In Windows 11, the Start menu opens from the Windows logo button on the taskbar. By default, the taskbar is along the bottom of the screen and its icons—including Start—are centered. If you are used to Windows 10, do not look only in the lower-left corner: Windows 11 normally places Start near the bottom center.
You can open it with a mouse, keyboard, or touchscreen. The button may appear on the left if taskbar alignment has been changed, and it may be temporarily hidden if the taskbar uses auto-hide.
How to open Start in Windows 11
| Method | What to do |
|---|---|
| Mouse | Select the Windows logo on the taskbar. |
| Keyboard | Press the Windows logo key. |
| Alternative keyboard shortcut | Press Ctrl+Esc. |
| Touchscreen | Tap the Windows logo, or swipe up from the bottom of the screen. |
Pressing the Windows logo key while Start is open closes the menu again. The same key also opens Start when focus is in another application.
What the Windows 11 Start menu contains
The Start menu is more than an app list. Depending on your Windows version, account, and settings, it normally includes:

- Your account: Account, lock, and sign-out options.

Windows 11 does not use the Windows 10 Start menu’s large tile layout as its main interface. Its primary app area is a grid of pinned applications, followed by the All apps and Recommended sections.
Find an app, file, or setting from Start
- Open Start by selecting the Windows logo or pressing Windows.
- Start typing the name of the app, file, setting, or search phrase. You do not need to select the Search box first.
- Use the Up and Down arrow keys to move through the results.
- Press Enter to open the selected result.
Windows Search separates results into categories such as apps, documents, settings, and web results. For example, typing Bluetooth can surface the Bluetooth settings page, while typing Notepad can launch the application.
See every installed app
To browse applications rather than search for one:
- Open Start.
- Select All apps in the upper-right area of the menu.
- Scroll through the alphabetized list, or select a letter heading to jump to that part of the list.
You can also open the installed-apps shell directly:
- Press Windows+R to open Run.
- Enter shell:AppsFolder.
- Press Enter.
File Explorer opens the Apps folder. From there, you can launch installed applications and, where supported, create desktop shortcuts.

Pin or remove an app from Start
Pin an app
- Open Start and select Search, or begin typing the app’s name.
- Right-click the application in the results.
- Select Pin to Start.
The application is added to the Pinned section. You can usually drag pinned items to change their order.
Remove a pinned app
Right-click the app in the Pinned section and select Unpin from Start. This removes the shortcut from Start; it does not uninstall the application.
Move Start from the center to the left
Windows 11 lets you move the taskbar icons, including Start, to the left. This changes the button’s position, not the overall design or location of the Start menu.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Set Taskbar alignment to Left or Center.
With Left selected, Start appears in the lower-left area, similar to older Windows versions. Windows 11 does not provide a built-in setting to move the Start menu itself to the top or side of the screen.

Add useful folders beside the Power button
You can add shortcuts for folders such as Documents, Downloads, Pictures, and Network to the lower part of Start.
- Open Start.
- Right-click an empty area near the bottom of the menu and select Start settings. You can also open Settings > Personalization > Start.
- Select Folders.
- Turn on the folders you want to display.
Available choices can include Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, Network, and your personal folder. The shortcuts appear beside the Power button.
If you cannot see the Start button
The taskbar is hidden
Start is part of the taskbar. If the taskbar is set to auto-hide, move the pointer to the bottom edge of the screen—or to the edge where the taskbar is configured to appear. The taskbar should slide into view, allowing you to select Start.
Start is on the left
Check Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar alignment. The setting may be Left rather than Center. This is normal Windows 11 behavior, not a missing Start menu.

- Computer mouse for easily navigating a computer interface; click, scroll, and more
- USB-A wired connection; if existing device only supports USB-C, an additional adapter will be required
- High-definition (1000 dpi) optical tracking ensures responsive cursor control for precise tracking and easy text selection
- 3 buttons offer effortless fingertip control
- Plug-and-go ready for instant use
Clicking Start does nothing
Try pressing Windows or Ctrl+Esc. These shortcuts open Start without relying on a mouse click. If the keyboard shortcut works, the problem may be with the mouse, taskbar, or Windows shell rather than Start itself.
The Windows key does not work
Use Ctrl+Esc as the fallback. If the Windows key is unresponsive, check whether the keyboard has a gaming or Windows-key lock enabled. Manufacturer utilities, gaming software, keyboard remapping tools, and some external keyboards can disable or reassign the key.
