It did not hold the lead for the full year: Counterpoint ranked Huawei third globally for 2020.
When did Huawei become the world’s largest smartphone maker?
Huawei took the quarterly global shipment lead in Q2 2020, covering April through June. Canalys estimated that Huawei shipped 55.8 million smartphones, or 19.6% of the market, compared with Samsung’s 53.7 million and 18.9%. Canalys describes these figures as sell-in shipments—devices shipped into sales channels—not consumer activations. Canalys’s July 31, 2020 report and a separate Counterpoint Market Monitor release both identified Huawei as the quarter’s leader.
“Number one” here means first in a research firm’s estimate of worldwide smartphone shipments for one quarter. It does not mean Huawei was the largest technology company by revenue, led annual smartphone shipments, or had the most active users.
Did Huawei overtake Samsung in 2020?
Yes, for Q2’s quarterly shipment ranking, but the size of the lead was modest. The two research firms published different estimates for the overall market, so their figures should be read separately rather than combined or averaged.

The estimates differ in their reported market totals and declines; the open releases do not fully explain the methodological differences. Both nevertheless place Huawei first. The result was partly relative: Canalys estimated Huawei’s shipments fell 5% year over year while Samsung’s fell 30%, against a shrinking global market. Canalys and Counterpoint are the sources for their respective estimates. These are tracker figures, not company-reported audited shipment totals.
Why did Huawei become number one in smartphone shipments?
China recovered sooner than many other markets
The pandemic disrupted smartphone sales unevenly across regions. China, Huawei’s largest market, recovered earlier than many other countries during Q2 2020. Canalys estimated Huawei’s Mainland China shipment share at 44.3%, up from 38.2% a year earlier. Counterpoint estimated that China accounted for 71% of Huawei’s shipments that quarter and that Huawei held 47% of the Chinese market. The percentages differ because they come from separate trackers; neither should be treated as a single agreed measurement.

Huawei’s performance was concentrated at home
Counterpoint estimated Huawei shipments outside China declined 29% year over year. That contrast helps explain why the company could top the global quarterly ranking without demonstrating broad-based growth worldwide. As Counterpoint analyst Tarun Pathak put it in the August 2020 release, “Huawei was able to attain this feat due to a unique market scenario created because of COVID-19.” The comment is an analyst’s interpretation of an unusual quarter, not a separate shipment measurement.
Was Huawei number one for the whole year?
No. Counterpoint ranked Huawei third globally for full-year 2020, after its Q2 peak. Its January 2021 report on 2020 shipments cited severe component shortages following escalated US trade restrictions. It also identified the Mate 40 Pro and Nova 7 among the 5G models that supported Huawei’s performance, while China represented around 70% of its full-year shipments.

Supply pressure was visible in China by year-end. Canalys reported Huawei’s Q4 China share, including Honor, fell to 22% from 41% in Q3; shipments nearly halved sequentially. The change is one reason the Q2 milestone should not be mistaken for a sustained annual lead. Canalys’s January 29, 2021 report covers the China figures.

Later rankings describe different periods and geographies. Omdia reported that Huawei regained first place in Mainland China in 2025, its first time at the top there in five years, while Apple remained the leading global vendor for the third consecutive year. In IDC’s Q2 2026 worldwide ranking, Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo made the listed top five; Huawei was grouped under “Others.” Those results do not contradict Huawei’s Q2 2020 quarterly global lead.

For context, IDC estimated 276.3 million global smartphone shipments in Q2 2026, down 7.4% year over year. See Omdia’s 2025 market report and IDC’s worldwide smartphone market tracker for those later rankings. A Mainland China ranking should not be compared directly with a worldwide one, and a quarterly shipment position is not an annual ranking.
