For U.S.-based HIV research, start with Grants.gov and NIH’s funding search tools, then use specialist directories such as HIVSource and funder pages such as amfAR to find additional leads. Eligibility and deadlines are set by each opportunity, so confirm every lead against the sponsor’s current notice before building an application.
Where to search for HIV research funding
Federal opportunities: Grants.gov and NIH
Grants.gov is the federal starting point for finding and applying for discretionary funding. NIH says its funding notices are posted there and provides NIH-specific search tools and filters to narrow opportunities by institute, funding mechanism, topic, and notice. NIH also publishes generic parent announcements for investigator-initiated applications. See NIH’s funding search guide.
Federal support can take the form of grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements. HIV.gov identifies a range of potentially eligible applicants—including public agencies, Tribes, community organizations, academic medical centers, and educational organizations—but its guide covers HIV programs broadly, not research alone. Read the individual notice to verify that it funds your proposed research activity and that your organization may apply. HIV.gov’s federal funding guide calls Grants.gov the primary source for finding and applying for federal opportunities.
Specialist directory: HIVSource
HIVSource’s funding directory, provided in collaboration with NIH’s Office of AIDS Research, gathers links to HIV-related funding from organizations including NIH’s Office of Extramural Research, CFAR programs, amfAR, ViiV Healthcare, and Unitaid. Treat it as a discovery index rather than an authoritative listing of currently open awards: follow each entry to the funder’s own page to check eligibility, geography, deadlines, and application instructions.

Nonprofit funder: amfAR
amfAR solicits applications for targeted research through formal requests for proposals and says submissions receive internal and external peer review. Its research-grants page reported more than 3,900 grants awarded to research teams worldwide when accessed October 7, 2026; that cumulative figure does not indicate the amount currently available or an applicant’s likelihood of success. Review amfAR’s research-grants page for current solicitations.
amfAR describes three mechanisms with different audiences and access:
- Mathilde Krim Fellowships in Biomedical Research: for postdoctoral researchers.
- Target Grants: investigator-initiated research. Applicants need a research or clinical doctoral degree and affiliation with an eligible nonprofit research institution. amfAR lists awards of up to $480,000 over two years; check the current call for its terms and application requirements.
- Horizon Grants: collaborative awards available by invitation only, not an open application route.
These distinctions are described on amfAR’s types-of-grants page. The research-grants page listed a 2026 Cancer Immunology Target Grant solicitation with a full-application deadline of August 24, 2026, and indicated that submissions were closed when checked October 7, 2026. That past deadline is not actionable; verify the status and dates of any current call directly with amfAR.

Compare each lead against the actual notice, not just a directory summary. The key distinctions are who can apply, what work the funder supports, and how applications are accepted.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Rank #4
- Applicant and career stage: Check whether the call accepts your applicant type, requires a particular degree or career stage, and permits your institution to serve as the applicant.
- Scope and fit: Match your research question, population, methods, stage of work, and deliverable to the sponsor’s stated priorities. A broad HIV program notice may not fund research.
- Geography and institution: Confirm country or regional restrictions and eligible institution types.
- Funding form and terms: Identify whether the support is a grant, contract, cooperative agreement, fellowship, or collaborative award. Review award limits and direct- and indirect-cost rules in the current notice.
- Access and timing: Determine whether the opportunity is open competition, investigator-initiated, invitation-only, currently open, or closed. Use the sponsor’s current deadline rather than an old directory entry.
A practical search workflow
- Summarize the project. Write a short project description and identify its population, question, methods, stage, and expected deliverable.
- Search federal sources. Search Grants.gov for relevant terms and mechanisms, then narrow results using NIH’s funding tools if the project fits NIH programs. Read the complete notice.
- Look for specialist leads. Search HIVSource, then open the originating funder’s official page for every promising listing.
- Screen the notice. Check applicant type, institution, geography, career stage, scope, award amount, cost rules, and deadline before investing time in an application.
- Check amfAR’s mechanism. Decide whether your career stage and project fit a fellowship or Target Grant; do not treat invitation-only Horizon Grants as an open-call opportunity. Consult the current RFP.
- Resolve uncertainties early. Ask the sponsor or your institutional research office when eligibility, fit, or application requirements are unclear.
Geographic scope and what to expect
This is a U.S.-weighted starting map, not a complete worldwide directory. The listed sources do not establish every country’s research council, private foundation, industry-sponsored award, or local eligibility rules. Applicants outside the United States should use these links as possible leads, then check national and regional funders and confirm whether each sponsor accepts applications from their location.
