Safari blocks third-party cookies by default. WebKit announced full blocking on March 24, 2020, for iOS and iPadOS 13.4 and Safari 13.1 on macOS. The announcement is historical, not a new 2026 change; WebKit’s current tracking-prevention reference continues to describe third-party cookies as blocked by default.
What Safari’s third-party cookie blocking means
A cookie is considered third-party in this context because of where its resource is loaded, not because it has a special cookie format. If a page at news.example loads content from adtech.example, that content is third-party relative to the page shown in the address bar. A subdomain such as sub.news.example is treated as first-party to news.example because both share the same registrable domain. WebKit explains these terms in its Tracking Prevention in WebKit reference.
WebKit’s current documentation says third-party cookies are blocked by default, with no exceptions to the blocking itself. It does not mean Safari blocks all cookies: a site’s first-party session is a separate case. In its 2020 announcement, WebKit summarized the change: “Cookies for cross-site resources are now blocked by default across the board.”
When the change took effect
WebKit published “Full Third-Party Cookie Blocking and More” on March 24, 2020. It identified the change with iOS and iPadOS 13.4 and Safari 13.1 on macOS. WebKit described it as the culmination of earlier Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) restrictions that had already blocked most third-party cookies.

Why an embedded login may fail
An embedded service may expect the browser to send its cookie when it loads inside another site. With third-party cookies blocked, that ambient cookie access may not be available, so the embed may not recognize an existing login or may fail to maintain a session. The precise behavior depends on the site’s integration; the 2020 announcement does not establish a version-by-version troubleshooting matrix for every Safari release, Apple platform, or embedded WKWebView.
Authentication handoffs can also be affected by two related ITP behaviors. Cookie blocking uses latch mode: if a request is denied cookie access, redirects stemming from that request are denied access as well. Cross-site referrers are reduced to their origin, for both HTTP referrer headers and document.referrer. A login flow or attribution system that relies on cookies or full cross-site referrer paths should account for those constraints.

Three ways to handle cross-site authentication

For a site that can change its authentication architecture, WebKit’s launch guidance points toward OAuth 2.0 authorization followed by a first-party server-set session cookie. When an embedded third party needs access to its own cookies, use the Storage Access API where appropriate and design for its required user control. See WebKit’s 2020 implementation guidance and its current tracking-prevention reference; verify the API behavior for the specific Safari and platform versions you support.
Other ITP storage limits to distinguish
Third-party cookie blocking is not the only tracking-prevention behavior. The time limits below have different triggers and apply to different storage types; they do not mean that every cookie expires after seven days.

- Seven days without user interaction: WebKit’s current reference says JavaScript-created cookies and other script-writable storage may be removed after seven days without user interaction on the site. In its 2020 announcement, WebKit listed IndexedDB, LocalStorage, media keys, SessionStorage, service-worker registrations, and service-worker cache among storage affected by the then-described policy. WebKit defines user interaction as a click, tap, or keyboard entry; scrolling does not count.
- Up to 24 hours for a specific landing-page case: WebKit says link-decoration detection can cap JavaScript-created cookies on landing pages to 24 hours.
- Up to seven days for a different cookie case: WebKit says defenses against third-party CNAME and IP-address cloaking can cap the expiry of cookies set in HTTP responses to seven days.
These are policy intervals described by WebKit, not measured statistics about how many users or sites are affected. The current details are in Tracking Prevention in WebKit.

Test the real cross-site flows you depend on—especially embedded sign-in, redirects, and session continuity—rather than assuming that behavior in another browser predicts Safari behavior.
