Apple has reportedly asked Samsung Display and LG Display to develop OLED panels with much smaller visible borders, but there is no confirmed bezel-free iPhone, Samsung-only deal, finalized display specification, or launch date. Reports have described different designs and conflicting schedules, so the clearest picture is a timeline of evolving rumors—not a product announcement.

What Apple has reportedly asked display suppliers to develop

In July 2023, MacRumors, citing The Elec, reported that Apple had asked both Samsung Display and LG Display to work on bezel-free OLED panels. That was a reported development request, not evidence that Apple awarded production to either company or selected a panel for a particular iPhone.

“Bezel-free” and “zero-bezel” are loose descriptions in these reports. They point to reducing or eliminating the visible border around the active display; they do not establish Apple’s definition, a final industrial design, or literal pixels wrapping around every edge. “Near bezel-free” is therefore a more cautious description of the reported goal.

How the reports and proposed designs have changed

Date What was reported What it does not establish
July 24, 2023 MacRumors, citing The Elec, said Apple had requested bezel-free OLED development from Samsung Display and LG Display. The report described a preference for retaining a flat display. A production award, an exclusive Samsung contract, or a launch date.
December 26, 2024 Gadgets 360, relaying The Elec, reported that a 2026 launch looked unfeasible while technical discussions continued with Samsung Display and LG Display. A confirmed cancellation or a replacement launch year.
April 24, 2026 MacRumors relayed a leak describing shallow curves on all four edges and a polarizer-free display, associating the concept with a rumored 2027 anniversary iPhone. Official specifications, a confirmed anniversary model, or a verified supplier deal.
September 22, 2026 AppleInsider reported that UBI Research projected Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE) use in Pro iPhones in late 2029. A confirmed schedule or proof that the 2027 rumor is impossible.

The timing reports conflict: the 2026 anniversary-phone rumor links COE to 2027, while the later report places COE in Pro iPhones in late 2029. Neither is an Apple-confirmed roadmap, and the available reports do not resolve the difference.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Why the display may be difficult to engineer

The reported hurdles involve fitting display, camera, and radio components into a phone while protecting the OLED panel and controlling what users see at the edges. The sources describe possible challenges, but do not establish which one is the main blocker today.

  • Thin-film encapsulation (TFE): The 2023 and 2024 reports associate TFE with protecting OLED components and with the work needed for the proposed design. They do not provide an Apple or Samsung engineering document confirming a specific implementation problem.
  • Under-panel camera (UPC): Hiding a camera under the screen could reduce visible cutouts in principle. The reports connect under-panel camera integration to development and timing concerns, but do not verify that an iPhone will use one or establish its image quality.
  • Display circuitry and component space: The 2024 account describes folding display circuits below the screen and preserving room for other components as challenges.
  • Antennas and interference: The same report identifies antenna placement and interference as concerns when reducing the space around the display.
  • Adhesive bonding: The 2024 account also names optical clear adhesive as a technical challenge.

Flat edges, shallow curves, and the trade-offs

The early design description and later leak do not match exactly. The 2023 report said Apple reportedly wanted to keep a flat screen, citing concerns about optical distortion and durability with curved displays. In April 2026, MacRumors relayed a Digital Chat Station claim about shallow “micro-curves” on all four edges. That is not the same as the pronounced waterfall curves used by some phones, but it is still a different reported concept. The evidence cannot show whether Apple changed direction, considered separate designs, or whether the later claim is inaccurate.

Curving the edges may help reduce the appearance of a border, but the cited reports offer no comparative durability or usability test results. They also do not agree on whether front components would all disappear under the screen or whether some visible cutout would remain.

What “pol-less” and COE mean in the rumor

MacRumors used “pol-less” for the display described in the 2026 leak. In that account, COE—Color Filter on Encapsulation—places a color filter on the encapsulation layer and removes the polarizing film. The article said a thinner stack could let more light through and reduce power draw, while making reflections harder to manage. These are technology explanations in secondary reporting, not measured results for an Apple device.

What is known—and what remains unconfirmed

The reports support a limited conclusion: Apple has reportedly explored near bezel-free OLED development with Samsung Display and LG Display, and suppliers may still face substantial engineering work. They do not establish that Samsung is the sole supplier for this design, that Apple has finalized flat or curved edges, or that a particular iPhone will launch with it in 2027 or 2029.
