Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse two separate safeguards: keep independent copies of your files, including an offline backup where practical, and make sure you can retrieve the BitLocker recovery key for every encrypted drive. Encryption helps protect data on a lost or stolen computer; it does not provide another copy of that data. A backup is useful only if you can restore it, which may require the recovery key.
Understand what encryption and backup each protect
BitLocker encrypts a drive to help prevent someone from reading its contents without authorization if the device is lost or stolen. Windows Device Encryption also uses BitLocker technology, but is available on a wider range of devices, including some Windows Home PCs; BitLocker Drive Encryption settings are available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. A PC can therefore be encrypted even if it does not have the Pro edition. Microsoft explains Device Encryption availability and account key handling.
Neither type of encryption creates a recoverable copy of deleted, damaged, or ransomware-encrypted files. Back up files to a destination independent of the PC, and separately keep a usable recovery route into the encrypted volume. Microsoft likewise advises users to back up important files and know where to find the recovery key in its BitLocker recovery guidance.
Build a practical home backup strategy
Keep a separate copy of important files
Choose a backup destination that is not just another folder or partition on the same PC. An external hard drive or portable SSD can serve as a local backup destination; size it for the files and backup method you use. A cloud copy can provide separation from a local incident and may be convenient for restoring individual files, but ongoing storage or service costs may apply. The right mix depends on how much data you need to protect and how quickly you need it back.

Keep one copy offline when practical
After a backup to an external drive finishes, disconnect the drive and store it separately from the PC. CISA warns that ransomware can reach an external backup drive left connected and delete or corrupt its contents. CISA’s advice on protecting device data recommends disconnecting external backup drives when they are not in use.
A cloud copy and an offline local copy address different risks: cloud storage can help if the computer or local drive is lost, while a disconnected drive is less exposed to ransomware operating on the PC. Neither choice is right for every user; consider restore convenience, separate storage, and service costs. The cited guidance does not establish one required backup schedule or a universally best application.

Test that the copy is usable
Periodically check that the backup contains the files you expect and that you can open or restore a sample. A backup that cannot be found, read, or unlocked is not a dependable recovery plan. Keep the recovery key accessible separately, because Windows recovery operations may require it.
Find and protect the BitLocker recovery key
The BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit number. Microsoft says its Support team cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost key, so confirm that you have a copy you can access before a drive asks for it. Microsoft’s recovery-key instructions describe saving it to a Microsoft account, a USB flash drive, a text file, or a printout. A text file cannot be saved to the encrypted drive itself.

Store key copies securely and apart from the computer they unlock. Microsoft specifically warns against keeping a key-bearing USB drive or printout with the PC: someone with both could bypass the encryption. Multiple copies can improve availability, but each copy needs appropriate custody. A USB used to store a recovery key is not automatically a Windows recovery drive; they are separate uses, and neither is a backup of personal files.
On a personal PC, the key may be associated with the Microsoft account used on the device. If encryption was enabled using a work or school account, the organization may manage the key. In either case, verify the key is present and that you can retrieve it rather than assuming it was saved correctly.

Use Windows recovery tools as additional safeguards
Prepare a recovery drive before Windows stops working
Windows can create a recovery drive from a working installation. The process erases the USB drive selected, so use one whose contents you have backed up. Label and store the finished drive safely, separate from the PC. Microsoft describes this as a last-resort recovery option, not a substitute for file backups. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
Expect recovery operations to ask for the key
Most Windows Recovery Environment options require the BitLocker recovery key to access an encrypted drive. A recovery drive may help repair or reinstall Windows, but it does not guarantee that personal files can be restored. Keep it and the key available through separate, secure routes.

Do not treat point-in-time restore as a long-term backup
Microsoft’s current documentation says Windows 11 point-in-time restore requires version 24H2 or later and retains restore points for up to 72 hours. If BitLocker is enabled, the key is needed to perform a restore. Files stored in OneDrive or another cloud service are not affected by that particular restore. These constraints make the feature useful for a recent system recovery, not a durable archive of personal files. Microsoft’s point-in-time restore documentation has the version and retention details.
Follow your organization’s process on work or school PCs
Do not create a separate recovery-key storage scheme for a managed computer without checking with IT. Microsoft recommends centrally storing recovery information in Microsoft Entra ID for Entra-joined devices and in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) for Active Directory-joined devices. Organizations can also configure policies that prevent BitLocker from being enabled until recovery information is stored. Microsoft’s BitLocker recovery overview explains the managed-device approach.
Recovery passwords can unlock the protected volume, so organizations should restrict who can retrieve them and keep the recovery information separate from the device. Ask IT how to request the key and how your work files are backed up; your employer’s backup and retention rules may differ from a home user’s.
Quick Recap
Checklist: keep both data and access recoverable
- Back up important files to a destination independent of the Windows PC.
- Keep an offline copy where practical; disconnect an external backup drive after use.
- Confirm you can retrieve the recovery key for each encrypted drive, and store it securely away from the PC.
- Prepare a Windows recovery drive while the system is working, if it suits your recovery needs, and remember that creating it erases the selected USB drive.
- For a work or school device, confirm the recovery-key and backup process with IT.
