The Samsung ice-maker Test button does not have one universal location. On newer freezer-door models, look underneath the ice maker toward the left; on older freezer-door models, look on the front toward the left, sometimes behind a removable cover. For refrigerator-compartment and Side-by-Side configurations, Samsung’s guide places it on the right-hand side. You will usually need to remove the ice bucket to see it.
Use the button labeled Test, not repeated presses or force. The exact location and test timing depend on the refrigerator model, so check its manual if the layout differs.
Find the Test button for your ice-maker layout
Samsung describes different button positions for different ice-maker configurations. Remove the bucket or cover only as the model’s instructions allow; hold a removable bucket securely and lift or pull it gently. Samsung’s freezer-door ice-maker instructions and refrigerator-compartment and Side-by-Side guide show these variations:

These are guide-level layouts, not a guarantee for every model. If the button is not where expected, consult the manual matching your refrigerator’s model number rather than forcing parts or pressing unidentified controls.

How to run the test without causing a jam or overflow
- Expose the control safely. Remove the bucket or cover as directed for your model. Do not force a stuck bucket.
- Press and hold Test. Keep holding until the ice maker chimes; Samsung says this may take up to 10 seconds in its general troubleshooting guidance.
- Stop after the test starts. Do not repeatedly press Test when the tray is already filled with ice or water. Samsung warns that this can cause water to overflow or ice to jam.
- If there is no chime or movement, power-cycle once. Unplug the refrigerator or switch it off at the circuit breaker for two minutes, restore power, then try the test one more time. Samsung notes that movement without a chime may still mean the ice maker reset.
- Refit the bucket or cover completely. The bucket should click into place. On the freezer-door design in Samsung’s instructions, a rear gear handle may need a 90-degree turn if the bucket will not seat. Depending on model, poor seating can affect operation or trigger an Ice Off indication.
Samsung says one chime means the ice maker passed the test. Multiple chimes warrant contacting Samsung Support. If there is no response after the correct button press and the power cycle, Samsung’s guidance is to request service.
What the test does—and what the chimes do not prove
The Test button runs a diagnostic cycle; it does not guarantee that the cause of no ice has been fixed. Samsung describes a cycle of about six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment ice maker and about 30 seconds for a freezer-compartment maker. At the end, the water valve should hum and water should enter the ice maker.
Those timings and outcomes are Samsung US Support guidance; the cited support pages do not state a publication year. Actual operation varies by model. A successful test is not the same as restored normal ice production.

If the test runs but ice production does not return
Work through Samsung’s follow-up checks in order. Use the model’s controls and manual where panel labels differ.
Check freezer temperature and cooling
Samsung says the freezer must reach 0°F or below before the ice maker will produce ice, including on models with an ice maker in the refrigerator compartment. If the temperature is above that threshold, address cooling performance before treating the ice maker as the only possible cause.
Confirm the ice maker is enabled and the bucket is seated
Check the refrigerator’s control panel for an ice-maker-off setting. Icons and app controls vary; Family Hub and some SmartThings-capable models offer app settings. Also verify that the bucket is properly installed and that the door closes. If ice is already in the bucket but the dispenser will not dispense it, that is a dispenser problem rather than an ice-production problem.

Check water supply and pressure if the test does not bring in water
Check the household water supply and line. In the water-line troubleshooting circumstances it describes, Samsung specifies at least 20 psi. Its dispenser flow check is six ounces (three-quarters of a cup) in under 10 seconds; these are Samsung’s troubleshooting figures, not a universal measurement for every refrigerator setup.
Consider a restricted or expired filter on filtered models
On applicable models, a filter nearing the end of its life may reduce water pressure enough to affect ice production. Samsung rates its filters at 300 gallons, which it says represents about six months in an average household. Check the refrigerator model for exact filter compatibility and follow Samsung’s replacement guidance; do not assume every refrigerator uses the same filter.

Samsung warns: “Do not attempt to defrost your ice maker, as this may damage the ice maker.” If the unit is frozen over, contact Samsung Support rather than applying heat or attempting a manual defrost.

How long to wait after a successful reset
Samsung says normal production may begin after about three hours, while normal amounts can take as long as 24 hours to return. Its support guidance estimates one tray every 45–65 minutes for a refrigerator-compartment ice maker and one tray every 85 minutes for a freezer-compartment ice maker. These are estimates, not guarantees for every model or operating condition.
If production remains absent after that period, use the checks above and the instructions for your exact model. Samsung Support is the appropriate next step for repeated chimes, no response after the prescribed reset steps, or a frozen-over ice maker.
