Hi-Res Lossless uses the most data of Apple Music’s audio-quality settings. It supports resolutions up to 24-bit/192 kHz, compared with up to 24-bit/48 kHz for Lossless, and Apple says higher resolutions use more data than lower ones.
How Apple Music’s audio settings compare
| Setting | Maximum resolution | Relative data use |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless | Up to 24-bit/48 kHz | More than standard AAC; less than higher-resolution audio, according to Apple. Apple Support |
| Hi-Res Lossless | Up to 24-bit/192 kHz | The most data-intensive option in this comparison: Apple says higher resolutions use more data. Apple Support |
Apple describes Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless as using much more bandwidth and storage than standard AAC files. That establishes which direction data use changes, but not a fixed rate for every song or listening session. Apple’s cited current guidance does not give a per-hour or per-song data table by setting. Apple Music
How to reduce Apple Music data use on cellular
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality.
- Choose a lower quality for cellular streaming, or turn off Lossless Audio if you want to avoid lossless streaming over that connection.
- Review streaming and download quality separately. Apple provides controls for each, so changing one does not necessarily change the other. Apple’s iPhone guide
Apple says streamed quality can depend on the song’s availability, network conditions and the capabilities of the connected headphones or speakers. A setting is therefore a quality ceiling, not a guarantee that every stream will play at that maximum resolution. Apple’s iPhone guide
Will your headphones reproduce Hi-Res Lossless?
A high-resolution setting does not by itself ensure high-resolution playback. Apple says AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max and Beats wireless headphones use the AAC Bluetooth codec, and Bluetooth connections are not lossless, subject to the model-specific qualifications in Apple’s guidance. For iPhone playback above 48 kHz, Apple says an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is required. Apple Support Apple’s iPhone guide

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
An external DAC is relevant if you want to listen above 48 kHz from an iPhone; it is not required for ordinary Lossless. It does not reduce the data used to stream Hi-Res Lossless.
Why there is no reliable megabytes-per-hour figure here
Apple’s current support guidance says lossless streaming consumes significantly more data and that higher resolutions use more than lower ones, but it does not publish a current numeric consumption table by setting. Apple Support Apple Music Treat any precise hourly or per-track estimate as dependent on factors not quantified in those sources rather than as a universal Apple Music rate.
