League of Legends lore is the story of Runeterra and the champions who come from its regions; it is not a literal record of every match. In the game’s standard match, two teams of five champions try to destroy the opposing team’s Nexus. To understand who those champions are, where they come from, and why they clash, start with Runeterra’s regions, then follow a character or conflict that interests you.
You do not need to begin with a mandatory first chapter or play the game to explore its stories. A short regional overview is enough to choose a starting point; Riot’s lore index then offers character stories and comics, while books provide optional, more focused ways into the setting.
What is Runeterra?
Runeterra is the fictional world that organizes League of Legends’ character stories. Its regions give readers a useful map of different societies, histories, and conflicts. A champion’s region can explain their background, but it does not mean every story is isolated there: champions and events connect across regional boundaries.

Riot’s champion directory lists over 170 champions, a figure verified on its page in 2026. That gives a sense of the setting’s breadth, not a promise that a beginner must learn every character before reading. Pick a place, a character, or a conflict and let that choice narrow the field.
Which Runeterra regions should a beginner know?
Think of regions as entry points rather than chapters in a required reading order. Riot’s region guide, dated August 31, 2021, offers concise introductions; it is useful for orientation, not a precise chronology or an exhaustive map of every place in the fiction. The guide is part of the Legends of Runeterra support site, so its regional descriptions should not be mistaken for a claim that gameplay categories contain the whole world.
- Demacia: A kingdom associated with duty, honor, and justice. Riot’s guide sums up its ideals as “Justice. Honor. Duty.”
- Freljord: A northern wilderness shaped by harsh conditions and civil conflict.
- Ionia: A land concerned with balance between spiritual and physical worlds, whose history was disrupted by Noxus’s invasion.
- Noxus: An expansionist empire; its ambitions provide a direct way to see how one region’s actions affect another.
- Piltover and Zaun: Connected places with sharply different conditions. Piltover is associated with prosperous invention and industry; Zaun lies beneath it and has a different character and environment.
- Bilgewater: A dangerous port city.
- Shurima: A region marked by the legacy of a fallen empire.
- Targon: A setting associated with celestial mysteries.
- Bandle City: A mysterious home associated with yordles.
- The Shadow Isles: A region defined by the consequences of a catastrophe and the threat of the Black Mist.
These short descriptions are a compass, not a complete account of each place or a sequence of events. Riot’s region guide is a practical first stop if you want to browse the names and broad themes before choosing a story.

What are two easy story threads to follow?
Noxus and Ionia offer a straightforward example of regional conflict: an expansionist power invades a region with a different culture and relationship to the spiritual world. The point is not that every champion from either place has the same view; it is that the invasion gives character stories a shared historical pressure.

Piltover and Zaun offer another route. Their close physical relationship contrasts with their sharply different conditions, which makes them a useful setting for stories about people living on opposite sides of that divide. Riot’s Arcane-related Council Archives article identifies Jayce, Vi, Caitlyn, and Jinx as character trails into the setting. The article documents a time-limited client experience from 2021, so treat it as historical context rather than an assurance that those archives can still be played in the client.
Both threads are useful because they let a beginner follow an idea as well as a person: invasion and its consequences, or the relationship between connected communities. You can start with whichever question interests you, then use the lore index to find the relevant character stories and comics.
What happened to the Shadow Isles?
The Shadow Isles were once the Blessed Isles. Riot’s regional account says they were transformed after a grieving king tried to defy death; the Black Mist is central to the danger the region presents in the present-day setting. This origin connects a personal tragedy to a lasting change in the world, making the Isles a useful example of how League lore can look backward to explain a region’s current condition.

Riot’s novel Ruination, by Anthony Reynolds, follows Kalista as she tries to help Viego after Isolde is poisoned and he seeks the Blessed Isles. Riot’s FAQ places the novel roughly a millennium before the later events of Sentinels of Light and The Ruined King. That comparison is a useful guide to the novel’s historical placement, not a required reading order for all stories about the Isles.

