When WhatsApp for PC will not open, remains stuck on the logo, closes immediately, or refuses to update, the cause is usually one of four things: damaged app data, a failed Microsoft Store registration, a Windows component problem, or a network/sign-in issue. Work through the fixes below in order. Start with Repair because it normally preserves the app’s local data; use Reset only if Repair fails.

Before troubleshooting: check which WhatsApp version you use
WhatsApp for Windows is commonly installed through the Microsoft Store, although the official WhatsApp download page also provides a desktop download. If the desktop app is unavailable or your Windows installation is not supported, use WhatsApp Web in a browser as a temporary alternative.
Also note that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 can continue to run, but Microsoft no longer supplies normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it. The repair steps below still apply to Windows 10, but upgrading to Windows 11 is the safer long-term option when the hardware supports it.
Quick checks that solve simple WhatsApp failures
- Check the connection. Open
Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fiand confirm that Wi-Fi or Ethernet is connected. Try opening another website. - Close WhatsApp completely. Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. Select WhatsApp, if present, and choose End task. Start the app again. - Restart Windows. This clears a stuck background process and completes pending app updates.
- Check your phone. Make sure WhatsApp works on the phone, the phone has an internet connection, and the account has not been logged out or removed from linked devices.
- Check Windows time. An incorrect clock can interfere with updates and secure connections. In Windows 10, open
Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable Set time automatically, and select Sync now under Synchronize your clock. Windows 11 has the equivalent Date & time settings underSettings > Time & language.
1. Repair WhatsApp without reinstalling it
Windows provides a Repair option for many Store apps. Repair attempts to fix the installation without restoring the app to its original state.

Windows 11
- Open
Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. - Find WhatsApp.
- Select the three-dot More button next to it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch WhatsApp again.
Windows 10
- Open
Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features. - Select WhatsApp.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, then test the app.
If the Advanced options page does not contain Repair, that particular installation type may not expose the option. Continue with the update or reinstall steps instead.
2. Reset WhatsApp if Repair did not help
Use Reset on the same Advanced options page when WhatsApp still will not start or is stuck on the loading screen. Reset returns the app to its original configuration and can remove its local app data. It may therefore require you to link the computer to your phone again.
On Windows 11, use Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > WhatsApp > More (...) > Advanced options > Reset. On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > WhatsApp > Advanced options > Reset.
Your WhatsApp account and phone chat history are not the same thing as the Windows app’s local configuration. Nevertheless, before resetting, make sure you can access the phone number and phone account needed to link the desktop app again.

A broken or incomplete Store update can leave WhatsApp installed but unable to launch. Open the Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates or Check for updates, depending on the Store interface. Install any WhatsApp and Store updates shown, then restart the computer.
Do not uninstall Microsoft Store as a troubleshooting step. Microsoft does not support removing the Store app. If Store apps generally fail to install, update, or launch, repair the Windows installation and Store-related components rather than deleting the Store package.
4. Re-register WhatsApp for the affected Windows account
If WhatsApp appears installed but clicking its icon does nothing, its AppX registration may be damaged. Re-registering the package can repair activation problems.

This command must be run in the affected user’s normal, non-administrator PowerShell window. Do not choose “Run as administrator” for this step:

- Open PowerShell normally, without elevation.
- Paste the command and press
Enter. - Close PowerShell and try WhatsApp again.
An elevated PowerShell window can register the package for the Administrator account instead of the user who cannot launch WhatsApp. That is why the distinction matters.
If the normal-user command returns no package, an administrator can check whether WhatsApp exists for another account with:
Get-AppxPackage *WhatsApp* -AllUsersThis is a diagnostic command. Avoid using Remove-AppxPackage commands unless you have identified the exact package and intend to remove it. Microsoft warns that AppX removal can be irreversible, particularly when removing a package for all users.
5. Uninstall and install WhatsApp again
Reinstalling is useful when Repair, Reset, and re-registration do not resolve a corrupted package. It is not a universal fix: registration, permissions, policy, and Windows servicing problems can survive a reinstall.

