A TV that appears not to turn on may have a power-supply problem, a remote that is not communicating, a temporary startup lockup, or a picture problem while the set is actually running. Check the standby light and sound first, then test the power connection, outlet, TV button, and connected devices. These checks can narrow down the cause, but they cannot identify a failed internal component.

First, work out whether the TV has power

Before unplugging anything, press Power once and watch and listen. Note whether the standby light is on, off, or blinking; whether it changes after the button press; and whether you hear sound, a click, or a startup tone or see a logo or brief screen flash. The pattern can help support staff, but indicator meanings differ by model: for example, LG describes its standby light as on while the TV is in standby, while Samsung says its light goes off when the set is powered on. Do not interpret a light pattern using another model’s instructions.

If you hear sound, see a flash, or notice the indicator respond, the TV may be starting up even if the screen remains black. That points to a possible picture, input, or connected-device issue rather than proving a total power failure. Check the selected input and the attached device, then use the manufacturer’s picture troubleshooting for your exact model. These clues alone do not establish that the panel or backlight has failed. TCL’s TV troubleshooting guidance discusses signs that a set may be on despite a blank screen.

Check the power path from outlet to TV

Secure the TV’s power connection

Confirm that the plug is firmly seated in the wall outlet and, if your model has a removable power cord, at the TV as well. Do not force a connector. If the cord or plug is visibly damaged, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.

Verify the outlet and bypass accessories

Test the outlet with a small appliance you know works, or try the TV in a known-working outlet. Check any relevant wall switch or breaker. For this test, connect the TV directly to the wall rather than through a power strip, surge protector, extension cord, or smart plug. This isolates the outlet and accessories; it is not a reason to buy a new power accessory.

These external checks are recommended in manufacturer troubleshooting guidance, including LG’s power troubleshooting, TCL’s TV guide, and Sony’s no-power guidance.

Compare the remote with the TV’s power button

Try turning the TV on with its physical power button. Its location varies by model, so check the TV manual if you cannot find it.

  • The TV button works, but the remote does not: Check the remote batteries and make sure the remote is operating as expected. Use the battery type specified on the remote or in its manual; do not assume a size. Some remotes may require model-specific pairing or steps.
  • Neither turns on the TV: Continue with the power and device checks. A remote fault is less likely to explain the symptom if the TV’s own button also fails, but this observation does not identify the cause.

LG’s troubleshooting steps likewise recommend trying the TV’s button and checking remote batteries if that button works.

Disconnect external devices and try a model-appropriate reset

An HDMI, USB, streaming, game, or audio device can complicate startup troubleshooting. Disconnect external devices from the TV, then try the TV’s power button again. If you choose to unplug the set to clear a possible temporary lockup, follow the instructions for your exact model rather than treating one wait time as universal.

These are different, model- or source-specific instructions, not interchangeable universal reset durations. If the TV starts, reconnect devices one at a time to see whether the symptom returns. If it does not, avoid repeating generic resets; use the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance.

Use the symptoms to decide what to do next

What you observe What it may indicate Next check
TV button works; remote does not Remote batteries, operation, or model-specific pairing may be involved. Check batteries and the remote instructions.
No response from TV button or remote Power delivery, a temporary startup issue, or a TV fault remain possible. Verify the outlet and connection, bypass accessories, then follow the model’s reset guidance.
Sound, a changing indicator, or brief screen activity The TV may be on, with a picture, input, or connected-device issue. Check the input and follow the manufacturer’s picture troubleshooting.
Indicator blinks continuously or behavior seems unusual The meaning depends on the exact model; the pattern may help support diagnose the issue. Record the pattern and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.

These observations help separate likely remote and external-power checks from a possible picture or internal problem; they are not a component-level diagnosis. Manufacturer guides list possible causes and troubleshooting actions but do not establish how frequently each cause occurs, so there is no reliable percentage to apply to an individual TV.

When to contact support or arrange service

Contact the TV maker or a qualified repair service if the TV still will not start after you have verified the outlet, secured the power connection, tried the physical button, disconnected external devices, and followed the applicable model instructions. Also seek support for a continuously blinking indicator or unusual electrical behavior instead of continuing generic resets.

When you call, provide the model and serial number, what the standby light does, whether you hear sound or see a flash, whether the TV’s button works, and which checks you have already tried. Sony, Samsung Gulf, TCL, and Philips provide manufacturer troubleshooting guidance; instructions may differ by region and model.