If you want a focused prose story rather than a broad tour of the world, Ruination is an optional route into this history. Riot describes a hardcover edition, but that does not establish current retailer stock or price.
Where should I start reading League of Legends lore?
A practical beginner path is to get a small amount of context, choose one point of interest, and follow it through Riot’s story index. This is an editorial recommendation, not an official Riot chronology.
- Read a few regional descriptions. Use Riot’s region guide to orient yourself. Do not try to memorize every region or infer a precise timeline from the descriptions.
- Choose a champion or conflict. Start with a character you already recognize, or choose a question such as what the Noxus–Ionia conflict means or how Piltover and Zaun are connected.
- Open the lore index. Riot’s lore page points readers toward champion stories, comics, and other material from Runeterra. Follow the links that match your chosen character or place instead of treating the index as a sequential reading list.
- Choose a format if you want more. Keep reading free online entries, explore an illustrated world overview, or try a focused novel. You can stop at any point; none is a prerequisite for understanding every other story.
The formats serve different purposes. Riot describes Realms of Runeterra as a collectible narrative companion covering eleven of Runeterra’s regions, with illustrations and maps. The eleven-region figure describes the book’s coverage; it does not mean the fictional world has exactly eleven regions. It is an optional illustrated overview, not a substitute for every later character story. Ruination is narrower: a prose novel centered on Kalista, Viego, and the history behind the Shadow Isles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA physical card game can also be a way to encounter familiar champions, but it is not a lore guide. Riot describes Riftbound: Proving Grounds as an introductory physical card-game set; choose it for play, not as a required text for understanding Runeterra.

Is Arcane part of League of Legends lore?
Arcane is connected to League of Legends through its Piltover-and-Zaun setting and familiar characters, but the official materials cited here do not establish a current, precise rule for reconciling every detail of the series with every older account. It is fair to use the series as an entry point into those places and character names; it is not safe to assume that every older biography, cinematic, game event, and series plot detail fits one settled chronology.
When accounts appear to conflict, keep track of which dated story or source you are reading and avoid treating one detail as a universal answer unless Riot has stated that relationship explicitly. The 2021 Council Archives article is an example of a dated Arcane-related resource, not proof that its time-limited client feature remains available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do I need to play League of Legends to understand the story?
No. The match objective and the fictional setting answer different questions: the game guide explains how a match works, while Riot’s lore index provides stories and comics. A reader can begin with a region description and follow written material without treating match results as events in the lore.
Playing can make champion names familiar, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding a chosen story. If a story introduces a character or place you do not know, use the region guide or lore index as a reference rather than trying to learn the full roster first.

How should beginners think about League lore canon?
Use individual stories as dated sources rather than assuming that every League-related release forms a single, fully reconciled timeline. The official materials available for these entry points support a connection between Arcane-related characters and Piltover and Zaun, but do not settle every relationship between newer and older accounts.
That uncertainty does not make the setting impossible to follow. It means a beginner can enjoy a particular story on its own terms while noting its source and context. Riot’s region overview can orient you geographically; the lore index helps you find the story itself. Neither should be treated as a universal timeline unless it explicitly provides one.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many champions are in League of Legends?
Riot’s champion directory showed over 170 champions when checked in 2026. That is a snapshot of the directory at verification time, not a publication date or a count that tells you how many characters you need to know to begin reading.
Is Realms of Runeterra required reading?
No. Riot presents it as a collectible companion with regional narratives, illustrations, and maps, so it suits readers who want a visual world overview. It is optional, and its stated coverage of eleven regions does not establish the total number of places in Runeterra.
What order should I read Ruination and The Ruined King in?
Riot’s FAQ places the novel Ruination roughly 1,000 years before the events of The Ruined King and Sentinels of Light. That is a setting comparison, not an official recommendation that readers follow a particular release or reading order.
Are the Council Archives still playable in the League client?
The cited Council Archives article describes a time-limited client experience from 2021. Its existence as an article is useful historical context, but it does not confirm that the interactive feature remains available.
