There is no magic number of messages or days that makes meeting a dating-app match safe. Meet when you feel ready, they respect your pace, and you have a practical plan: choose a busy public place, tell someone you trust where you will be, and arrange your own way home. These steps can reduce risk, but they cannot guarantee another person’s behavior.
How to know whether you are ready to meet
Readiness is personal, not a countdown. RAINN advises taking time to get to know a match and meeting only when you are comfortable. Pay attention to how they respond when you set a boundary or ask to slow down: respect for your pace is a useful readiness signal, while pressure to rush is a reason to pause.
You do not need to prove that someone is dangerous before postponing or cancelling. If you feel uneasy before the date, you can change the plan or decline. You do not owe a match a meeting, an explanation, or extra time at the expense of your comfort. RAINN’s safer-dating guidance also makes clear that precautions cannot guarantee your safety or prevent another person’s predatory behavior.
Set up a first date you can leave easily
Choose a visible, populated place
Meet somewhere public, busy, and well-lit, such as a café or restaurant. A daytime date or bringing a friend are additional options if they would make you more comfortable; Police Scotland includes both in its dating-app safety guidance. Avoid making a first meeting at either person’s home, and do not share your home address until trust is established.

Tell someone your plan
Before you go, give a trusted friend or family member the venue, the match’s identity, and the time you expect to return. You can arrange a check-in or share your live location if you want. A prearranged signal or code word can help you ask that person for support without having to explain in the moment.
Keep control of transportation and your exit
Use your own transportation or arrange a trusted drop-off and pickup rather than relying on a new match to drive you. Make sure you can pay for your return trip and leave promptly if you feel uncomfortable. Keep your phone available; a portable charger is optional, not a prerequisite.

Keep your food and drinks in view and moderate alcohol so you can make decisions and leave when you want. These are practical precautions, not a way to certify that a person or situation is safe.
What to do if the match keeps postponing or asks for money
A single rescheduled date does not prove that someone is a scammer. But repeated inability or unwillingness to meet can be concerning, particularly if the match moves the conversation off the app and later asks for money, gifts, or an investment. The Federal Trade Commission describes this pattern in its consumer guidance, “Why can’t that new love interest meet in person?” and “Looking for love? Watch out for scammers.”
