1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen you stop using a phone number, a carrier may eventually assign it to someone else. A 2023 report described how that new number holder could register the number with WhatsApp and be mistaken for the previous account holder. The practical fixes are to update your WhatsApp number before you lose access, delete an account you no longer use, and enable the account protections currently available in your app. This is an account-registration and identity risk—not evidence that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption was broken.
What can happen when a WhatsApp number is reassigned?
Phone numbers are not permanent identities: after a number is disconnected, a carrier can later give it to another customer. In a 2023 Gizmodo report, new holders of reassigned numbers were able to register them with WhatsApp, creating the risk that they could appear to be the previous user. The report said the new holder could receive messages sent after taking over the number and have access to group chats, but not the former user’s earlier message history.
That distinction matters. The reported problem concerns who can register an account associated with a phone number and how other people may identify that account. It is not a report that someone decrypted old WhatsApp conversations. The article described a reproducible test involving two prepaid SIM cards; that anecdote does not establish how often this happens. The available reporting also does not establish the current frequency of the scenario or whether its specific behavior remains unchanged in 2026.
Gizmodo quoted security experts who discussed SIM swapping as one way an attacker might obtain a victim’s number. WhatsApp characterized the cases as arising in the “extremely rare circumstances” where operators quickly resell phone lines and said additional safeguards help protect accounts. The report does not establish prevalence or assign definitive responsibility.

What to do when you change or stop using your number
Change the number on an account you still use
If you are keeping WhatsApp but changing phone numbers, update the number associated with your account while you can still access it. WhatsApp’s recommendation was reported by Gizmodo in 2023; check the current in-app flow, since menus can change. Do not leave an active account tied to a number you have surrendered.
Delete an account you are abandoning
If you no longer intend to use WhatsApp, delete the account rather than leaving it attached to a number that may later be reassigned. This was also WhatsApp guidance reported in 2023. Number changes and account deletion address the lifecycle problem directly; login protections and backup encryption serve different purposes.

Which WhatsApp protections help—and what they protect
| Protection | What it helps protect | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Two-step verification | Adds an extra account-entry check, making takeover harder even if someone obtains a one-time passcode. | It does not keep a carrier from reassigning a phone number or update an account tied to an old number. |
| Passkey | Lets you log back in using a fingerprint, face recognition, or device screen-lock code, according to Meta. | Availability can vary, and a passkey does not prevent number reassignment. |
| Change or delete the account number | Addresses an account still associated with a number you are changing or abandoning. | Complete the change while you can still access the account; deletion is for an account you no longer plan to use. |
| End-to-end encrypted backup | Protects the contents of a stored chat backup in a cloud account. | It does not prevent someone from registering a reassigned number. |
Turn on two-step verification
Enable two-step verification in WhatsApp and follow the prompts shown in your current version. Meta announced in August 2026 that WhatsApp is upgrading the former six-digit PIN to a longer alphanumeric password that can include special characters. The announcement did not provide a complete rollout timeline, so users may see different prompts or interfaces. Do not rely on older instructions that assume every account still uses the same six-digit setup.
Add a passkey if the option is available
Meta’s August 2026 announcement gives the path as Settings > Account > Passkeys. Follow the in-app prompts to set one up if the option appears on your device. Meta says users with both Android and iOS devices can add more than one passkey. It also reported that more than 1 billion people had set up WhatsApp passkeys; that is Meta’s company-reported figure, not independent adoption research.

Protect backups separately
WhatsApp offers optional end-to-end encryption for chat backups. According to its backup announcement, a backup can be protected with a password or a 64-digit key, and neither WhatsApp nor the backup provider can read the backup or access its key. This is protection for stored backup contents, not a solution to a recycled phone number. Keep the password or key somewhere you can retrieve it; losing it can prevent you from restoring that backup.
Use the official app and review other security settings
WhatsApp’s security overview recommends using only the official app and describes alerts for suspicious or unauthorized account-takeover attempts. Its Help Center security tips also list email, encrypted backups, and Strict account settings. Some settings may be managed through Accounts Center or Meta Account as a gradual rollout proceeds, so use the current prompts in your app rather than assuming every account has the same menus.

What these steps do not establish
The 2023 report is evidence of a reported account-registration and identity risk, not a current technical audit or a measure of how commonly it occurs. Meta’s 2026 announcement describes current protection features but does not say they prevent number recycling. Treat the safeguards as layers: update or delete an account when its number changes, then use the entry and backup protections for the separate risks they address.
