Start with itch.io: its tags, demos, free games, bundles, featured listings, and game jams offer several ways to find indie games that may not appear in a major storefront’s main feed. For more leads, browse Game Jolt and IndieDB, then follow community recommendations and editorial lists. Before you recommend a title, check its platform, release status, current availability, and price on its game page.

Start with itch.io’s tags, demos, and game jams

itch.io describes itself as “a simple way to find and share indie games online for free.” Its homepage links to browsing, tags, game jams, developer logs, community pages, free games, demos, bundles, and price filters. Featured titles and fresh-game listings offer another route if you would rather browse than begin with a specific genre.

Browse by interest, then lower the cost of trying something new

  1. Choose a tag. Start with a genre, mood, or format to narrow the catalog to the kind of game you want.
  2. Try a demo or free game. These listings can help you sample unfamiliar work before deciding whether to pay.
  3. Check bundles. If several titles catch your eye, see whether a bundle offers a convenient way to explore them together.
  4. Browse game jams for experiments. Jams can surface unusual concepts and short projects. A jam listing is a discovery lead, not evidence that a game is a finished or supported commercial release; check the individual page.

Use Game Jolt and IndieDB as additional leads

Game Jolt is described as a game marketplace with community tools, while IndieDB is a directory for long-tail browsing. They can broaden your search beyond a major storefront, but the available descriptions do not establish that either is superior or comprehensive. Explore their current catalogs and community features, and follow a specific game page rather than assuming a listing guarantees active development or availability.

Find games through people and editorial curation

Recommendation threads, curator lists, newsletters, video channels, and specialist editorial roundups can point you toward games and creators that popular feeds may overlook. Community discussions include players asking where others discover indie games, with replies mentioning itch.io and Steam Next Fest. Treat those replies as individual recommendations, not a consensus or proof of a game’s quality. Editorial picks offer context about why a title might suit you, while reflecting the curator’s taste.

Check a game’s current details before sharing it

Listings, featured titles, tags, jam activity, prices, and availability can change. Confirm the supported platform, release status, and current purchase or download destination on the specific game page before recommending it. On itch.io, creator-set open revenue sharing and pay-what-you-want pricing can allow free games with optional support, as described in its pricing documentation; check the live listing for the terms of an individual title.

itch.io also has an official Partner & Affiliate program. Its program page says game-related publishers, including reviewers, video creators, writers, streamers, and zine makers, may apply for affiliate codes that attribute purchases. If you use an affiliate link, disclose that relationship and place it beside the specific game or collection it concerns; the program description does not establish a commission amount.
