If you need Java on Windows 11 or Windows 10, download it from Oracle’s Java Downloads page. For current releases, choose the Windows x64 JDK—not a separately named “Java 64-bit JRE.” Oracle’s current catalog lists JDK 26, JDK 25, and JDK 21 for 64-bit Windows, while separate JRE downloads are currently listed only for Java 8.
This distinction matters because many older download guides still point readers toward 32-bit and 64-bit JRE installers for Java 17, 21, or newer. Those package choices do not match Oracle’s current download page.
Which Java download should you choose?
Oracle currently lists JDK 26 as the latest Java SE release, JDK 25 as the latest Long-Term Support (LTS) release, and JDK 21 as the previous LTS release. The listed update versions are JDK 26.0.2, JDK 25.0.4, and JDK 21.0.12. Source: Oracle Java Downloads.

For ordinary Windows 11 and modern Windows 10 computers, choose x64. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 64-bit Java and usually supports 32-bit applications separately. A 32-bit Java runtime is needed only when the specific legacy program or plug-in requires a 32-bit JVM.

Download Java 64-bit for Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Open Oracle’s Java Downloads page.
- Find the required JDK section: JDK 26, JDK 25, JDK 21, or another version required by your software.
- Expand or select the Windows platform section.
- Choose one of the Windows x64 package types:
- x64 Installer — the normal interactive installer.
- x64 MSI Installer — useful for administration, deployment, and scripted installation.
- x64 Compressed Archive — a ZIP file for a portable or manually configured installation.
- Accept Oracle’s license terms if prompted, then click the download link.
- Compare the downloaded file size with the value shown on Oracle’s page. Oracle also provides checksum links beside the downloads if you need a stronger integrity check.
For the current JDK 26 Windows x64 release, the filenames are:
jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.exejdk-26_windows-x64_bin.msijdk-26_windows-x64_bin.zip
The equivalent JDK 25 and JDK 21 downloads use filenames such as jdk-25_windows-x64_bin.exe, jdk-25_windows-x64_bin.msi, jdk-21_windows-x64_bin.exe, and jdk-21_windows-x64_bin.msi.
Install the Java x64 EXE package
The EXE is the simplest choice for most people. Administrator privileges are required. Source: Oracle JDK installation guide.
- Open the downloaded file, for example
jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.exe. - Approve the Windows security prompt if it appears.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Keep the default installation folder unless you have a reason to change it.
- Finish the installation and close any old Command Prompt or PowerShell windows.
Oracle’s default path is normally similar to:
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-26
The exact folder can include the full update number, such as C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-26.0.1. Oracle also creates a helper path containing Java launchers:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath\java.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath\javaw.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath\javac.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath\jshell.exe
You can delete the downloaded installer afterward if you no longer need it.
Install Java silently from Command Prompt
For an unattended JDK 26 EXE installation, open an elevated Command Prompt, change to the folder containing the installer, and run:

jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.exe /s
Oracle states that all components are installed by default, so an ADDLOCAL option is not required. Source: Oracle JDK installation guide.
Install Java with the MSI package
The MSI package is more suitable for IT deployment or Windows Installer workflows. For JDK 26, download jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.msi, then run:
msiexec.exe /i jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.msi
For a silent installation:
msiexec.exe jdk-26_windows-x64_bin.msi /qn
To create an installation log:
msiexec.exe /i installer.msi /L C:\path\setup.log
Replace installer.msi with the actual filename and use a folder that already exists for the log path. Source: Oracle JDK installation guide.
Use the ZIP archive instead
The compressed archive is not an installer. Extract it to a folder such as:
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-26
It does not perform the installer’s registry or helper-path setup. To use it, either run executables directly from its bin folder:

or configure JAVA_HOME and Path manually.
Set JAVA_HOME and PATH correctly
If an application or development tool asks for JAVA_HOME, point it to the JDK’s root directory—not to bin.

Correct:
JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-26
Then add this to Path:
%JAVA_HOME%\bin
Incorrect:
JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-26\bin
To configure this through Windows, press Win + S, search for environment variables, select Edit the system environment variables, click Environment Variables, and add or edit JAVA_HOME under the appropriate user or system section. Edit Path and add %JAVA_HOME%\bin.
Open a new terminal after changing environment variables. Existing Command Prompt and PowerShell windows may still have the old environment.
Verify that Java is installed
Open a new Command Prompt and run:
where javajava -versionjavac -version
where java shows which Java launchers are found and which one appears first. java -version checks the runtime. javac -version confirms that the JDK compiler is available.
A successful java -version does not prove that a JDK is installed. You may be running a runtime-only installation, an older Java installation, or another vendor’s launcher. If where java lists an unexpected older directory first, that PATH entry takes precedence.
Where to download 32-bit Java for Windows
Oracle’s current download catalog lists Windows x86 installers only for JDK 8, not for JDK 11, 17, 21, 25, or 26. The current JDK 8 x86 files include:
jdk-8u501-windows-i586.exejdk-8u501-windows-i586.zip
Use an x86 package only when the software documentation specifically requires a 32-bit JVM. Installing 64-bit Java does not make a 32-bit-only application use a 64-bit JVM, and a 64-bit-only Java application cannot use a 32-bit JVM.

