The best-documented Echo speakers with an AUX input are the Echo (3rd generation), Echo Plus (2nd generation), and Echo Studio (2019 release). The first two have a 3.5 mm jack described as switchable between line-in and line-out; the 2019 Studio has a 3.5 mm analog AUX/mini-optical line-in. Exact generation matters: these features do not apply to every Echo, and a recent report says Alexa voice control of AUX input was disabled on selected older models.
Which Echo models have AUX input?
“AUX input” means the Echo can receive audio from another device and play it through its speaker. Amazon documentation and an Amazon forum response identify these models:
| Model | Port and direction | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Echo (3rd generation) | 3.5 mm jack; described as switchable between line-in and line-out | An Amazon forum response identifies the full-size model’s switchable jack. Ars Technica reported that Alexa voice control of AUX input was disabled on this model on October 6, 2026; that report does not establish whether wired playback or another control method still works. Amazon forum; Ars Technica |
| Echo Plus (2nd generation) | 3.5 mm jack; described as switchable between line-in and line-out | The Amazon forum response names this generation. Amazon’s historical fact sheet also identifies Echo Plus as supporting line-in and line-out, but its extracted comparison table does not specify a generation. Ars Technica reported the same voice-control change for this model. Amazon forum; Amazon fact sheet; Ars Technica |
| Echo Studio (2019 release) | 3.5 mm AUX/mini-optical line-in | Amazon’s compliance specifications list the port as “3.5 mm AUX/MINI-Optical Line-In.” The forum response describes the Studio as input-only. Ars Technica reported that Alexa voice control was disabled on this model. Amazon specifications; Amazon forum; Ars Technica |
| Echo Studio (2025 release) | Port specification not stated in the reviewed Amazon product pages | Amazon lists the 2025 and 2019 Studio as separate releases. The 2019 model’s port specification should not be assumed to apply to the 2025 model. Amazon specifications; Amazon Echo Studio device information |
| Echo Dot and Echo Input | Historical Amazon comparison sheet identifies line-out, not line-in, for the listed devices | The sheet’s extracted table does not identify generations. Echo Input is an Alexa adapter for an external speaker, not an Echo speaker with an AUX input. Amazon fact sheet; Amazon device identification |
| Echo (4th generation) | Input-port specification not established by the reviewed sources | Ars Technica names it in its report about voice-control changes, which by itself does not establish that it has an AUX input. Ars Technica |
The generation-level guidance for the Echo (3rd generation) and Echo Plus (2nd generation) comes from an Amazon forum response. Amazon’s older comparison sheet provides independent support for line-in and line-out on an Echo Plus, but does not name its generation in the extracted table. Amazon’s official product specifications are the strongest evidence for the original Echo Studio’s port.
What does an AUX input do?
A line-in connection sends audio into the Echo from a compatible external source, so the Echo plays that source’s sound. Line-out does the opposite: it sends audio from the Echo to separate equipment. A jack described as switchable can serve either direction, but its direction and control behavior depend on the model and current software.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a compatible analog source, a 3.5 mm stereo AUX cable is the relevant connection. For an optical source connected to the Echo Studio (2019 release), use a mini-TOSLINK optical connection. Check the source’s output, the Echo’s exact generation, and the cable ends before buying; Amazon’s port specification does not provide a full compatibility chart for source devices.
Can you still switch to AUX input with Alexa?
Ars Technica reported on October 6, 2026 that Amazon had disabled Alexa voice control of AUX input on the Echo Plus (2nd generation), Echo (3rd generation), Echo Studio (2019), and Echo (4th generation). The report says voice requests such as “play from line in” or “set aux input” no longer work on the affected models.

This is a report about voice control, not proof that the physical port has failed. The reviewed sources do not establish, model by model, whether a wired signal can still play, what manual or app controls remain, or whether behavior varies by region or software version. If you own one of these devices, verify current operation and available controls for your specific model before relying on it as a wired speaker.

No. Amazon describes Echo Input as a device that “adds Alexa to an external speaker and connects via 3.5-mm audio cable or Bluetooth.” It sends Alexa audio to an existing speaker; it is not itself an Echo speaker accepting audio from a phone or other source through line-in.
