To stop WhatsApp notifications from waking you, schedule your phone’s overnight silence mode and check its exceptions so WhatsApp cannot break through unintentionally. On Android, use Do Not Disturb or Bedtime mode; on iPhone, use Focus or Sleep Focus. If only one conversation is the problem, mute that chat or group in WhatsApp instead of silencing the whole phone.
What should you set up before bed?
Choose the control that matches what you want silenced: a phone-wide mode for recurring sleep hours, or WhatsApp’s mute control for one noisy conversation. Before relying on either, decide whether anyone must still be able to reach you overnight, then configure that exception deliberately.
- Android: use Do Not Disturb or, on devices that offer it, a scheduled Bedtime mode.
- iPhone: use a scheduled Focus or Sleep Focus.
- One chat or group: mute it in WhatsApp while leaving other apps available.
The main difference is scope. Muting one conversation targets that chat or group; it does not create a quiet period for your other apps. A scheduled phone mode is broader and can apply across apps, but its filters and exceptions decide what is still allowed to interrupt. Think about which problem you actually have before changing settings: one busy group, all WhatsApp messages, or any phone alert that makes noise while you sleep.
Also distinguish silencing notifications from stopping messages from arriving. These settings manage interruptions; they are not a way to prevent WhatsApp from receiving messages. Depending on the mode and settings, an alert may be silenced, remain visible, or be allowed through. If your goal is simply not to hear an alert, you may not need to hide every notification from the lock screen. If seeing it is also disruptive, review visual interruptions as well.

How do I stop WhatsApp notifications on Android?
Schedule Do Not Disturb or Bedtime mode for your sleep hours, then make sure WhatsApp is not on the mode’s allowed-app list. Google describes Android Modes, including Do Not Disturb, as a way to silence the device and manage when and how notifications arrive.
- Open Settings.
- Open Modes, then choose Do Not Disturb. On phones that expose it, you can instead choose Bedtime. The exact menu names and locations vary by device.
- Open the mode’s notification filters or exceptions. Remove WhatsApp from allowed apps unless you intentionally want selected WhatsApp notifications to interrupt you.
- Find the automatic schedule or bedtime routine. Set a start time and end time that cover your usual sleep window, then enable the schedule.
- Check what the mode allows through, including calls or other exceptions, before saving.
- Test the setup before depending on it: have someone send a direct WhatsApp message and a group message, then check for sound, vibration, lock-screen alerts, and other visual interruptions. If WhatsApp calls matter, test a call separately.
Android instructions can differ across manufacturers and software releases. If you do not see Modes or Bedtime, look in Settings for Do Not Disturb, schedules, or bedtime controls; do not assume a similarly named setting uses the same exceptions.

A phone-wide mode can still have exceptions, so enabling Do Not Disturb by itself is not a complete check. If WhatsApp appears among the apps that may notify you, remove it unless you want it to break through. If a call or another alert is important overnight, decide whether to preserve that specific exception rather than broadly allowing notifications you do not need.
Set the schedule to match the actual hours you want quiet, not just the moment you get into bed. Check both the start and end time, and make sure the schedule is enabled. If your sleep hours change from night to night, verify what your device supports instead of assuming the schedule will adapt automatically. The documented approach is a recurring mode with a chosen start and end time; the exact options depend on the device.
After saving, test while the mode is active. A quick daytime configuration check is not enough if the schedule has not started yet. You can check the mode’s active status when the overnight period begins, or temporarily set a test schedule, then restore the intended hours. Send one direct message and one group message from another account, and ask someone to make a WhatsApp call if calls are part of the problem. Note whether each produces sound, vibration, a lock-screen alert, or another visual interruption. This helps identify which filter needs attention rather than turning off more notifications than necessary.

Schedule a Focus for your overnight hours and leave WhatsApp out of the allowed-app list. If you choose Sleep Focus, check that its schedule in Health matches the hours when you want notifications silenced.

