DC presents it as a definitive origin story and a starting point for new readers, so you can meet Bruce Wayne and Gotham without first learning a long history of the character.
Which Batman comic should you read first?
Pick by the kind of story you want, not by trying to follow every Batman comic in chronological order. Year One is the clearest entry point; The Long Halloween is a crime mystery set early in Batman’s career; and The Dark Knight Returns is a standalone story about an older Batman.
| Comic | Story premise | Best fit | How it connects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batman: Year One | Batman’s origin | You want a direct introduction to the character | DC’s new-reader collection identifies it as a starting point (DC Universe Infinite, “Batman Stories for New Comic Readers”). |
| Batman: The Long Halloween | An early-career crime mystery | You would rather follow a mystery than begin with an origin | DC describes it as a spiritual sequel to Year One (DC, “How to Start Reading Batman Comics,” January 21, 2026). |
| Batman: The Dark Knight Returns | An older Batman in a standalone future story | You want a self-contained take on Batman later in life | DC calls it a standalone graphic novel outside official continuity (DC, “DC Comics 101: Discovering The Dark Knight Returns,” August 20, 2015). |
Start with Batman: Year One for the origin
Year One is the strongest first pick if you are curious about how Batman begins. DC describes the collection as the definitive Dark Knight origin and includes it among its stories for new readers. That makes it a practical entry point rather than an assignment to catch up on an ongoing series.
Choose it if you want the origin-focused route. If you already know the basic premise and would rather jump into a crime story, you can start with The Long Halloween instead.

Choose The Long Halloween for an early-career mystery
Batman: The Long Halloween is an early-career crime mystery. DC calls it a classic tale set in Batman’s early days and a “spiritual sequel” to Year One. Reading Year One first gives you a natural connection between the books, but it is a suggested path—not a prerequisite for every Batman story.
- Read Batman: Year One if you want the origin first.
- Continue with Batman: The Long Halloween if its crime-mystery premise appeals to you.
Pick The Dark Knight Returns for a standalone older-Batman story
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns offers a different entry point: its Batman is older, and the story stands apart from official continuity. DC describes it as a “true standalone graphic novel.” You do not need to read Year One or The Long Halloween first, but it is not an origin story or the next chapter in that early-career path.

How to find a copy
Look for collected Batman graphic novels at a bookstore or library; DC notes that both may have dedicated graphic-novel sections. Digital readers can also browse DC Universe Infinite’s collection of Batman stories for new comic readers. Check the current listing for the edition and access options available to you; prices, regional availability, catalogue contents, and subscription terms are not established here.