Java 8 JRE downloads
Oracle currently provides a separate Windows JRE download for Java 8. It does not list separate JRE downloads for Java 11, 17, 21, 25, or 26. The available Java 8 JRE files include:

For Java 11 and newer, Oracle’s standard downloads are JDK packages. The JDK includes the runtime plus development tools, so it can run Java applications and compile Java source code. The JRE is a runtime-only package. Source: Oracle Java Downloads.
Oracle licensing notes
Licensing depends on the Java release. Oracle lists JDK 26 and JDK 25 under the Oracle No-Fee Terms and Conditions (NFTC) for the stated update periods. Oracle says JDK 26 updates are covered under those terms until September 2026, while JDK 25 updates are covered until September 2028. Oracle lists JDK 21 updates under those terms until September 2026. Source: Oracle Java Downloads.
JDK 11 has different restrictions: Oracle states that its downloads may be used for development, personal use, or to run Oracle-licensed products. Other production or commercial use requires an Oracle Java SE Universal Subscription or another applicable Oracle license.

JDK 8 also uses different terms. Oracle states that its license changed in April 2019 and that current JDK 8 downloads use the Oracle Technology Network License Agreement for Oracle Java SE. Check the terms that apply to your version and use case, particularly for business deployments.

You can have multiple Java versions and architectures installed at the same time. The command java -version reports only the executable selected through PATH; it does not list every installed Java version. Use where java when troubleshooting a version conflict.
Stop Java applications and services before updating, overwriting, or replacing a JDK directory. A running Java process may keep files locked and cause the update to fail. Source: Oracle Java installation guide.
For JDK 26, Oracle documents a junction at:
C:\Program Files\Java\latest\jdk-26
This points to the latest installed JDK 26 update. Oracle removes the junction when the last JDK 26 installation is uninstalled.

Common download and installation mistakes
- Choosing x86 on a modern PC: use x64 unless the target application specifically requires 32-bit Java.
- Searching for “JRE 64-bit Java 21”: Oracle’s current catalog provides newer releases as JDK packages rather than separate JRE downloads.
- Using the JDK’s folder as JAVA_HOME with
binappended: JAVA_HOME should end at the JDK root. - Testing in an old terminal: close and reopen Command Prompt or PowerShell after installation.
- Assuming Java is absent because PATH is wrong: test the installed executable directly from the JDK’s
binfolder. - Expecting a ZIP extraction to configure Windows: add its
bindirectory to PATH manually or use the EXE/MSI installer. - Updating while Java is running: stop applications and services first to avoid locked-file errors.

Is Java 64-bit available for Windows 11?
Yes. Oracle provides Windows x64 JDK downloads for JDK 26, JDK 25, JDK 21, and other supported releases. Choose the x64 Installer, x64 MSI Installer, or x64 Compressed Archive from Oracle’s Java Downloads page.
Should I download the JDK or JRE?
Download the JDK for current Java releases and whenever you need to compile Java code. It includes the runtime and the javac compiler. Oracle currently lists separate JRE downloads only for Java 8.
Can I download 32-bit Java 21, 25, or 26 from Oracle?
No. Oracle’s current page lists Windows x86 packages only for Java 8. For JDK 21, 25, or 26, the listed Windows package is x64.
How do I know whether Windows is 64-bit?
Open Settings, select System, select About, and check System type. A 64-bit operating system is normally shown as “64-bit operating system, x64-based processor.”

Run where java to see which executable is selected. An older Java directory or another vendor’s launcher may appear earlier in PATH. Update PATH, or open a new terminal after changing it.
What should JAVA_HOME contain?
It should contain the JDK root, for example C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-26. Do not include the final bin directory.
Is Oracle JDK free for commercial use?
The answer depends on the release, update period, and use. Oracle lists JDK 25 and JDK 26 under the No-Fee Terms and Conditions for their stated periods, while JDK 11 and current JDK 8 downloads have different licensing conditions. Review Oracle’s terms before business deployment.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers, download the Windows x64 JDK from Oracle. Choose JDK 25 for the current LTS release, JDK 26 for the newest release, or the exact version required by your application. Use the EXE for a normal installation, MSI for managed deployment, and ZIP only when you want to configure the JDK manually.