- Open Settings > Focus.
- Choose Sleep or Do Not Disturb. You can also create a custom Focus if you want a separate set of rules for nighttime.
- Add a schedule that covers your usual sleep hours.
- Review the Focus’s People and Apps sections. Do not allow WhatsApp unless you want it to interrupt you.
- If you use Sleep Focus, open the sleep schedule in the Health app and confirm that its times match the overnight window you want.
- Test a one-to-one message, a group message, and a WhatsApp call. Check for sounds, vibration, lock-screen display, and any other alerts that remain visible.
Apple says Sleep Focus follows the sleep schedule set in Health. Apple also notes that people who message you may see that notifications are silenced, but can still notify you if a message is urgent. Treat that as a reason to review your exception choices rather than assuming Focus makes every interruption impossible.
Focus gives you a choice between broadly silencing notifications and allowing only selected notifications. For nighttime, that means the important review is not only whether Sleep or Do Not Disturb is scheduled, but also which people and apps you have permitted. If WhatsApp is an allowed app, a schedule may not achieve the result you expect. Remove it if you want WhatsApp quiet, or keep it only if you have a specific reason to receive its alerts overnight.
Focus schedules can be based on time, location, or an app. For a predictable nightly quiet period, use a schedule that covers the sleep hours you want rather than relying on a one-time manual change. If you use Sleep Focus, make the Health sleep schedule part of the check: a mismatch between those hours and the desired quiet window can make the mode start or end at an unexpected time.
Apple’s notice that a sender may see that notifications are silenced is about notification status; it does not guarantee that every message or call will be blocked. Check your chosen exceptions and test a message, group notification, and call. If you have permitted selected people to reach you, test the behavior you intend for those contacts too. Avoid assuming that a WhatsApp call is handled exactly like a text message on every phone.

How do I mute just one WhatsApp chat or group?
Use WhatsApp’s mute control when you want other apps—and other WhatsApp conversations—to remain available. This is useful when one group or contact is noisy but you still want calls, work messages, or other alerts overnight.
- Open the conversation in WhatsApp.
- Open its chat information or notification controls.
- Choose Mute notifications, then select the longest duration available if you want the change to continue beyond tonight.
WhatsApp’s labels and duration choices can change between versions, so follow the mute control shown in your app rather than relying on a particular duration being available. Muting a conversation is not the same as silencing the whole phone: other chats and apps may still alert you.
This is the more precise choice when a single group chat keeps waking you but you do not want to suppress alerts from the rest of your phone. It avoids changing the whole device’s overnight notification rules. On the other hand, muting one conversation does not solve a problem caused by several chats, WhatsApp calls, or another app. For those broader cases, use the phone’s scheduled quiet mode and check its exceptions.

If the conversation is only a problem at night, consider whether a phone-wide schedule better fits your routine than repeatedly changing a chat setting. If it is noisy at all hours, muting the specific conversation may be a better match. Either way, check that you selected the intended conversation before applying the control, particularly when several groups have similar names. The available durations and labels can vary, so use what your current WhatsApp version shows rather than expecting a specific duration.
Which option should you choose?
Use the comparison below to choose by scope, schedule, exceptions, and visibility rather than looking for one setting that does everything.
- Mute one chat or group: best for one noisy conversation. It leaves other apps and conversations available, but it is not a recurring phone-wide sleep schedule.
- Android Do Not Disturb or Bedtime: best for a broad, recurring quiet period on an Android phone. The schedule sets when the mode applies; notification filters and exceptions determine what may still interrupt.
- iPhone Focus or Sleep Focus: best for a broad, recurring quiet period on iPhone. Focus can silence notifications or allow selected people and apps; Sleep Focus follows the schedule configured in Health.
There is also a visibility difference worth checking. A quiet alert may still appear on the lock screen or in another visual form, while other settings may limit those interruptions. The exact behavior depends on the configured filters and the phone. Decide whether you want only sounds and vibration silenced or whether you also want fewer visual alerts, then test both. If you want some urgent contacts to remain reachable, use a deliberate exception instead of allowing every app.
These are software settings, not a hardware problem. Accessories such as an alarm clock, phone stand, phone lock box, or earplugs may support a bedtime routine, but they do not directly configure or stop WhatsApp notifications. Start with the settings on the phone and in WhatsApp.
Why are WhatsApp notifications still coming through?
A scheduled mode applies its filters and exceptions; it does not necessarily block every alert. Check the settings that decide what can break through before changing all of your notification preferences.

- WhatsApp notification categories: review message, group, and call notifications; a direct message and group message may behave differently.
- Visual alerts: check whether lock-screen display or other visual interruptions remain enabled, even if sound is silenced.
- Connected devices: check whether notifications are mirrored to a smartwatch or another device that can make a sound or vibrate.
- Schedules: verify start and end times, especially after an operating-system or WhatsApp update.
Change one setting at a time and repeat the relevant test: a direct message, a group message, and—if needed—a WhatsApp call. That makes it easier to identify which exception or notification category is responsible without accidentally disabling an alert you still need.
If a direct message is quiet but a group message still alerts, do not assume the entire mode failed. The two may use different notification categories, so review those controls and retest the category that caused the interruption. If messages are quiet but a WhatsApp call rings, check call-related exceptions and test a call separately. The configuration that affects messages may not handle calls identically on every phone.

