For an Aadhaar update, the right document depends on which detail you are changing: proof of identity (PoI), proof of address (PoA), proof of relationship, and proof of date of birth are separate categories. An Indian passport, ration or PDS card, and voter identity card are common examples that may serve as both identity and address proof; a driving licence or PAN/e-PAN is commonly used for identity, not as a general substitute for address proof. Check the current UIDAI list for the exact document and its conditions before applying.
Start with the Aadhaar detail you are updating
UIDAI does not treat every accepted document as interchangeable. First identify whether your update needs PoI, PoA, proof of relationship, or proof of date of birth. The 2026 First Amendment to the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulations includes a document matrix that marks eligibility by category. Check the current UIDAI document matrix for the exact item and any conditions.
A document can qualify for one purpose without qualifying for another. For example, a driving licence or PAN/e-PAN may be a PoI example, but that does not make it acceptable as PoA. Likewise, address evidence does not automatically establish identity or date of birth.
Examples of documents accepted for identity, address, or both
These are examples from UIDAI guidance, not a substitute for checking the current matrix. Eligibility can depend on the document type, issuer, format, recency, and other conditions.

The amended matrix also includes examples such as government, PSU, regulatory-body or statutory-body service photo identity cards; pensioner or freedom-fighter identity documents; Kisan photo passbooks; MGNREGA/NREGS job cards; and domicile certificates. The category marked for each document matters, so confirm its current row rather than relying on the name alone.
Check an address document before submitting it online
For an online address update, choose a PoA document from UIDAI’s supporting-document list. It should be in the Aadhaar holder’s name and show the address being entered. UIDAI’s online address update service accepts document scans or images; its FAQ specifies PDF or JPEG uploads. Follow the live service’s instructions, because requirements and available features can change.

- Match the address: Enter the address as it appears on the proof.
- Check the document’s condition: Confirm it is within any stated recency period and has any required issuer details, signature, stamp, or validity.
- Use a clear colour scan of the original: Blurry, incomplete, or non-colour images may cause rejection.
- Include all required pages: UIDAI says some multi-page documents, including passports and rental or property agreements, may need images of multiple pages.
UIDAI lists common reasons for rejecting an online address update as an unlisted proof document, a document not in the applicant’s name, an address that does not match, or an upload that is not a clear colour scan of the original. A request is subject to verification and validation; submitting a document does not itself mean the update is approved.
When an update needs an Aadhaar Seva Kendra
The UIDAI FAQ for the online address service says date-of-birth updates are not available through that service and directs applicants to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with date-of-birth proof. Check UIDAI’s current instructions for the required proof and appointment or visit procedure before going.
