Ray Kurzweil’s stated year for the technological singularity is 2045. That is one futurist’s forecast—not a date chosen by scientists collectively or established by scientific consensus. Researcher surveys estimate related AI milestones, but they ask different questions from Kurzweil’s definition of a singularity.

What does Kurzweil mean by the technological singularity?

Kurzweil describes the singularity as a profound transformation in human capability: nonbiological intelligence improves its own design, technological progress accelerates, and change eventually moves too quickly for unenhanced human intelligence to follow. It is therefore more specific than the general idea that AI will become highly capable.

In the official Q&A for The Singularity Is Near, Kurzweil writes, “I set the date for the Singularity—representing a profound and disruptive transformation in human capability—as 2045.” Read Kurzweil’s official Q&A.

He reiterated the forecast at an MIT lecture in 2025. MIT News reported him saying, “By 2045, once we have fully merged with AI, our intelligence will no longer be constrained … it will expand a millionfold,” followed by, “This is what we call the singularity.” These are Kurzweil’s predictions, not demonstrated capabilities or independently validated projections. What do expert surveys predict instead?

Surveys offer estimates for defined AI capabilities or automation milestones. Those estimates can help show how researchers view the pace of AI progress, but they do not directly measure when a self-improving singularity will occur.

Source and evidence date Event being forecast Reported estimate How to interpret it
AI researchers surveyed for a 2024 study; 2,778 respondents Unaided machines outperforming humans in every possible task 50% estimate by 2047 A survey aggregate for broad machine capability, not a singularity date. Grace and coauthors’ survey.
Same 2024 AI researcher survey All human occupations becoming fully automatable 50% estimate by 2116 A distinct automation milestone; it should not be treated as the date of a singularity. Grace and coauthors’ survey.
Expert groups surveyed in 2012/2013; results published in 2016 High-level machine intelligence Median estimate: a 50% chance around 2040–2050, rising to 90% by 2075 Respondents expected superintelligence less than 30 years after high-level machine intelligence. This is a historical snapshot, and its event definitions differ from Kurzweil’s. Müller and Bostrom’s survey chapter.
Multi-logistic model paper published in 2025 Possible fading of the current deep-learning growth wave if no fundamental innovation emerges Around 2035–2040 A conditional model projection, not a probability estimate or singularity date. The paper argues a singularity is not likely in the foreseeable future, but its conclusion cannot rule out future breakthroughs. The 2025 multi-logistic model paper.

Why the dates are not directly comparable

“High-level machine intelligence,” machines outperforming humans across every possible task, full occupational automation, and a self-improving singularity are not interchangeable events. Each forecast depends on its own definition, assumptions, and method. Kurzweil gives a target year for his particular vision; surveys report respondents’ probabilities for operationally described milestones; the 2025 model gives a conditional projection about a growth wave.

No reviewed source establishes a validated probability or calendar year for a technological singularity under one shared definition. So the careful answer is that Kurzweil predicts 2045, while surveys of AI researchers and other models offer estimates for related—but different—outcomes.

Further reading on Kurzweil’s prediction

The Singularity Is Nearer: When We Merge with AI presents Kurzweil’s more recent account of the idea. It is useful for understanding his argument, but it should be read as his case for the forecast rather than independent evidence that it will happen. His earlier book, The Singularity Is Near, is also directly relevant to his stated 2045 date.
