No confirmed WhatsApp “Local Network Share” feature is available. A secondary report described WhatsApp working on wireless file sharing, potentially across platforms and without internet, but no official WhatsApp launch notice or specification confirms that feature. WhatsApp’s documented iPhone-to-Android chat migration is a separate process, not a general local file-sharing tool.
What “WhatsApp Local Network Share” means—and what is confirmed
The name refers to a reported concept for sharing files directly over a local wireless network, rather than sending them through an internet-connected WhatsApp chat. The reported idea may support high-quality, cross-platform transfers and work without internet access. Those details describe reported development, not a released capability.
As of October 7, 2026, no official WhatsApp release notice or technical specification confirms that Local Network Share has launched. Meta’s March 2026 newsroom announcement instead confirms that WhatsApp chat-history transfer from iOS to Android is rolling out broadly; it does not announce general local file sharing.
| Workflow | What is established | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Reported Local Network Share | Described in secondary reporting as a feature in development; no official launch confirmation or specification is established. | A proposed way to share files wirelessly, potentially without internet. |
| WhatsApp iPhone-to-Android chat transfer | Google’s documented workflow, dated October 26, 2021, uses a USB-C-to-Lightning cable and a QR code. | Moving WhatsApp conversations, media, and other data to a new Android phone. |
| WhatsApp companion devices | Meta Engineering’s July 14, 2021 explanation says a phone can be used with up to four other non-phone devices at once, each connecting independently with end-to-end encryption. | Using WhatsApp across linked devices; it is not a documented local file-transfer feature. |
Can you share WhatsApp files without internet?
There is no confirmed WhatsApp Local Network Share feature to rely on for offline file transfers. The reported concept’s potential to work without internet should not be mistaken for an available WhatsApp setting or workflow.

WhatsApp’s existing sharing behavior is different: when someone shares a chat, photo, video, file, or voice message, recipients receive a copy and can forward or share it, according to the WhatsApp Help Center. That describes sharing content with recipients, not a direct phone-to-phone transfer over a local network.
How to transfer WhatsApp chats from iPhone to Android
If the goal is to move WhatsApp history to a new Android phone, use the documented migration workflow rather than looking for Local Network Share. Google’s instructions describe a cable-and-QR process for copying conversations, media, and other data. Google Android product manager Paul Dunlop said in 2021: “Your WhatsApp chat history will simply be copied from your iPhone to your new Android phone, and we’ll automatically make sure you don’t receive new messages on the old device while the transfer is in progress.”

Google’s documented workflow dates to October 26, 2021. Meta’s March 2026 newsroom says iOS-to-Android chat transfer is rolling out broadly, but that announcement does not make the cable-and-QR migration the same thing as a general Wi-Fi file-transfer feature.
Why might WhatsApp ask for local network access?
A local-network permission prompt would concern an app trying to discover or communicate with devices on the same network. It would not, by itself, confirm that WhatsApp Local Network Share has launched.

On iPhone and iPad
Apple says that in iOS 14 or later and iPadOS 14 or later, an app that wants to interact with devices on the local network must ask permission the first time it tries to browse that network. A prompt grants or denies that network access; it does not establish which feature prompted the request.
On Android
Android 16 documentation describes local-network protections intended to put LAN access behind runtime permission. Android says this access can help apps fingerprint devices and proxy location. The documentation describes the platform’s protections, not a WhatsApp-specific release.

Does encryption prevent recipients from keeping or forwarding files?
No. Meta Engineering’s July 14, 2021 explanation of linked devices says: “Each companion device will connect to your WhatsApp independently while maintaining the same level of privacy and security through end-to-end encryption.” Meta Engineering described WhatsApp’s default end-to-end encryption in 2026 as protecting communications for over 3 billion people. Those statements concern encryption in transit between participants and devices; they do not mean that a recipient cannot retain or forward content they receive. The WhatsApp Help Center explicitly notes that recipients have a copy of shared chats and media and can forward or share it.

Because no official WhatsApp specification confirms this feature, details such as these remain unestablished: whether it works between Android and iPhone, whether internet access is needed, which OS permissions it requests, what quality or file-size limits apply, whether both people must confirm a transfer, and which app versions or regions would support it. A credible availability claim should be supported by an official WhatsApp announcement or documentation that answers those questions.
