Texas Instruments says it delivered samples of its first wireless device built on its 65-nanometer process around April 2005. The company announced the process in April 2004, expected its first product samples in the first quarter of 2005, and announced process qualification and a move toward volume manufacturing on December 6, 2005. The available announcements do not identify that first sampled wireless device by product name.

When did TI deliver its first 65nm wireless device?

TI’s December 6, 2005 announcement said it had delivered the first samples of a wireless device using its 65nm process eight months earlier. That places the delivery at approximately April 2005; the announcement gives the interval, not an exact delivery date. Sampling was an early product milestone, distinct from the later qualification and manufacturing ramp.

The schedule followed TI’s April 2004 disclosure of the process. In that filing, TI said it expected the first product built with the new process to sample in the first quarter of 2005. The later account of wireless-device samples is consistent with that forecast.

What was the first device?

The cited TI materials describe it only as a wireless device; they do not give a product name or enough detail to identify its function or wireless standard. It would therefore be inaccurate to name OMAP 3 or OMAPV1035 as the first sampled device on the basis of these announcements.

What happened after the samples?

In December 2005, TI said the 65nm process was qualified and moving to volume manufacturing. This marks a later stage than product sampling: a sample demonstrates an early device, while qualification and a production ramp concern readiness to manufacture using the process.

TI’s later product disclosures illustrate uses of 65nm in mobile technology, but do not establish that either product was the unnamed first wireless device.

OMAP 3 applications processor

In an April 2006 filing, TI described OMAP 3 as an applications processor it “believed to be the industry’s first” built using 65nm process technology. It was intended for advanced cell phones, with the aim of supporting improved entertainment and productivity features. This is TI’s specific claim about a 65nm applications processor—not evidence that TI was first in every category of wireless chip.

OMAPV1035 cellular baseband

A November 2006 announcement from TI India described the OMAPV1035 as a 65nm, single-chip ARM9 baseband with DSP support for GSM, GPRS and EDGE. It provides a concrete example of the process being used in a cellular baseband product.

Why did 65nm matter for mobile devices?

TI’s April 2004 disclosure said its 65nm process increased transistor performance by 40% compared with its advanced 90nm process. It also said the process could support hundreds of millions of transistors and integrate analog and digital functions. Those capabilities could help combine more processing and system functions in a smaller chip—useful in space-constrained mobile devices.

When it announced qualification in December 2005, TI characterized the process as providing more processing performance in a smaller space without increasing power consumption. That is TI’s description of the process benefit; the cited material does not provide a workload-specific power comparison or independent benchmark.

Was TI really first with a 65nm wireless processor?

The wording needs qualification. TI documented an early 65nm wireless-device sampling milestone and later called OMAP 3, specifically, an applications processor it believed was the industry’s first using 65nm technology. Those statements support a narrower claim, not the broader conclusion that TI was first in every wireless-chip category. The available material also does not provide competitor benchmarks or a comprehensive comparison of rival products and production dates.

TI’s 2005 business context

TI reported $11.72 billion in semiconductor revenue in 2005, up 7% year over year, and said wireless revenue grew 14%. These are company-wide, dated business figures; they provide context for TI’s wireless activity but do not measure the commercial success of the first 65nm device.
