On Lenovo computers that have an emergency-reset hole, it is usually on the underside—but the exact position depends on the model, and some Lenovo computers do not have one. Find your exact model’s user guide and check its “Bottom view” diagram for a label such as “Emergency-reset hole” before inserting anything. Lenovo’s Novo button is a different control, not the emergency-reset hole.
How to find the reset hole on your Lenovo
- Identify your exact model. Use the model name or machine type shown on the computer or in its system information.
- Open the matching Lenovo user guide. Find the “Bottom view” diagram or the equivalent hardware layout and look for a label reading “Emergency-reset hole.” Lenovo guides for models such as the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7, ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, P14s Gen 5 AMD, and T16 Gen 3, and ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 and T14s 2-in-1 Gen 1 show model-specific layouts.
- Match the diagram to the physical computer. Do not infer that an opening is a reset hole based on its size or location. If the guide does not label it as an emergency-reset hole, do not probe it.
What the emergency-reset hole does
On supported models, the emergency-reset hole temporarily cuts the computer’s power supply to help recover it when it stops responding and cannot be turned off with the power button. Lenovo’s P1 Gen 7 guide describes that purpose and specifies a straightened paper clip for the procedure.
How to use it when the computer is unresponsive
- Disconnect the computer from AC power.
- Only if your model’s guide confirms an emergency-reset hole, insert a straightened paper clip into that hole to cut off power temporarily.
- Reconnect AC power, then turn on the computer.
If the computer remains unresponsive, follow the support instructions for your model. Lenovo’s P1 Gen 7 guide directs users who still have trouble to Lenovo Customer Support; use your own model’s support route rather than assuming that guide applies to every Lenovo computer.
If your Lenovo has no reset hole
Some Lenovo systems do not have an emergency-reset hole. If the hole is absent from your model’s guide, leave unidentified openings alone and use Lenovo’s general no-power troubleshooting guidance for the applicable system. Lenovo notes that other power-drain steps may apply, including holding the power button for at least 10 seconds on applicable systems; that is not a universal instruction for every model.

When a small opening is unfamiliar, the model’s documentation is the deciding evidence: a labeled emergency-reset hole and the Novo control have different locations and functions.
