The right AirPods depend first on the fit you want: choose AirPods 4 with ANC for an open-fit earbud, AirPods Pro 3 for an in-ear seal with silicone tips, or AirPods Max 2 for an over-ear headphone. Their noise control, battery life and features differ, and comfort is personal—so start with form factor rather than assuming the most expensive model is best.

These are Apple’s stated maximum listening times for the listed modes, not guarantees for every listener or situation. Apple says battery life depends on device settings, environment, usage and other factors. See Apple’s AirPods model comparison for its specifications.
If fit matters more than anything else, try the style before buying where possible. An open-fit earbud, a tip-sealed earbud and an over-ear headband feel fundamentally different; specifications cannot predict which will be comfortable for you.
AirPods 4 vs AirPods Pro 3: Which should you buy?
Choose AirPods 4 with ANC for an open fit
AirPods 4 with ANC are the option to consider if you do not want silicone tips but still want ANC. Apple lists up to 4 hours of listening on one charge with ANC enabled. They may suit commuters or office users who want an open-fit design, but the open fit will not feel or isolate like an in-ear seal.

Choose AirPods Pro 3 for a sealed in-ear fit
Pro 3 use in-ear tips and are the better starting point if you want that seal, along with ANC and the model’s listed hearing and heart-rate features. Apple lists up to 8 hours per charge with ANC enabled. Its comparison page also claims up to four times more ANC than the original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with ANC, measured under IEC 60268-24. That is Apple’s claim against those named baselines, not a promise that every listener will perceive four times the noise reduction.

When are AirPods Max 2 the better choice?
Max 2 are over-ear headphones, not a larger version of the Pro earbuds. Consider them if you specifically want earcups and a headband. Apple lists up to 20 hours of listening with ANC enabled and claims up to 1.5 times more ANC than the previous generation, under IEC 60268-24. What features and compatibility should you check?
Apple lists the H2 chip in AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, Pro 3, Pro 2 and Max 2. That does not mean every feature is available in every situation. Apple’s comparison notes that functions such as Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness depend on model, current firmware and a compatible device and operating system. Hearing test and hearing aid features also have age, device, language and regional limits.

Apple describes the Hearing Aid feature as intended for people with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Hearing Protection is not suitable for some extremely loud impulse sounds, sustained sound above 110 dBA, or every workplace. Do not use AirPods hearing features as a substitute for required occupational hearing protection.
AirPods can pair with non-Apple devices over Bluetooth, but Apple-specific controls and advanced features may be limited or unavailable. Confirm the precise model, device, OS version, firmware and regional availability for the feature you plan to use before purchase; Apple’s comparison page includes model-specific qualifications.

Are AirPods water-resistant?
Apple lists IP57 for Pro 3, IP54 for Pro 2 and AirPods 4 variants, and IPX4 for AirPods 3. These ratings are not interchangeable and do not make the earbuds waterproof. Apple cautions that resistance can decline over time, that the products are intended for non-water sports and exercise, and that wet devices should not be charged. Check the rating for the exact model rather than applying one generation’s rating to another.

Prices and availability depend on country and date. Apple’s comparison page is localized to Slovenia, while the lineup shown on Apple pages can differ by market; for example, Apple India search results include AirPods 5 and a wireless-charging-case variant. Check your local Apple Store for the models currently sold and compare current local prices before choosing. A model’s appearance on a comparison page does not by itself mean it is still available for purchase.

Older models such as Pro 2 may still appear in comparisons or retailer listings, but their presence does not make them equivalent to current models. If considering a previous generation, verify its exact features, condition, warranty and price against the current alternative in your market. How to make the final choice
- Pick the form factor. Open-fit: AirPods 4 with ANC. In-ear tips: Pro 3. Over-ear: Max 2.
- Decide how much noise control and battery time matter. Compare Apple’s mode-specific single-charge maxima, bearing in mind they are conditional manufacturer figures.
- Check the feature you actually need. Confirm OS, device, firmware, language and region requirements, especially for hearing and adaptive features.
- Verify local price and stock. Compare the exact model and included case or charging configuration at the time you plan to buy.
- Prioritize comfort in your own ears. If you can, try the design; no specification can tell you how a particular fit will feel.
Environmental information for AirPods Pro 3
Apple’s September 9, 2025 environmental report gives an estimated footprint of 13 kg CO2e for the assessed US configuration of Pro 3. Apple also reports 40% recycled content and 40% of manufacturing electricity sourced from renewable energy projects for the product. These are manufacturer-reported figures; the footprint is a modeled life-cycle estimate based partly on industry averages and assumptions, not a universal measurement for every configuration or use.
