There is no single best day or advance-booking window that guarantees the lowest airfare. Expedia’s 2026 averages point to Friday as its cheapest booking day overall, while its U.S. domestic economy snapshot found lower average fares when booking 15–30 days ahead. Those are different measures from a particular dataset—not promises for your route. Use them as clues, then compare your actual itinerary and track fares with Google Flights.
What the timing data says—and what it doesn’t
Expedia’s 2026 Air Hacks report found Friday was the cheapest day to book overall in its dataset. Its ticket-pricing analysis covered Expedia.com bookings from December 2024 through November 2025. Separately, Expedia’s 2026 U.S. domestic snapshot found economy fares averaged lowest when booked 15–30 days before departure. This is an advance-purchase window for U.S. domestic economy fares, based on Expedia.com bookings from December 2024 through November 2025; it is not a universal booking rule for other markets, cabins, or routes. The two findings can coexist: one concerns which weekday a booking was made, and the other concerns how far ahead it was made. Neither establishes that waiting for a specific weekday or number of days will save you money. The reviewed sources do not provide an independent cross-provider dataset validating Expedia’s averages across other sellers or markets.

Booking day is not travel day
Expedia separately reported Tuesday as the least expensive domestic travel day compared with Sunday in its dataset. That describes the day of the trip, not the day you buy the ticket. A lower average for one travel day does not mean it will suit your schedule or be cheaper on your route.
How to track a fare in Google Flights
- Open Google Flights and enter your origin, destination, travel dates, passenger count, and cabin. Use the stops and other filters to reflect the trip you would actually take.
- Review the available flights and select the specific itinerary you want to monitor, or track the route. For flexible travel dates, select “Any dates” when available.
- Turn on price tracking. Google says it can email you about significant price changes; for a flexible-date route, it may send an email when the minimum price drops significantly over a month. - Check your email and revisit the itinerary when an alert arrives. Confirm that the dates, airports, stops, fare conditions, and total price still work before booking.
Tracking lets you monitor a route or flight without repeatedly restarting the same search. It does not establish that an alert service includes every fare or will find the lowest price.

Use flexible dates and airports to compare real options
If you can shift your trip, use Google Flights’ price graph to explore fares across weeks or months. Compare nearby airports when they are practical, and weigh the full trip rather than the displayed fare alone. Google’s fare tips may say prices are “less than usual” or “likely to increase”; its guidance is based on past price trends, and future prices may behave differently. Before choosing between options, compare:
- Total price and fare conditions: Check baggage rules and other terms that affect what you will pay or receive.
- Dates: Compare the dates you prefer with nearby alternatives, including the return trip.
- Airports: Include the time and cost of getting to a different departure or arrival airport.
- Stops and travel time: Consider layover length and total journey time, not just the ticket price.
- Price signal: Treat an average or forecast as context, not certainty about what your itinerary will cost next.
When to book: a practical decision
Enter your real route and dates, compare acceptable alternatives, and turn on tracking if you are not ready to buy. Decide ahead of time what price and itinerary trade-offs you will accept. If an available fare meets those priorities, the Expedia averages and Google’s historical-trend signals cannot tell you that waiting will produce a better one. Buy based on the trip and fare conditions you can confirm, rather than on a guarantee of future savings.
