Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start with screen brightness and screen-on time, then check which apps are using the battery. These are usually more useful places to investigate than switching off Android features at random. Hotspots, extended GPS use, video streaming, navigation, and demanding games can also use substantial power, but there is no reliable universal percentage ranking: the impact depends on your phone and how you use it.
For safer changes, lower brightness, shorten screen timeout, and turn off features such as a hotspot when you are not using them. Keep Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled by default on Pixel phones. Battery Saver can help when you can accept delayed background updates or notifications. Android menus and feature availability vary by manufacturer, model, and version.
Which settings and activities should you check first?
Google’s Android guidance identifies screen use, background activity, connectivity, and demanding tasks as places to look when battery life is poor. It does not assign a comparable measured percentage to each setting, so a universal ranking would be misleading. Start with the changes most relevant to your routine:
- Screen: Reduce brightness and screen-on time. Navigation, video, and graphics-heavy games keep the display active and can use substantial power.
- Apps: Check battery use by app before restricting background activity. An app with unusually high use is a more useful target than a broad restriction.
- Connectivity and location: Turn off tethering or a hotspot when you are finished, and limit location access when you do not need it. Long GPS sessions, streaming, and mobile calls while moving can also be demanding.
- Processing: Heavy tasks such as demanding games can consume more power than ordinary use.
Google notes that heat also matters: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Google’s Android battery guidance does not establish a savings figure for cooling or for any individual toggle.

Which screen changes are safe to try?
These changes mainly trade visual convenience for longer battery life. Exact labels and availability depend on the phone.
- Lower brightness: Reduce it manually, or enable Adaptive brightness if its automatic adjustments suit you.
- Shorten screen timeout: The display will turn off sooner when the phone is idle.
- Consider turning off Always-on Display or Smooth Display: Do this if the feature is available and you value battery life more than its convenience or smoother motion. Smooth Display may also turn off automatically in Pixel Battery Saver.
- Consider a static wallpaper: Google’s Pixel guidance lists live wallpapers as a feature to turn off to save some battery.
These are optional, device-specific adjustments, not universal Android switches. See Google’s Pixel battery-life guidance for Pixel-specific controls.

How do you find apps that are using too much battery?
- Open your phone’s Settings and go to its Battery section. Menu names and paths vary by manufacturer and Android version; Google directs Android users to their device manufacturer for exact steps.
- Open the battery-usage view and review the apps listed. Look for an app with high overall or background use that does not match how much you use it.
- On Pixel 6 and later, use Battery diagnostics if it is available. Google recommends keeping app background usage optimized and addressing apps identified as high users.
- Restrict background activity only for an app that is actually causing a problem. The tradeoff can include delayed syncing, updates, or notifications.
Do not force-stop essential apps or services as a general battery fix. Google warns that force-stopping some essential services can make a phone work incorrectly; Google Play services cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled on Pixel. See Google’s Pixel battery-drain troubleshooting guidance.
Should you turn off Adaptive Battery or app optimization?
On Pixel, leave Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization on by default. Adaptive Battery can limit performance or delay notifications, while optimization lets less-used apps do less work in the background. Turning optimization off can have the opposite effect: Google explains, “If you turn off battery optimization for an app, that app can run more while you’re not using it, even when Adaptive Battery is on.”

If a particular app is missing timely updates, review that app’s battery setting rather than disabling optimization across the phone. The right choice depends on whether prompt background activity matters more than battery life. These recommendations describe Pixel behavior; other Android manufacturers may provide different controls. Details are in Google’s Pixel guidance on Adaptive Battery and battery optimization.
When is Battery Saver worth using?
Use standard Battery Saver when you need more time before charging and can accept limits on background activity. On Pixel, email or news apps may refresh only when opened, location services stop when the screen is off, low-priority notifications may be delayed, and Smooth Display turns off on supported devices. Some Pixel 5G phones may switch to 4G while Battery Saver is active.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which connectivity settings should you switch off?
Treat connectivity and location controls as situational rather than turning off radios across the board. Google recommends switching off tethering or a hotspot when it is not in use, using Wi-Fi instead of mobile data where appropriate, and limiting location when it is not needed.

Turning off Location can prevent some apps and features from working, and disabling connectivity can disrupt calls, navigation, or connected devices. Keep the services you need; switch off only what is idle. Google’s general advice is in Get the most life from your Android device’s battery.
Why do Android battery menus differ?
Android settings depend on manufacturer, model, and software version. Google’s general Android instructions note that some steps require Android 13 or later and direct users to their manufacturer for device-specific paths. Pixel controls also have model and version limits: for example, Battery diagnostics is available on Pixel 6 and later, while Extreme Battery Saver is available on Pixel 3 and later, including Fold. Do not assume a toggle or menu path shown for Pixel exists on every Android phone.
What if the battery still drains quickly?
Start with the usage view and available diagnostics, then try basic troubleshooting before considering a reset.
- Review battery use by app and address any app with unusually high background or total use.
- Restart the phone and check for Android and app updates.
- If you use a Pixel, allow for battery learning after setup or a factory reset: Google says this can take a few weeks. Somewhat higher drain for a few days after a software update can also be normal while the phone optimizes.
- Consider a factory reset only after other steps fail. It removes data and apps, so back up the phone first.
For Pixel-specific troubleshooting, see Google’s battery-drain help page.