If the phone itself appears quiet but you still hear or feel an alert, check whether a smartwatch or another connected device is mirroring notifications. The phone’s overnight mode may not explain an alert produced elsewhere. Include that device in your test: determine whether the sound or vibration comes from the phone, the wearable, or both before changing more phone settings.
If the problem begins after an update, revisit the schedule and exception lists instead of assuming your previous setup still applies. Menu names, defaults, and notification behavior can change. Confirm the active hours, allowed apps, allowed people, repeated-call behavior, and WhatsApp’s message, group, and call categories. Then test again. If you are on Android and the described path does not match your screen, remember that menu paths differ by manufacturer and some documented steps apply only to Android 14 and later.
How can you keep important overnight contacts reachable?
Do not disable every alert automatically if you rely on overnight access for caregiving, a dependent, a medical concern, or emergency contacts. Instead, use the mode’s people or app exceptions to allow only the alerts you intentionally want, and test those exceptions along with the alerts you mean to silence.
On iPhone, Apple describes Focus as allowing selected notifications and says an urgent message can still notify you under the behavior it documents. Because exceptions and notification behavior depend on your configuration, verify the result on your own phone rather than assuming a contact or call will always break through.
Make the exception decision before bedtime. Identify the contact or kind of alert you need, check the relevant People, Apps, call, or notification filter controls, and avoid allowing all WhatsApp alerts if your goal is to quiet a particular conversation. Then test both sides of the setup: a WhatsApp alert you intend to silence and the contact or alert you intend to keep available. That is the only way to confirm that the quiet period is not broader—or narrower—than you meant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I know the setup is working?
Use a short, repeatable test rather than waiting to discover a problem in the middle of the night. Confirm that the schedule is active for the hours you selected, then check the kinds of alert that matter to you.

- Send a one-to-one WhatsApp message from another account while the mode is active.
- Send a group message, since it may use a different notification category.
- Place a WhatsApp call if calls are one of the interruptions you want to prevent.
- Check for sound, vibration, lock-screen display, and visual interruptions on the phone.
- Check any smartwatch or other device that may mirror alerts.
- If you set an exception for an important contact, test that exception as well.
Testing all these cases does not mean every phone will behave identically. It helps you see how your settings work on your device and identify whether a sound, visual alert, call, or connected device is the part that still needs attention. Recheck after changing settings or after a software update.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will WhatsApp messages still arrive while my phone is on Do Not Disturb or Focus?
These modes manage notifications; they do not stop WhatsApp from receiving messages. Depending on the filters and exceptions you set, a notification may be silenced, remain visible, or be allowed through.
Should I use WhatsApp mute or my phone’s sleep mode?
Use WhatsApp mute when one conversation is the problem and you want other phone alerts to remain available. Use a scheduled phone mode when you want a recurring, broader quiet period across apps.
Why did this setting stop working after an update?
Updates can change menu names, defaults, or schedules. Recheck the mode’s schedule and exception lists, then test a direct message, group message, and call to confirm the behavior you want.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I silence one WhatsApp group without turning off all notifications?
Yes. Open the group conversation, open its chat information or notification controls, and choose Mute notifications. Select the longest duration available if you want it to continue beyond tonight. Other chats and apps may still alert you.
How do I stop WhatsApp calls from waking me up?
Use your phone’s scheduled overnight mode, then review its app, people, and call exceptions. Test a WhatsApp call separately from messages because call and message behavior may differ by phone and configuration.
How do I schedule WhatsApp notifications to turn off at night?
Schedule Android Do Not Disturb or Bedtime mode, or schedule an iPhone Focus. Remove WhatsApp from allowed apps unless you want it to interrupt you. On iPhone Sleep Focus, make sure the Health sleep schedule matches your intended hours.
Why can a notification still appear if the phone is quiet?
Silencing sound does not necessarily hide every visual alert. Check lock-screen and other visual interruption settings, and test what appears while the mode is active.
How can I keep an emergency contact reachable overnight?
Use the mode’s people or app exceptions to allow only the alerts you deliberately need. Test the allowed contact and the WhatsApp alerts you want silenced rather than assuming an exception will behave as intended.
The Bottom Line
For a recurring quiet night, schedule Android Do Not Disturb or Bedtime mode, or iPhone Focus or Sleep Focus, and check the allowed apps, people, and call exceptions. For one noisy chat, mute that conversation in WhatsApp. Test a direct message, group message, and call—plus any connected device and important exception—before relying on the setup overnight.
