The company’s final named models reached the end of production between May and July 2009. No known company makes new consumer LaserDisc players today, so anyone who wants to play existing discs should look for used or refurbished equipment.
When did LaserDisc player production end?
Pioneer announced the production shutdown on January 14, 2009, saying it planned to make approximately 3,000 more players before stopping. The company’s Japanese support FAQ gives model-specific end dates for the four models named in the announcement:

These are production end dates, not a record of when every retailer sold its last unit. On September 25, 2009, Pioneer said the small additional allocation it had offered through its Japanese website had sold out; that notice does not establish when remaining retail inventory everywhere was gone. The models were part of a longer wind-down. Pioneer’s FAQ lists the HLD-X9 as ending in July 2002 and the DVL-H9 and LD-S9 as ending in June 2002. It states that all of Pioneer’s LaserDisc player models had been discontinued for more than eight years. Pioneer’s LaserDisc production end FAQ

Why did Pioneer stop making players?
Pioneer attributed the decision to the difficulty of obtaining the specialized parts needed to keep producing players as newer formats such as DVD and Blu-ray became established. The company’s announcement put it this way: “However, under the market environment in which new media such as DVD and Blu-ray discs now dominate, it has become difficult for Pioneer to procure the parts required to produce LD players.” Pioneer’s January 14, 2009 announcement
That is the reason Pioneer gave for its own manufacturing decision; it does not identify one newer format as the sole cause.

How many LaserDisc players were sold?
Pioneer’s 2009 announcement reported more than 9.5 million Pioneer players sold worldwide “to date.” It separately put worldwide sales of LaserDisc player devices across the market at more than 16.8 million. A separate Japanese notice gives approximately 3.6 million Pioneer players sold in Japan cumulatively since the format’s Japanese launch in October 1981. That domestic figure should not be added to or substituted for either worldwide figure. Pioneer’s customer notice, updated November 17, 2020

Does anyone make new LaserDisc players now?
No known company is making new consumer LaserDisc players today. Pioneer’s records establish that its player line ended in 2009, but they are not a worldwide census that can rule out every niche or one-off device. For ordinary buyers, the practical option is a used or refurbished player—not a new production model.
What should you check when buying a used player?
The DVL-919 and CLD-R5 are among Pioneer’s documented final models, but their inclusion here is historical, not a recommendation or indication of current stock. Compare the condition of the specific unit and whether it suits your discs and setup before buying.

- Playback condition: Look for evidence that the actual unit plays discs, rather than relying only on a power-on demonstration.
- Disc and television compatibility: Confirm the player supports the disc and TV standards you need.
- Connections: Check that its video outputs work with your display or any equipment you plan to use between the player and screen.
- Included remote: Confirm whether a remote is included and whether key functions can be used without it.
- Returns and shipping: Review the seller’s return terms and how the heavy, delicate mechanism will be packed and protected.

Pioneer said it would retain performance parts for eight years after each model’s production ended and could continue repairs beyond that period while parts remained. Its Japanese customer-support notice, updated in 2020, says parts had run out and Pioneer’s after-sales service had ended.
