Where is File in New Outlook?
- Open New Outlook for Windows.
- Look at the ribbon across the top of the window.
- Select File, immediately to the right of Home.
The File tab provides access to commands including Print and Manage accounts. It is not the primary location for every setting: use the Settings gear for general customization, and check View for some commonly used controls. Microsoft’s New Outlook feature notes describe the File tab and its commands.
File is missing: enable Custom folder order
The File tab requires Custom folder order to be selected. To change the setting:
- Select View on the ribbon.
- Select Folder pane.
- Select Sort folders.
- Choose Custom folder order.
Check the ribbon again after changing the folder-order option. If File still does not appear, confirm that you are using New Outlook rather than Classic Outlook. Microsoft documents the folder-order requirement.

How to tell whether you have New Outlook or Classic Outlook
The two Windows applications have different menus. Use this comparison to identify which one is open:

In New Outlook, select the gear button, then go to General → About Outlook to see the installed version. In Classic Outlook, version and configuration information is exposed through File. See Microsoft’s guide to identifying your Outlook version.
Do not use File → Options in New Outlook
Older Outlook guides may direct you to select File → Options. That is the Classic Outlook route, not the current settings path for New Outlook.

For New Outlook, use the appropriate route:

The privacy path is easy to confuse with the traditional Office account-privacy interface. File → Account → Manage Settings is not the New Outlook privacy route. What if Outlook opens the wrong version?
Windows may contain both applications. Classic Outlook appears in the Start menu as Outlook (classic), while New Outlook has its own app entry. Microsoft warns that launching Classic Outlook through the New Outlook app can redirect you back to New Outlook when the redirect toggle is enabled.
If you need Classic Outlook, launch Outlook (classic) directly from the Windows Start menu. The command Outlook.exe /profiles opens the Classic Outlook profile picker; it is not a New Outlook command. See Microsoft’s guidance on switching out of New Outlook and editing an Outlook profile.

If the “Try the new Outlook” switch is missing
The Try the new Outlook toggle may be unavailable because the account type is unsupported or an administrator has blocked it. New Outlook may still be available through the Microsoft Store or preinstalled on newer Windows 11 devices. On a managed work computer, an administrator may need to approve or install it.

When you should stay with Classic Outlook
Finding the File tab does not mean every Classic Outlook workflow is available in New Outlook. Microsoft documents limited support for public folders and recommends continuing to use Classic Outlook if you regularly need to create, modify, or delete them. See Microsoft’s New Outlook guidance.

Use Classic Outlook when a required feature is unavailable in New Outlook. Instructions for File → Options, Outlook profiles, or other backstage commands generally apply to Classic Outlook rather than New Outlook.
Quick fix checklist
- Check whether the app has the Settings gear in the upper-right corner.
- If it is New Outlook, select View → Folder pane → Sort folders → Custom folder order.
- Look for File immediately next to Home.
- Use the gear for account and general settings, not File → Options.
- For privacy, select View → View settings → General → Privacy and data → Privacy settings.
- If the screen still does not match, check whether you launched Outlook (classic) or whether your organization controls the installation.

Does New Outlook have a File tab?
Yes. Microsoft added the File tab to New Outlook for Windows in November 2025. It appears next to Home when the folder pane uses Custom folder order.

Where are Outlook options in New Outlook?
Use the Settings gear in the upper-right corner. For view-specific options, use View → View settings. File → Options is the Classic Outlook route.
How do I manage accounts in New Outlook?
Select Settings → Accounts → Your accounts. To add another account, select Settings → Accounts → Add account.
How do I open privacy settings in New Outlook?
Select View → View settings → General → Privacy and data → Privacy settings.
Can I use Outlook.exe /profiles to open New Outlook profiles?
No. Outlook.exe /profiles is a Classic Outlook/Desktop Outlook command. It is not a New Outlook File-menu or profile command.
