Replace a Pixel when its regular security updates have ended if you depend on it for sensitive accounts or want ongoing security support. That is a practical decision point, not an automatic emergency: Google’s published policy gives update periods by model, but does not set a universal replacement date or say an unsupported phone becomes immediately unsafe or unusable.
How long does Google support each Pixel?
Google’s update period is tied to when a model first became available on the Google Store in the US—not when you bought your phone. Google publishes availability by month and year, so those dates do not establish an exact final-patch day.

Check your Pixel’s update status
- Open Settings and find the exact model, Android version, and security update level. Google says the Android version and security update level are shown in Settings.
- Compare that model with Google’s current support list. Nearby generations can have different support periods.
- If your model is still within its stated period but appears behind, check for updates in Settings. Google says rollouts can be gradual, with timing that may depend on carrier and device.
Decide whether to replace it now
If regular security updates have stopped, weigh the phone’s support status against how you use it. Replacing sooner makes sense if you rely on it for sensitive accounts and prefer continued security updates. You may also need a replacement if the phone no longer meets your app or carrier compatibility needs, or its condition makes it unreliable.

If your use is less sensitive and the phone still meets your needs, the end of updates alone does not prove it has been compromised or that it will stop working immediately. Google’s policy pages do not quantify the risk of continued use, set an immediate safety threshold, or establish a universal app-support cutoff. Make the decision based on your own security needs, compatibility requirements, device condition, and budget.
Compare support before choosing a replacement
Check the exact replacement model’s update commitment and its first US Google Store availability date, then compare the remaining stated support period with the total cost and practical fit. Also consider battery condition, carrier compatibility, required apps, and whether the new model’s features matter to you. Google’s published update policy establishes the support terms; it does not compare prices, repair costs, or third-party app support.
