Allow only the permissions needed for a feature you intend to use. For real-money casino apps, location may be needed to check regional eligibility; if so, choose access only while using the app or a one-time option when available. Deny contacts, SMS, call logs, microphone, camera, and broad file access unless the app clearly explains why a feature you want needs them. You can review or revoke permissions later in your phone’s settings.
Quick guide: allow only what a feature needs
| Permission | Practical choice | When it may make sense |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Usually deny unless needed; if needed, choose “while using” or “Ask every time” rather than “All the time.” | A real-money feature may check whether play is permitted in your region. Rules and availability depend on location. |
| Camera or photos | Deny by default; grant limited or temporary access if offered. | You choose a particular image-based verification or support feature. |
| Microphone | Deny for ordinary browsing and gameplay. | You deliberately use a voice feature and understand why it needs audio access. |
| Contacts, SMS, call logs, phone, calendar, or broad files | Deny unless a clearly explained feature you want depends on them. | The app identifies the specific feature and the access requested is proportionate. |
| Notifications | Optional. | Allow if you want alerts; turn them off if they become unwanted. |
A permission allows access to a particular kind of device feature or information, not a general stamp of approval for an app. Android, for example, defines camera access as the ability to take pictures and record video, contacts access as access to the address book, and microphone access as the ability to record audio. Judge the permission by the data or capability it exposes, not by the app’s branding. Google’s Android permission guide describes these categories.
Why location is the main possible exception
Real-money gambling may be subject to regional restrictions, so an app can have a legitimate reason to check location for eligibility. That does not mean every casino app needs continuous background access. If the relevant function works with access only while the app is open, or with a one-time request, prefer that narrower scope. Android’s available choices depend on the permission, device, and Android version; location may offer “All the time,” “Allow only while using the app,” “Ask every time,” or “Don’t allow.”
A 2022 study, Analyzing Ground-Truth Data of Mobile Gambling Scams, found that genuine gambling apps in its dataset requested location more often than scam apps; the authors suggested regional legal restrictions as a possible explanation. This is a group-level finding, not proof that any one app is legitimate or entitled to always-on location access. The study examined scam apps linked to 1,461 incident reports from January 1 through December 31, 2020, in China-related cases, and is not a current worldwide survey of licensed casino apps. Assess sensitive or unexpected requests
Contacts, SMS, call logs, microphone, camera, and broad file or media access are not self-evidently necessary for ordinary casino gameplay. Deny them unless the app gives a clear, feature-specific explanation and the requested scope makes sense for that feature. For instance, if you choose an image upload flow, access to an image may be relevant; that does not by itself justify unrestricted access to every file.
The same gambling-scam study reported that scam apps in its comparison requested more dangerous permissions. Its sample was assembled for a scam investigation, so it cannot tell you whether a specific current app is malicious. Treat an unexpected request as a reason to pause and investigate, not as conclusive evidence either way.

Change or review permissions
On Android
- Open Settings > Apps, select the casino app, then tap Permissions to review or change its access.
- To review by permission category instead, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager, then choose a category. Labels and paths can differ by Android version and device.
- For location, camera, or microphone, choose the narrowest option that still supports the feature you use. Android may offer “Allow only while using the app,” “Ask every time,” or “Don’t allow”; location may also offer “All the time.”
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security, then select a category such as Contacts, Photos, Calendars, or Motion & Fitness.
- Review which apps requested that information and switch access on or off for the casino app.
- For a further view of how apps use permissions already granted and their network activity, open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report, if available.
Apple describes App Privacy Report as showing how apps use granted permissions and their network activity. It complements permission controls; it is not a complete account of every data practice. Apple’s iPhone privacy controls guide explains category-based access and the report.

A permission screen cannot establish that a casino app is trustworthy. Before installing or using it, also check the publisher, the app-store listing and privacy disclosures, the app’s privacy policy, and licensing or regulator information relevant to your jurisdiction. Google’s developer guidance on data disclosures explains how app developers categorize data practices, but a disclosure and a permission list serve different purposes.

- Ask whether the permission supports a feature you actually intend to use.
- Check whether the app requests more data or longer access than that feature appears to require.
- Consider what happens if you deny it: a relevant feature may stop working, but unrelated app functions should not needlessly depend on unrelated access.
- Revisit permissions after setup and revoke grants that no longer serve a feature you use.
