proof that every driver or product conforms, nor a declaration that a complete autonomous system is certified. Confirm the exact standard, level, package scope and evidence available for the specific implementation under consideration.

What driver implementations and hardware are documented?
CoreAVI VkCore SC
CoreAVI describes VkCore SC as a commercial Vulkan SC-aligned graphics and compute driver. Its product offerings include packages for DO-178C/ED-12C, ISO 26262 ASIL D and IEC 61508 SIL 3. CoreAVI also offers VkCoreGL SC libraries for OpenGL SC applications. Treat package names as a starting point for due diligence: verify the particular GPU, software configuration, certification scope and assessor evidence relevant to your project.
Arm Mali-G78AE example
Khronos cites Arm’s Mali-G78AE paired with CoreAVI’s ISO 26262-certified Vulkan SC driver as an autonomous-system platform example. This documents a specific platform pairing; it does not establish compatibility or certification for other Mali GPUs, driver versions, applications or system configurations.

Imagination functional-safety GPU IP
Imagination describes automotive GPU IP with hardware and software mechanisms intended to detect faults and mitigate risk in dashboards, head-up displays and advanced driver-assistance systems. GPU IP is not itself a graphics driver or API. If considering it, assess how its safety mechanisms integrate with the chosen driver and the complete system safety case.

- Define the workload and safety role. Identify whether the GPU handles display output, graphics, compute or a combination, and what hazards depend on its correct operation.
- Match API scope to the application. Compare Vulkan SC’s graphics-and-compute scope with OpenGL SC 2.0’s display-oriented profile. Include compatibility and migration effort from the existing OpenGL ES or Vulkan stack.
- Check deterministic behavior and controls. Ask how device scheduling, synchronization and resource use are managed, and what execution bounds and assumptions the implementation documents.
- Review fault handling. Establish which faults the hardware and software can detect, how they are reported, and what behavior or recovery the system can rely on. Do not infer recovery guarantees from the word “robust.”
- Confirm hardware and software coverage. Verify support for the exact GPU architecture, driver and application configuration; portability of the API does not establish that a certified implementation is available on every GPU.
- Map assurance evidence to the target standard. Obtain the applicable certification package and determine its scope, target level, assumptions and assessor evidence for your domain.
- Check conformance evidence. Khronos says the Vulkan SC conformance test suite helps implementers verify compatibility with the specification and portability. Conformance supports API compatibility evaluation; it does not replace safety certification of the implementation or system.
What the API choice does—and does not—establish
A safety-oriented API narrows and structures the software interface so that implementations can aim for deterministic, testable operation. A corresponding driver must realize that behavior on particular hardware, and the integrator must show how the configured stack meets the system’s safety requirements. That is why a credible selection decision depends on implementation-specific documentation, not merely on whether a product supports Vulkan SC or OpenGL SC.
For a new graphics-and-compute design, begin by evaluating Vulkan SC implementations for the target GPU and applicable standard. For a display-only design or an existing OpenGL ES lineage, evaluate OpenGL SC 2.0. In both cases, make certification scope, fault behavior, hardware coverage and available evidence explicit procurement requirements.
