Samsung has not announced a launch date for a single 1-petabyte SSD. The “by 2030” timing comes from a reported NAND-development target of more than 1,000 layers—a technology goal that could make such a drive possible, not a promise that it will reach production or stores by then. Samsung’s more recent roadmap projects roughly 420 layers by 2029 and more than 560 during 2030, while treating 900–1,000 layers as a later area of exploration. TechRadar Pro’s account of the 2026 roadmap does not give a 1PB drive release date.

Does Samsung expect a 1PB SSD to arrive in 2030?

Not as a confirmed product. The 2030 date is best understood as a possible horizon inferred from Samsung’s reported goal to develop NAND with more than 1,000 layers. That target could enable a 1PB SSD, but Samsung has not announced a product name, production date, qualification schedule, price or retail availability for a single drive of that capacity. TechRadar Pro’s 2024 report on the layer target describes a technology ambition, not a shipping commitment.

The distinction matters because NAND layer count is only one part of building a high-capacity drive. Samsung’s 2026 roadmap coverage notes challenges including wafer warpage and aligning layers; manufacturing progress will determine whether the roadmap can translate into drives with petabyte capacity. TechRadar Pro’s 2026 roadmap report projects about 420 layers by 2029 and more than 560 during 2030, with 900–1,000 layers described as a later exploration rather than a firm date.

What Samsung’s “petabyte storage” announcements actually describe

Samsung has discussed petabyte-scale storage in a server context before. In 2022, the company said its “Petabyte Storage” solution would let a single server unit hold more than one petabyte. That is aggregate storage in a server configuration—not one SSD. Samsung’s 2022 announcement also presented memory-semantic SSD technology for AI and machine-learning applications.

Samsung Semiconductor’s PBSSD description makes the distinction concrete: its 1RU design can use up to 16 E3.S SSDs, each with a capacity of up to 15.36TB, for up to 244TB in the chassis. The company says an upcoming 2RU system design will support 1PB. Both figures refer to systems that combine multiple drives, not a single 1PB SSD. Samsung Semiconductor’s PBSSD page describes the architecture for enterprise object-storage workloads.

What is being counted Capacity described What it means
Samsung PBSSD 1RU server design Up to 244TB, using up to 16 E3.S SSDs of up to 15.36TB each A multi-drive server configuration. Samsung Semiconductor does not display a publication date on the retrieved page.
Samsung PBSSD 2RU system design 1PB supported by an upcoming system design A server-system capacity statement, not a single-drive specification. Samsung Semiconductor does not display a publication date on the retrieved page.

What Samsung’s roadmap says—and what it does not

The reported roadmap is a sequence of NAND-development milestones, not a schedule for a petabyte drive. TechRadar Pro says Samsung presented expectations for roughly 420 layers by 2029 and more than 560 during 2030 at the IEEE/JSAP VLSI Symposium. The report describes Cell Multi-Bonding as joining separate NAND structures in a package, and discusses later exploration of 900–1,000 layers. None of those milestones establishes when a 1PB SSD will be manufactured or sold. TechRadar Pro, 2026.

A higher layer count may help pack more NAND storage into a device, but it does not by itself specify a finished SSD’s capacity. A complete drive also depends on how the NAND is designed and packaged and on the other requirements of an enterprise storage product. The gap between a layer target and a shipping drive is why “could be possible around 2030” is more accurate than “Samsung will release a 1PB SSD in 2030.”

What Samsung sells today is an enterprise comparison, not a consumer upgrade

Samsung announced mass production of the PM1763 in July 2026, describing it as a PCIe 6.0 enterprise SSD using ninth-generation V-NAND. The announced capacities are 4TB, 8TB and 16TB. That shows the scale of a named current drive in the cited product announcement; it does not establish a 1PB model or consumer availability. Samsung Electronics’ PM1763 announcement.

Samsung’s PBSSD architecture is aimed at enterprise object storage, with software-defined storage options and a customer-installed, on-site subscription model described by the company. It is a data-center system, not a drop-in upgrade for a desktop or laptop. Samsung Semiconductor names MinIO, Weka and vSAN among its software-defined storage providers, lists Ceph as an open-source option, and mentions Opsara for managed services.

What to check when comparing petabyte-storage claims

  • Unit: Is the capacity for one SSD, a server chassis or a larger storage system? Samsung’s 2022 and PBSSD claims refer to server configurations.
  • Capacity and configuration: For a system, check how many drives it combines and the capacity of each one. Samsung’s PBSSD 1RU figure is up to 16 drives at up to 15.36TB each, for up to 244TB.
  • Purpose: Enterprise object storage and a consumer SSD serve different workloads and deployment needs. A data-center roadmap does not mean a product is suitable or available for a personal computer.
  • Whole-system demands: For a server, account for the chassis, power and cooling, software, reliability requirements and total system cost—not just the headline capacity.
