The settings that matter are vendor-specific: NVIDIA offers a shader-cache size limit (and Linux OpenGL cache controls), AMD Software offers an optimized cache setting and a reset action, and Intel offers downloadable precompiled shaders for eligible systems and supported Steam games. These controls affect whether compiled shader work can be reused; they are not universal stutter fixes. Leave defaults in place unless you are troubleshooting a repeatable problem.

What shader caching changes

Graphics drivers and games may compile shaders—programs used to render visual effects—before or during play. A usable cached result can be reused instead of compiled again, reducing repeated work. If a cache is disabled, cleared, or too small to retain relevant files, compilation may recur. That can mean extra loading or pauses, but a hitch can have other causes too.

Cache controls are not interchangeable. Their scope depends on the GPU vendor, operating system, graphics API, game, and driver. There is no supported cache-size figure that works best for every vendor and game.

NVIDIA: set the cache size in Windows

In NVIDIA Control Panel, open Manage 3D settings and find Shader Cache Size. This sets the maximum disk space the driver may use for compiled shaders. NVIDIA lists Disabled, Unlimited, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB, and 100 GB as options in its Control Panel reference.

When the cache approaches its limit, older shaders may be removed. NVIDIA warns that a limit that is too small can evict shaders still in use and contribute to stutter. Choose a ceiling that can accommodate the games you normally play while leaving enough free disk space; there is no universal recommended number. Disabling the cache removes the reuse benefit.

NVIDIA says installing a new driver deletes the cache, so the first game run afterward may stutter while shaders are compiled again. This behavior is distinct from a size setting that is too low.

NVIDIA: Linux OpenGL controls

NVIDIA documents separate controls for its Linux OpenGL driver. These are not general Windows settings or universal controls for Vulkan.

Control Effect
__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE Enables or disables the disk cache.
__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_PATH Sets the cache location.
__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SIZE Sets the cache size.
GLShaderDiskCache X configuration option for the cache; the environment variables override it.

In NVIDIA’s 550.76 documentation, the cache is normally enabled for direct rendering as a non-root user, disabled by default for direct rendering as root, and disabled for indirect rendering and setuid/setgid binaries. Cache files persist across application runs but are specific to driver versions, so changing driver versions leads to recompilation. See NVIDIA’s Linux OpenGL environment-variable documentation for the exact scope.

AMD: keep Shader Cache on AMD optimized by default

AMD Software sets Shader Cache to AMD optimized by default and offers a global option to disable it. AMD explains that caching avoids regenerating frequently used game shaders, helping faster loading and lower CPU usage. Its guidance is in Configure AMD Radeon Settings for Ultimate Gaming Experience.

AMD Software also has a Reset Shader Cache action documented in Customize Graphics Settings with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Resetting forces shader work to be recreated as needed. AMD’s cited material does not establish that disabling the cache or repeatedly resetting it is a general stutter remedy.

Intel: Precompiled Shaders are a separate feature

Intel Precompiled Shader Distribution is not a cache-size slider. On eligible systems, Intel Graphics Software and the driver check for shader files prepared for the matching hardware and driver configuration, then download and store them locally. The feature is disabled by default on supported systems. To enable it, use Graphics → 3D Rendering → Precompiled Shaders.

Intel’s support article, last reviewed March 16, 2026, lists these requirements: an eligible Intel GPU family, Windows 10 or 11, driver 32.0.101.8626 or newer, an internet connection for downloading, at least 1 GB of disk space, and a Steam-installed game on Intel’s supported list. Unsupported games use standard shader compilation. Downloaded shader files can be used offline after the initial download. Intel says files are typically under 100 MB per supported game, though the amount varies.

Intel estimates 20–50% faster initial loading times with the feature, but says results vary by game and system configuration. This is Intel’s estimate, not an independent cross-vendor benchmark or a promise of a specific result. Intel also says the feature does not change visual quality and that updated files are downloaded when available for a new driver version. See Intel Precompiled Shaders for eligibility and supported games.

What to check when compilation causes pauses

  1. Identify the scope. Check your GPU vendor, operating system, graphics API, driver, and control panel. A Linux NVIDIA OpenGL environment variable does not apply to every graphics API or platform.
  2. If the issue began after a driver update, wait for reported processing. Intel says shader processing after an update can cause brief pauses on Intel Arc. Its guidance is to let processing reach 100% before fully starting the game; Intel says performance should then stabilize in the scenario described. See Intel’s Arc post-update stuttering guidance. Intel also documents that a clean driver installation clears the shader cache in its driver clean-install instructions.
  3. Check whether reuse is disabled or constrained. On NVIDIA Windows, inspect Shader Cache Size and available disk space. On AMD, the default is AMD optimized. Change a setting only when there is a specific, reproducible reason.
  4. Reset only as targeted troubleshooting. Clearing a cache removes reusable results and can require shader work again on subsequent runs. Do not treat repeated resets as routine maintenance.
  5. For Intel Precompiled Shaders, verify eligibility and download status. Confirm the supported GPU, driver, Windows version, Steam installation, and game listing; the feature cannot pre-download shaders for unsupported games.

How to choose the right action

Situation Reasonable next step Trade-off or limit
First run after a driver update Allow vendor-reported shader processing to finish before judging ordinary gameplay. Driver changes can invalidate or clear cached shaders, so compilation may recur.
Repeated pauses during normal play Check the vendor’s cache setting and whether its size or availability is constrained. Cache settings only address shader reuse; they do not explain every stutter.
Considering a cache reset Use the reset as a focused troubleshooting step, then let shaders rebuild. Previously cached work is lost and may need to be repeated.
Eligible Intel system and supported Steam game Enable Precompiled Shaders and allow the initial download to complete. Unsupported games continue standard compilation; Intel’s loading-time estimate varies by game and system.

Official vendor material explains the controls and some update-related behavior, but it does not provide an independent comparison showing that one cache configuration improves frame times across GPUs and games. Treat a setting change as a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed performance upgrade.
