For most desktop setups with two speakers, start with the correct Windows output selected, the speaker layout set to stereo, spatial sound off, and audio enhancements disabled. Then check the game’s audio menu and test optional processing one setting at a time. A multichannel layout or spatial effect may suit a particular system or game, but there is no universally best setting for every setup.
1. Select the speakers you are actually using
First make sure Windows is sending audio to the intended speakers, rather than a monitor, headset, controller, or another connected device. Microsoft includes checking the selected output device among its basic sound troubleshooting steps. Also check the game’s audio settings if it offers its own output-device selector.
2. Match the Windows speaker layout to your hardware
Two desktop speakers
For a conventional pair of speakers, configure the system as stereo. Windows should describe the connected setup, not a surround system you do not own. Plaion’s PC audio configuration guidance distinguishes stereo speakers from physical 5.1 and 7.1 systems and advises configuring the corresponding layout.
Physical 5.1 or 7.1 speakers
Choose a multichannel layout only when those speakers are connected and the game or audio output supports the channels. A layout setting cannot create missing physical speakers. The Plaion guidance also gives configuration instructions for multichannel systems in its documented PC audio context; its recommendations should not be assumed to apply identically to every game.

3. Treat spatial sound as an option to compare
Windows Sonic is a spatial sound option available in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft describes it as “a spatial sound solution in Windows that can enhance your movie or gaming experience,” and documents how to select it in its spatial sound instructions. That description does not establish that Sonic improves every game, stereo speaker pair, or competitive result.
For a straightforward stereo baseline, begin with spatial sound off. If you want to try Windows Sonic, enable it and compare the result in the game you play. Keep it only if you prefer what you hear. Microsoft notes that games can use different audio rendering approaches, so the way spatial sound interacts with a game and selected output can vary. Windows may also offer Dolby Access and DTS Sound Unbound as additional spatial sound options; availability and behavior depend on the installed options and setup.

4. Leave audio enhancements off at first
Windows audio processing can include effects such as loudness equalization, bass boost, room correction, speaker fill, and virtual surround. These are optional processing choices, not required gaming optimizations. Microsoft’s audio processing documentation describes several such effects.
Start with enhancements disabled, especially if you are trying to establish a predictable baseline or diagnose a problem. Microsoft says enhancements can sometimes cause audio issues and recommends turning them off as a troubleshooting step in its Windows sound troubleshooting guidance. If you want to experiment, enable one effect at a time so you can tell which change affected the sound.

5. Check the game’s own audio menu
After setting up Windows, inspect the game’s audio menu for speaker layout, output mode, or spatial-audio options. Names and choices vary by game, and the game’s rendering path can affect how its audio combines with Windows or driver processing. Compare available modes in the actual game instead of automatically enabling several surround or spatial effects at once. The available documentation does not support one universal in-game choice.

- Select the speakers you are using in Windows Sound settings, then confirm the game is also outputting to them.
- Set the Windows speaker layout to stereo for two speakers, or to the matching multichannel layout for a connected 5.1 or 7.1 system.
- Begin with spatial sound off. If desired, compare Windows Sonic or another available spatial option in the game.
- Keep enhancements off initially. Test any effect you want to try individually.
- Review the game’s audio options and keep the combination that sounds preferable on your setup.
If audio becomes distorted, unusually quiet, or otherwise unexpected after changing settings, turn enhancements off and recheck the selected output and speaker layout before changing other processing options.
