The Configuration Manager (formerly SCCM) client installation source is on the site server, in the Configuration Manager installation folder’s Client directory. Its network share is typically \<site server>SMS_<site code>Client. That is different from the folder where the client is installed on a Windows computer and from the folder containing its setup log.
Where to find the client installation source on the site server
On the site server, open the Configuration Manager installation folder and then its Client subfolder. You can also access the shared source using this path pattern: \<site server>SMS_<site code>Client. For example, replace the placeholders with your site server’s name and three-character site code. You need appropriate administrator permissions to access the installation files.
The folder contains CCMSetup.exe and supporting files. Microsoft documents the source location and share format in its Windows client deployment guidance.
Which installer to run
Run CCMSetup.exe to install the client. Do not run client.msi directly: Microsoft states, “You can’t directly install client.msi.” CCMSetup obtains the files required for installation from a management point or a specified source; these may include client.msi, prerequisites, and client updates or fixes.

CCMSetup parameters, which begin with a slash, go before any client.msi properties. A common command form is:
CCMSetup.exe /mp:<management-point> SMSSITECODE=<site-code>
Here, /mp helps CCMSetup find a download source, while SMSSITECODE configures site assignment. The correct arguments depend on your site’s authentication, boundaries, and management-point configuration. See Microsoft’s client installation parameters and properties.

How the source path differs by deployment method
| Method | Where installation content comes from | Access needed | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual installation from the site-server share | \<site server>SMS_<site code>Client; run CCMSetup.exe. |
The installer’s account needs access to the share. | Manual client installation. |
| Explicit local or UNC source | A path supplied with CCMSetup’s /source parameter. |
The Windows account running the installation needs read access to the source. | Installation from a chosen local or network location. |
| Management point or distribution point | CCMSetup can obtain required content through the management point; a management point can direct the client to a distribution point for installation content. | Access and discovery depend on the site’s configuration. | Managed client deployment. |
| Configuration Manager package-based client upgrade | A network source folder distributed to the intended distribution points. | The deployment computer must be able to access the source folder. | Client upgrade deployment. |
| Intune MDM deployment | CCMSetup.msi in the site-server installation directory’s bini386 folder. |
Follow the access and deployment requirements for the Intune setup. | Bootstrap package for Intune MDM deployment. |
These locations and methods serve different purposes; the Intune CCMSetup.msi package and the Client share are not interchangeable paths. Microsoft’s deployment documentation covers package-based and Intune deployment details.
Where the installed client and setup log are on the endpoint
- Installed client files: By default, the client is installed in
%WinDir%CCM. TheCCMINSTALLDIRproperty can change this location. - Client setup log: Check
%WinDir%ccmsetupLogsccmsetup.logfor setup return codes and troubleshooting details. - Core DLL:
ccmcore.dllis also installed in%WinDir%System32; 64-bit Windows additionally has a copy in%WinDir%SysWOW64.
These are endpoint locations, not the site server’s installation source. Microsoft documents the paths and installation behavior in its client installation guidance.
