A Garmin watch may offer both a settings-only reset and a more destructive reset that erases personal data. What disappears depends on the model and the menu option: Garmin’s Venu 2 instructions say its “Delete Data and Reset Settings” option removes activity history, user-entered information, the Garmin Pay wallet on the watch, and locally stored music. Check your model’s exact reset instructions and sync before choosing.
What a Garmin factory reset can erase
“Factory reset” is not one uniform operation across Garmin watches. A settings-only option can restore settings and profiles to their defaults while preserving user-entered information and activity history. A data-erasing option can reset settings and delete that information. The names and effects vary by model, so treat these examples as model-specific rather than universal.
| Item | What Garmin’s guidance establishes |
|---|---|
| Settings and profiles | Resetting a device to defaults reverts settings and profiles. Depending on the model, these may include user and device settings, bike profiles, and sport-profile fields, alerts, and layouts. Garmin’s manual backup guidance describes these file types; file structure varies by watch. |
| Activities and user-entered information | For the Venu 2 Series, Garmin says “Delete Data and Reset Settings” deletes user-entered information and activity history. Other models may have separate controls for deleting activities or resetting totals. Venu 2 reset instructions and the D2 Air X15 instructions provide examples. |
| Totals and saved items | Records, courses, locations, and time or distance totals are among the device files Garmin identifies as relevant to backup or recovery. The reviewed guidance does not establish that every reset erases every category on every watch; check the specific model’s instructions. |
| Garmin Pay wallet and music | Garmin explicitly says the Venu 2’s “Delete Data and Reset Settings” option removes the wallet configured on the watch and music stored on it. Garmin also notes this effect in its D2 Air X15 instructions. |
| Connect IQ content | Garmin’s manual file-copy guidance does not include Connect IQ apps, which must be downloaded again from the Connect IQ Store. On compatible watches, Garmin’s account-based backup can include Connect IQ Store content; the available recovery route depends on the watch and backup method. |
| Garmin Connect account data | A compatible watch’s backup is stored through Garmin Connect. Garmin says profile information, heart-rate and power zones, and sleep schedule data are saved in the account rather than included in the watch backup. Garmin Pay wallet information is not backed up and must be recreated if reset removes it. |
Settings reset versus data-erasing reset
Read the exact option label and description on the watch before confirming. On the D2 Air X15, Garmin lists several distinct actions, including “Reset Default Settings,” “Delete All Activities,” “Reset Totals,” “Delete Data and Reset Settings,” and “Delete Temporary Files.” A settings-default action is not necessarily equivalent to deleting data.
Garmin’s Venu 2 and D2 Air X15 instructions explicitly describe destructive effects for “Delete Data and Reset Settings.” Garmin’s Approach guidance also distinguishes some procedures that restore defaults without deleting activities from a master reset that deletes saved data. Do not assume that another model uses the same labels or preserves the same items.

How to protect data before resetting
- Sync the watch. Garmin recommends syncing with Garmin Connect to upload activity data before resetting. Some Approach devices may upload through Garmin Golf instead. Garmin’s Venu 2 support page says: “You should sync your device with the Garmin Connect app to upload your activity data before you reset the device.”
- Check whether the watch supports Backup & Restore. Only select watches have built-in backup. Garmin says the owner’s manual’s “System Settings” section can help establish compatibility. On supported watches, a daily backup may be made by default, and you can request one immediately; a pending backup must sync to Garmin Connect to upload.
- Check what the backup includes. Supported backup items can include activity and app lists, activity settings, watch-face customization, glances, Connect IQ content, saved alarms and timers, and paired sensors. Some watches let you additionally select workouts, courses, and saved locations. Garmin Pay wallet information is excluded.
- Consider a manual file copy if the watch is older or incompatible. Depending on the model, Garmin’s guidance identifies courses, locations, records, settings, sport profiles, totals, and some weight files as items that may be copied. This method does not back up Connect IQ apps.
- Follow the exact model’s reset procedure. Menu wording and available controls differ. Use the current Garmin manual or support page for your watch, and verify what the selected option deletes before confirming.
What to do after a reset
If you made a compatible Garmin Connect backup, use the watch’s Backup & Restore process to restore the items it supports. Items outside that backup may need separate recovery: Garmin Pay wallet information must be recreated if removed, while Connect IQ apps may need to be downloaded again if they were not included in the backup method used. Do not treat a watch backup as a copy of every item associated with your Garmin account.
