For a 3D-printed part that may sit in direct sun inside a parked car, ASA is the most practical default among the materials compared here. Prusament ASA has a higher reported heat-deflection temperature (HDT) than Prusament PETG and is described by its manufacturer as UV stable. Prusament PC Blend has higher HDT figures still, but it is harder to print successfully. These are product-specific test results—not guarantees that a finished print will keep its shape in every vehicle.
How hot can a parked car get?
A car interior can become hot enough to challenge common 3D-printing plastics, especially when a part is in direct sunlight. An NC State dissertation reviewing earlier studies reports that, after one hour in direct sun on a day at least 95°F (35°C), average cabin air reached 116°F (47°C) and the dashboard averaged 157°F (69°C). These are reported averages under those conditions, not universal maximum temperatures. The dashboard surface can be much hotter than the cabin air, so a part’s location matters.
The temperature a printed object experiences also depends on shade, exposure time, its position in the cabin, and whether it is pressed against a hot surface. The 69°C dashboard average is a useful comparison point, not a prediction for every car or a pass/fail threshold for a print.
How to compare heat resistance figures
Heat-deflection temperature (HDT) is measured under a specified test method and load. It is not a safe-use temperature, melting point, or promise that a printed part will retain its shape in a car. A part may deform below its reported HDT depending on its design, print orientation, sustained load, print settings, and the conditions around it. Compare figures only when the test method and load are clear, and treat the results as specific to the named filament formulation.

- 【PLA-Like Easy Printing】- Get enhanced thermal performance without giving up the convenience of PLA. HT-PLA prints at 210–230°C with a 25–60°C heated bed and cooling fan ON, with no enclosed chamber required, making it compatible with a wide range of FDM 3D printers.
- 【Heat Resistant after Annealing】- If need greater thermal performance, annealing can further improve the heat resistance of HT-PLA. After annealing, the material reaches a heat deflection temperature of approximately 107°C at 0.45 MPa for functional parts used in warmer environments.
- 【High Speed up to 350mm/s】- Polymaker HT-PLA supports printing speeds up to 300mm/s on compatible printers while maintaining reliable extrusion and dimensional consistency. A practical choice for prototypes, functional parts and repeatable everyday printing.
- 【Recommendation】- No hardened nozzle or enclosed chamber is required. If the filament absorbs moisture, dry at 60°C for approximately 6 hours before printing.
The values below are from Prusament technical datasheets, version 1.1, last updated February 16, 2022. All are reported under ISO 75; the two loads produce different results for some materials.
| Material | HDT at 0.45 MPa | HDT at 1.80 MPa | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prusament ASA | 93°C | 86°C | Manufacturer describes it as UV stable; large prints can warp. |
| Prusament PETG | 68°C | 68°C | Its reported HDT is close to the cited sunlit-dashboard average. |
| Prusament PC Blend | 113°C | 93°C | Higher printing difficulty, high warping risk, and demanding printer temperatures. |
| PLA | Not stated in the cited product-specific data | Not stated in the cited product-specific data | Check the datasheet for the exact PLA spool; a universal figure is not established here. |
Which filament should you choose?
ASA: the practical choice for a sunlit interior part
Among these cited options, ASA is the best practical default for a part that may be exposed to direct sun. Prusament reports HDT values of 93°C at 0.45 MPa and 86°C at 1.80 MPa, and its product information describes ASA as UV stable. Prusa Research calls it “a true successor to ABS” and says it is UV stable and suffers less from shrinking than ABS; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent comparative finding.

- 【High Heat Stability】- Polymaker HT-PLA-GF is engineered for functional prints that need to maintain their shape in high-temperature environments. After annealing, it provides enhanced heat resistance for demanding applications such as tool holders, brackets, fixtures, housings and functional prototypes.
- 【12% Glass Fiber Reinforced】- Reinforced with 12% glass fiber, HT-PLA-GF delivers higher stiffness and strength than standard HT-PLA for demanding functional parts. The glass fiber reinforcement also helps improve dimensional stability and gives printed parts a distinctive textured finish.
- 【Heat Resistant & Easy to Print】- Get high thermal performance without the printing complexity typically associated with ABS. HT-PLA-GF prints at 210–230°C with a 25–60°C heated bed and does not require an enclosed chamber, making it easier to print on a wide range of FDM 3D printers.
- 【High Speed up to 350mm/s】- Designed for printing speeds up to 350mm/s on compatible printers, HT-PLA-GF combines high-speed capability with low shrinkage and reliable dimensional stability. Suitable for jigs, fixtures, mechanical parts, tool organizers and repeatable functional prints.
- 【Hardened Nozzle Recommended】- Glass fiber is abrasive, a hardened steel or other wear-resistant nozzle is recommended. For higher heat resistance, anneal at 80–100°C for 20–30 minutes; 100°C for 30 minutes is recommended.
ASA is not effortless: large prints can warp, and the material contains styrene. Follow the filament maker’s ventilation and safety documentation; Prusa’s product page notes odor during printing. Suitable printer capability, settings, and part design still matter.
PC Blend: higher reported HDT, harder printing
Prusament PC Blend has the highest reported HDT in this comparison: 113°C at 0.45 MPa and 93°C at 1.80 MPa. Prusament recommends a 275 ± 10°C nozzle and 110 ± 10°C bed, and identifies the material as difficult to print with high warping risk; its product guidance also calls for a separating agent. It is an option for experienced users with a printer and process that can handle those requirements, rather than an automatic upgrade for every car part.

PETG: avoid for loaded dashboard parts in direct sun
Prusament PETG’s reported HDT is 68°C at both listed loads, close to the 69°C average sunlit-dashboard surface temperature reported in the cited literature review. That comparison provides little assurance for a loaded dashboard part. A shaded, low-load part may face different conditions, but the available figures do not establish that it will perform reliably there.
PLA: check the exact spool’s datasheet
The product-specific PLA data needed for a precise comparison is not established here. PLA formulations vary, so do not rely on a generic figure to decide whether a particular print is suitable for a parked car. Find the spool manufacturer’s technical datasheet and compare its HDT test method and load with the expected conditions.

Match the material to the part’s location and job
- Dashboard or windshield sun: ASA is the most practical default among these cited choices. Account for direct surface heating and the part’s sustained load.
- Shaded cabin: Conditions may be less demanding than on a sunlit dashboard, but the available data do not guarantee performance for a particular PETG or PLA part.
- High-load or high-consequence use: Do not use this comparison to qualify parts involved in restraint, steering, braking, structural support, or other safety-critical vehicle functions. Heat resistance figures alone do not validate automotive safety.
Whatever the material, the printed part’s geometry, orientation, layer bonding, print settings, and duration under load affect whether it keeps its shape. The cited HDT figures cannot substitute for evaluating the actual design and conditions.
