You can play Gears of War: E-Day first; no earlier game is required. Xbox describes it as an origin story set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. For optional background on Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, and the series’ world, play Gears of War: Reloaded, then Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3.
Do you need to play another Gears of War game before E-Day?
No. Xbox’s E-Day listing places the story fourteen years before the original game and frames it as the story of Marcus and Dom at the beginning of the Locust invasion. You can start here without knowing the later games’ plot.

The developers have described E-Day as an origin story about Marcus and Dom’s bond, and as a new mainline entry set earlier in the timeline—not a spin-off. That makes prior games useful background rather than prerequisites. The game is already available: Xbox lists an October 6, 2026 release for Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, and its listing says it is included with Game Pass. Xbox also says it is available on Steam and with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass; check the relevant regional store for current purchase and subscription details.
What should you play first for optional context?
If you want to know the characters and setting before starting E-Day, the original trilogy is the most direct route. Begin with Gears of War: Reloaded, the remastered and modernized original, then continue in release-story order:

This is an optional primer, not an order prescribed by Xbox. If you have time for only one earlier game, choose Gears of War: Reloaded: it is the original entry and offers the clearest introduction to the characters and setting that E-Day revisits. How do the other Gears games fit?

The Coalition has said it is not abandoning the stories told in Gears 4 and Gears 5. Save them for later if you want to follow that later storyline; they are not needed to understand this earlier-set origin story.

What earlier games add to E-Day
The original games show a world already devastated by war. That familiarity can make E-Day’s earlier setting—and the contrast between society before the destruction and the world players know from the original trilogy—more meaningful. In a September 2026 Xbox Podcast transcript, Creative Director Matt Searcy discussed that contrast with host Jeff Rubenstein. It is an extra layer of context, not information you need in order to follow E-Day.

- Shortest route: Start with E-Day.
- One-game introduction: Play Gears of War: Reloaded, then E-Day.
- More original-trilogy context: Play Reloaded, Gears of War 2, and Gears of War 3, then E-Day.
- For extra timeline detail: Add Gears of War: Judgment if you want, but it is not required.
