Apple’s public diagrams identify nearby features but do not label every microphone opening, so a visible grille or hole is not necessarily a microphone.
Where to look for the iPhone 12 microphones
Bottom edge
Look along the lower edge around the Lightning connector. An internal-view diagram for iPhone 12 identifies bottom microphones, but it does not establish which exterior holes correspond to them. Avoid assuming that every opening beside the connector is a microphone.
Top/front area
The front microphone area is around the top of the display, near the receiver and front sensors. Apple’s user-facing guide places the front camera at the top center but does not mark the microphone aperture, so treat this as a general location rather than an exact hole-by-hole map.
Rear-camera area
There is also a rear microphone area near the camera cluster. On iPhone 12, the cameras and flash are at the upper left on the back. The Pro Max has a larger three-camera system and a LiDAR scanner; those landmarks help identify the camera area but do not provide a precise microphone-aperture map.

Do the locations differ across iPhone 12 models?
The family includes iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max. The practical landmarks are the same: Lightning connector at the bottom and a rear-camera area on the back. The available Apple location guide and specifications do not give an aperture-by-aperture microphone map for all four models, or establish that Pro models place microphones differently.
If you are looking up a repair part, use the exact model name. The Pro Max camera and sensor arrangement differs, and an internal diagram for one model is not enough to confirm replacement-part compatibility for another.

How to narrow down an audio problem
These comparisons can help you notice whether a problem is associated with a particular recording use. They are practical troubleshooting steps, not a definitive Apple diagnostic test.
- Remove the case temporarily if it might cover an opening, then make a short Voice Memos recording.
- Record a short video using the front camera and listen to its audio.
- Record another short video using the rear camera and compare the sound.
- Note whether the problem appears in one recording use or across all of them. If it persists or you suspect damage, seek qualified service or model-specific repair guidance.
Do not push a pin, toothpick, or other object into a tiny hole. The visible openings are not reliably identifiable by appearance alone, and probing them can cause damage.

What Apple’s documentation confirms
Apple’s iPhone 12 guide labels the Lightning connector, front camera, rear cameras, and flash, but does not label microphone apertures. Apple’s iPhone 12 technical specifications list “Built-in microphones” and describe microphone modes including Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum. The location information supports identifying broad areas, not counting or mapping every exterior opening.
