If your WhatsApp verification code is not arriving, first check that you entered the correct international phone number and that its SIM can receive ordinary SMS and calls. WhatsApp sends a registration code by SMS or, when offered, an automated call. Work through the checks below without repeatedly requesting codes or guessing them; no step guarantees delivery.
Before you start: registration code or two-step verification?
A WhatsApp registration code verifies that you control the phone number. It is separate from two-step verification, which appears after registration and may ask for a PIN. A missing SMS does not by itself mean your account is banned.
WhatsApp generally delivers the registration code by SMS or automated phone call. Email is available only to eligible people re-registering an existing account when an email address was previously added and verified. The associated SIM must still be active.
10 checks for a WhatsApp code that is not coming
1. Check the country and number format
Select the correct country code and enter the full international phone number. Omit a leading zero or an international exit code if the country’s number format requires it. Confirm that this is the number whose SIM is in your phone and can receive the code.

2. Confirm the number is supported and under your control
You need a number you own and can receive calls and SMS on. WhatsApp lists VoIP, toll-free, paid premium, and universal access numbers as unsupported. Landlines are supported only on WhatsApp Business. If you no longer control the number or SIM, ask the mobile provider whether it can restore the same number to you.
3. Let the in-app countdown finish
Wait for the timer shown on the registration screen before asking for another code. WhatsApp says the wait can vary and usually takes a few minutes, so follow the countdown rather than relying on a fixed duration. Avoid changing the number while the timer is running.

4. Request an SMS once the option is available
When WhatsApp allows another request, request the SMS and enter only the newest code if you have received more than one. Do not guess. Too many incorrect attempts can trigger a designated wait; WhatsApp states, “There’s no way to make this faster,” in reference to that wait. WhatsApp Help Center
5. Try the automated phone call if WhatsApp offers it
If the SMS timer expires and a “Call Me” option appears, use it and listen for the automated voice to announce the six-digit code. The call option may not be available in every situation.

6. Check voicemail after a missed code call
If you could not answer the automated call, check voicemail. WhatsApp’s travel guidance says the automated system should leave a voicemail containing the code in this situation.
7. Test normal texts and calls
Ask someone to send an ordinary text and call the number. If those do not arrive either, repeated WhatsApp requests are unlikely to resolve the phone-service problem; contact your carrier or troubleshoot the connection first. WhatsApp also recommends checking that the phone can receive SMS.

8. Check the SIM, signal, and internet connection
- Make sure the SIM associated with the WhatsApp number is active and has mobile reception.
- Confirm the phone can open a web page over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- If traveling, check that the number and service remain usable where you are; delivery availability can depend on your carrier and location.
Registration requires an active, supported number and an internet connection. An inactive SIM or lost access to the number cannot be replaced by an email code.
9. Review phone and WhatsApp settings
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version available for your phone.
- Restart the phone, then check whether SMS or calls work.
- Temporarily disable call-blocking settings or apps that could screen the automated call.
- Check your phone manufacturer’s Wi-Fi Calling setting if available.
Consider reinstalling WhatsApp only after checking that you have a chat backup if you need one; WhatsApp recommends backing up chats before deleting the app.

10. Contact the right support team
If ordinary SMS or calls fail, or you have lost access to the SIM or number, contact your mobile carrier. Ask about restoring service or issuing a replacement SIM with the same number. If phone service works but WhatsApp registration still fails, use WhatsApp Contact; in the app, the route is Settings > Help > Contact Us when available.

No, not for first-time registration or as a general fallback. WhatsApp says email verification may be available when logging into or re-registering an existing account if the email address was added and verified previously, either in WhatsApp settings or during setup. An active SIM associated with the account is still required. If you have lost the number or SIM, contact your provider about a replacement SIM with the same number; email cannot restore that phone-number access.
What if WhatsApp says “Login not available right now”?
WhatsApp says this message can indicate suspicious activity or a Terms of Service issue. However, a missing active SIM, mobile signal, or SMS or voice delivery can also prevent registration and is not, by itself, proof of suspicious activity or a terms violation. Retry later and use Contact Us if that option is available.
