After updating your phone, confirm that its software is current, then review the screen lock, account security, device-finding controls and app permissions. An update is a useful reminder to check these settings; the official guidance cited here does not say routine updates automatically reset them.

Start by checking the update and security overview

Android

Open Settings > Security and privacy on Android 13 and later, according to Google’s general guidance. On Android 12 and earlier, Security and Privacy may appear as separate Settings sections. Menu names and placement vary by device maker; if you do not see the named page, search Settings for “security” or “privacy.” Google’s Android security and privacy guide describes the available overview and controls.

Check the overview for warnings or recommendations, then review App security (including Google Play Protect warnings), Device lock, Accounts security, System updates, Device finders and Privacy permissions. Google also lists app pinning and lock-screen notifications among the controls you may encounter.

Confirm the system-update status shown on your phone. Google says Android operating-system and Google system-services updates can include security fixes, bug fixes and features, and that system services update automatically by default. This does not establish how every manufacturer handles its own updates or how updates are configured on every device. Google’s system-services update explanation covers those services.

iPhone

Check Settings > General > Software Update to see whether an iOS update is available. Apple Support, in guidance published April 2, 2026, says: “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” Apple’s iOS security update guidance explains its update recommendation.

Review app permissions and recent access

Android: inspect the Privacy dashboard

Open Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy dashboard, or search Settings for “Privacy dashboard” if the path differs on your phone. The dashboard shows which apps accessed permissions and when. Google documents a seven-day activity view on Android 13 and a 24-hour view on Android 12, so the history window depends on your version. Google’s Privacy dashboard guide describes the version-specific views.

Use the activity history to spot access you did not expect, then review that app’s permission and change it if appropriate. The dashboard is an activity record, not a judgment that every listed access was improper.

iPhone: review access by data category

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security and select categories such as Location Services, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, Bluetooth, Microphone, Camera, Health, or Files and Folders. You can see which apps requested access and change permissions. Apple’s privacy and Location Services guidance explains these controls.

Check account security, device finding and lock-screen exposure

On Android, use the Security and privacy overview to inspect Accounts security, Device finders and Device lock. Also consider what notifications appear while the phone is locked: a notification preview can expose information to someone who can see the screen. The precise controls and labels depend on the phone and Android version. Google’s settings guide lists these areas.

On iPhone, check that your device passcode and Apple Account access remain appropriate for you. For a broader review of sharing and account-connected devices, use Safety Check as described below; it is a separate review workflow, not a permission-activity timeline like Android’s Privacy dashboard.

Use Safety Check on iPhone to review sharing

On an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. Choose Manage Sharing & Access for a selective review of what you share with people and apps, connected Apple Account devices, verification phone numbers and selected device or account security settings. Apple explains the workflow in its Safety Check guide.

Emergency Reset is the faster option for broadly stopping sharing, not the routine choice for checking settings after an update. Use Manage Sharing & Access when you want to review items selectively.

Safety Check requires an Apple Account signed in with two-factor authentication. Some options may be unavailable if Screen Time restrictions or a mobile-device-management profile are in place. It does not review every possible source of sharing: Apple says it excludes non-Apple accounts and passwords, social-media sharing, and some sharing from other devices. See Apple’s Safety Check availability and limitations.

Consider Stolen Device Protection on a supported iPhone

Stolen Device Protection is an optional safeguard for theft-related situations. It requires iOS 17.3 or later and must be enabled before the iPhone is lost or stolen. Find it at Settings > Face ID & Passcode, or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode on a supported device. When you are away from familiar locations, it can require biometric authentication for sensitive actions and impose a security delay for selected account or device changes. Apple also allows the protections to be required everywhere. Review the feature and its requirements in Apple’s Stolen Device Protection guide.