Uninstall on Windows 11
- Open
Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. - Find WhatsApp and select its three-dot More button.
- Choose Uninstall, then confirm.
- Restart Windows.
Install it again
Use the official WhatsApp download page. It currently provides a desktop option labelled Mac/PC and a WhatsApp Web browser option. Download the desktop version from that page or install WhatsApp through Microsoft Store, then open it and scan the QR code from WhatsApp on your phone > Settings > Linked devices > Link a device.

winget install <package-id-returned-by-search>Do not copy a hard-coded WhatsApp WinGet ID from an old guide. Package identifiers can change; use the result currently returned by winget search.
6. Run Windows Update troubleshooting
WhatsApp can fail because the Windows Store framework or other operating-system components are outdated or damaged.

Windows 11
- Open
Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. - Find Windows Update.
- Select Run.
Windows 10
- Open
Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. - Choose Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
If updates remain stuck, clear the Windows Update download cache:
- Press
Win + R, typeservices.msc, and pressEnter. - Right-click Windows Update and select Stop.
- Open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin File Explorer. - Delete the files and folders inside that folder. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart Windows and try updating WhatsApp again.
7. Repair Windows system files
Use these commands when Windows Update, Microsoft Store, or several Store apps are malfunctioning—not merely because WhatsApp is slow to open.
- Search Start for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the following command and wait for it to finish:
chkdsk /f C:Windows may tell you that the drive is in use and ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y and restart if prompted.
After Windows starts again, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for a successful completion message such as “The restore operation completed successfully” or “The operation completed successfully.” Then run:

sfc /scannowLet System File Checker reach 100 percent before closing the window. Restart Windows and test WhatsApp.
8. Check whether security policy is blocking the app
This is most relevant on work, school, or managed computers. Microsoft identifies AppLocker and Group Policy as possible causes of modern apps failing to activate. Event messages can include AppX error 0x80073D01, underlying error 0x800704EC, or TWinUI activation error 5961, along with text saying the program was blocked by AppLocker or Group Policy.
To investigate, open Event Viewer and check:
- Windows Logs > Application
- Windows Logs > System
- Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > AppXDeployment-Server > Operational
- Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Apps > Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational
- Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > AppModel-Runtime > Admin
If the computer belongs to an employer or school, contact its administrator. Simply stopping the AppLocker service may not remove rules that are already being enforced. Do not change ownership or permissions on C:Program FilesWindowsApps, the Windows registry, or other protected system locations as a general fix. Microsoft warns that incorrect permission changes can damage Windows and may require rebuilding the system.
9. Consider a Windows Insider build problem
Some users have reported WhatsApp Desktop stuck on its logo or failing after particular Windows Insider builds, including reports involving builds 26220.8340 and 26220.8138. These are community reports, not an official Microsoft confirmation that a specific build universally breaks WhatsApp.
If the problem began immediately after installing an Insider update and affects only WhatsApp, check the Windows Insider feedback and WhatsApp support channels before repeatedly reinstalling the app. If other Store apps also fail, prioritize Windows repair and update troubleshooting. If this is a production computer, avoid preview builds unless you specifically need them.

When WhatsApp Web is the right answer
If the desktop package is incompatible with the current Windows build, the Store is broken, or your organization blocks Store apps, the browser version avoids the Windows app package entirely. Go to the official WhatsApp download page, choose WhatsApp Web, and link it from the phone’s Linked devices menu. This does not repair the desktop installation, but it confirms whether the account and WhatsApp service work normally.

Will resetting WhatsApp delete my phone chats?
Reset restores the Windows app to its original configuration and can remove local app data. It does not function as a phone-chat deletion command, but you may need to link the computer again. Make sure you can access your phone and account before resetting.
Why is WhatsApp missing from Windows 11 Installed apps?
The package may not be installed for the current user, or the installation may have failed. Check Microsoft Store and the official WhatsApp download page. You can also run Get-AppxPackage *WhatsApp* in normal PowerShell to see whether the package is registered for your account.
