United led on median download speed, while airBaltic led on consistency in Ookla Speedtest Intelligence results for the second half of 2025, as summarized by Android Authority. Those are different measures, not a guarantee for any flight: the aircraft’s Wi-Fi provider, route, installation status, and access rules all affect what a passenger gets.
Which airline has the fastest in-flight Wi-Fi?
In the second-half 2025 comparison, United had the highest reported median download speed among the airlines covered. But United’s results varied substantially by onboard network provider: its median was 319.99 Mbps on Starlink, 56.48 Mbps on Intelsat, and 15.34 Mbps on Inmarsat. These are period-specific medians reported in an Android Authority summary of Ookla Speedtest Intelligence data, not current fleet-wide figures or predicted speeds for a particular flight. Android Authority’s summary of Ookla’s comparison shows why the airline name alone does not tell the whole story.
The same summary reported median Starlink speeds above 300 Mbps for Emirates, airBaltic, and Alaska Airlines, and 281.56 Mbps for Air France. Treat these as historical measurement-period results, not a live ranking or promise that every aircraft operated by those airlines has Starlink.
Which airline has the most consistent Wi-Fi?
airBaltic ranked first for consistency in the same second-half 2025 comparison. The summary also reported that airBaltic, WestJet, Hawaiian Airlines, and Air France reached at least 25 Mbps download in 90% of tests. That consistency measure answers a different question from the highest median: it indicates how often tests reached a useful threshold, rather than identifying the single highest typical speed.

The accessible comparison is a summary of Ookla’s results rather than the original report, so the rankings should be understood as attributed secondhand results for that measurement period—not a continuously updated league table. The Benton Institute’s linked Ookla summary provides additional context on the comparison.
Why the Wi-Fi provider and aircraft matter
Airline Wi-Fi is installed and delivered by aircraft and service provider, so two flights on the same airline can perform differently. United’s reported medians across Starlink, Intelsat, and Inmarsat illustrate the scale of that variation. A ranking by airline can therefore conceal differences between aircraft in the same fleet.

Coverage can also be incomplete while an airline is retrofitting its planes. Alaska’s tracker reported that 38% of its aircraft were equipped with Starlink as of September 25, 2026; it lists aircraft types and installation status and says it is refreshed monthly. Alaska and Hawaiian say Wi-Fi is complimentary for Atmos Rewards members on Starlink-equipped aircraft, but Hawaiian’s neighbor-island flights do not have onboard Wi-Fi. Check the specific itinerary and aircraft rather than assuming service from the airline name. Alaska’s Wi-Fi and fleet tracker and its Alaska and Hawaiian access FAQ describe current availability and eligibility.

How to choose a flight when Wi-Fi matters
- Check the route and flight date. Look for the airline’s current Wi-Fi or aircraft information, then verify whether installation applies to the plane on your itinerary. Rollouts can leave only part of a fleet equipped.
- Choose the metric that matches your task. Median download speed is useful for typical throughput; consistency indicates how often tests reached a stated threshold. For real-time work, also check latency and whether the airline permits your intended applications.
- Verify the access terms. “Complimentary” may depend on an airline account or loyalty membership. Some services also prohibit activities such as calls or livestreaming.
- Compare like with like. Passenger speed-test medians, consistency rates, fleet coverage, and an airline’s combined aircraft-bandwidth claim are not interchangeable measures.
