Database foreign keys are not obligatory in Laravel, but they are a strong default when a reference between records must remain valid no matter which part of your application writes to the database. Laravel migrations let you declare that rule explicitly; the database then enforces referential integrity rather than relying only on application code.
When should you use a foreign key?
Use a database foreign-key constraint when a row in one table is meant to refer to an existing row in another table, and that rule should hold whenever data is committed. For example, if each order must belong to a real customer, a constraint on orders.customer_id can prevent an order from pointing to a customer that does not exist.
Laravel describes foreign-key constraints as a way to “force referential integrity at the database level” in its Laravel 11.x migration guide. That protection is independent of Laravel model relationships and application validation: database writes from another script, a maintenance task, or a different service are subject to the same constraint when they use that database.
This is a design recommendation, not a Laravel requirement. Think carefully before constraining references to external systems, independently managed databases, or records that are intentionally incomplete during an import or staging process. In those cases, decide how the architecture will ensure or reconcile integrity; a local database constraint cannot validate a record stored elsewhere.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to declare a foreign key in a Laravel migration
For a conventional relationship, use foreignId and constrained in the migration that creates the referencing table:
$table->foreignId('user_id')->constrained();
Laravel infers the referenced table and key from conventional naming. If conventions do not match your schema, declare the column and relationship explicitly:

$table->unsignedBigInteger('user_id');
$table->foreign('user_id')->references('id')->on('users');
When a reference is optional, make the column nullable before calling constrained():
$table->foreignId('user_id')->nullable()->constrained();
A nullable foreign-key column permits the absence of a reference; it does not permit a non-null value that points to a missing parent. Choose the nullability to reflect whether the relationship itself is optional.

Choose what happens when a referenced row changes
Foreign keys can define actions for deletion or update. Select an action based on the meaning of the relationship, rather than applying cascade automatically.
| Behavior | Use it when | Laravel migration example |
|---|---|---|
| Cascade | Dependent records should be deleted or updated along with the referenced record. | ->cascadeOnDelete() or ->cascadeOnUpdate() |
| Set null | The dependent record should remain, but its reference should be cleared. The referencing column must be nullable. | ->nullOnDelete() |
| Restrict | The parent should not be deleted while dependent records still refer to it. | ->restrictOnDelete() |
| No action | You want the database’s no-action behavior for the relevant operation. | ->noActionOnDelete() or ->noActionOnUpdate() |
For example, an order history that must remain available may call for blocking deletion of a customer with orders, while a disposable dependent record may appropriately be deleted with its parent. The correct action depends on your data-retention and business rules.

Check database and Laravel version support
Foreign-key behavior depends on the database engine and its configuration, so verify the deployed environment rather than assuming every installation behaves alike. The Laravel 11.x migration guide warns that SQLite foreign-key support must be enabled in configuration. The Laravel 13.x database guide says SQLite constraints are enabled by default and can be disabled with DB_FOREIGN_KEYS=false. These statements describe different Laravel versions; check the documentation for the version your application actually runs.
Also make sure the target database supports the constraint and that existing data satisfies it before applying a migration. Rows with missing parent records can prevent the constraint from being created until the data is corrected.

Dropping a foreign-key constraint
Laravel generates a conventional constraint name based on the table and column, ending in _foreign. You can drop a constraint using that name, or pass the column name and let Laravel derive it:
$table->dropForeign('users_user_id_foreign');
$table->dropForeign(['user_id']);
Use the actual table and column names from your schema when writing a rollback or schema change.
Foreign keys and performance
Do not add or omit foreign keys on the assumption that they always improve or always harm performance. Their documented purpose is enforcing referential integrity; performance effects depend on the database engine, workload, and operations involved. Treat performance as an environment-specific question rather than a universal rule.
